Fascinating. I get the exact same image name, but the code I get is

Based on the type of letter frequencies we're seeing here, e.g. three "a"s in a row, I expect we're looking at a Vigenere cipher here.

I'm curious what's up with the radically different ciphertexts, though. Two possibilities:

(1) The PMs screwed up something in the first message and reposted it later.
(2) There are multiple texts being transmitted, perhaps with some kind of time delay.

In the event it's (2), I'll set up a cron job to pull down the image once an hour and see whether it changes during the night.

Well, Mara and I did a little latin digging...soooo...Latin lesson time again boys and girls!

using our handly cereal box decoder:

nuntiusutordo becomes nuntius ut ordo orrrrr....

Nuntius-messages, messengers

ut- so that, when, as, to, that

Ordo-rank, class, order, row, line, series

I remember Mara said something really good right about now, but I for the life of me can't remember what it was. What'd I miss?

Neither did I. If you either save the picture or screenprint and open it in photoshop, then increase the brightness the code will become visible.

Differences in the text of the two images

The first 6 letters in each text, the last 8 letters in each, and in the 3rd row, the first group of text has 9 letters different, but the second one has 8 letters (in a group) and then an odd one different further down the row. Compare aspilncone (set 1) to aspilnacone (set 2).

The first set has 8 rows of 42 letters each, while the second has 9 rows; the first 8 with 40 letters each the last row with 16.

Code:

could this possibly be a gronsfeld cipher with the filename (879346672) being the key?

i'll check it out.

If I understand it correctly, Gronsfeld with key 879346672 is equivalent to Vigenere with key hgicdffgb. I come up empty on both texts, and on the shorter text-differences, alas.

I ran this past a cryppie friend who doesn't have the time to commit to doing the break, but he pointed out that there are polyalphabetic ciphers other than Vigenere; he suggested the Playfair cipher and the Doppelkast, which is German.

Just for a lark I worked out all the letter pair frequencies in the second of the two original texts; here's what I came up with.

(EDIT: crap, error in my code, will fix this right quick)

Edit again: d'oh, right, it *can't* be a Playfair cipher, as a Playfair will never have dual-letter digraphs. Four-square and two-square ciphers can, though.
