Please sign my name on the list as 'Wanabesafa'. (I want to change it from El Joto but don't know how.)

Yes. Because, I'm sure, when you make a big decision, insults are just what you need too, to bring you around.

It's easy to hate. It's even fun. Which is why I'm so cautious of it. It feels like a better solution than it ever really turns out to be. So, what is the motivation here? Is it to make ourselves feel a bit more powerful, even if briefly? Or is it to do the best we can to reestablish communications?

Macavity wrote:
Jay - That's really the whole point. The goal is to get him out of the way without resorting to violence, and we can do that one of two ways:

1) Harass him until he says "Okay, this is too much for me. Someone else try to deal with these Earthlings - I've had it!"

2) Get the people of PXC to express such displeasure (hopefully nothing to the level of rioting in the streets tho) that he's forced to give in to public opinion.

Now this gave me pause.

Though I'm not fully agreeing with Macavity, sie does make a point which makes me a bit less sure that the totally cool, rational-headed approach would be best either. If Earlywine doesn't decide to totally ignore Earth communications, he'll at least be spending time sorting through them to pick out bits he wants to publicise. It may help distract him from what the Scoobies are doing.

Then, the balance would be to provide enough material that he'll think it's worthwhile to juice Earth communications, but not so much that he'll be able to do it too quickly.

Damn. Should have asked before the link came down, whether they think such a distraction would help them or not. Doing so now, with Earlywine wiretapping, would surely be a bad idea...

Also: yes, very well put ixalon.

Put me on for it! That is pretty good letter. Nice Job! But isn't it already locked down?

I'm not at all sure going in with all guns blazing and slinging insults about will get us anywhere. People have been saying that Earlywine restricting and monitoring the link is a reflex action. How will Earth immediately responding by sending off a letter apparently written in the heat of the moment help? I think a letter is warranted, but it needs to be a carefully considered response and not something that plays to the stereotype established by Earlywine by being fractious and reactionary.

I'm in too.

However, we don't know if this will be effective if, as some people are suggesting, that Earlywine is in 3P.

Here's just a suggested second draft of the letter. It's just some minor differences, because the first version was so good:

Quote:
Dear Editor:

This is an open letter to Council Leader Earlywine from the people of Earth:

Mr. Earlywine, we are shocked and dismayed by your recent actions.. Here on Earth, we have worked hard to ensure a free flow of information between Earth and Perplex City so as to keep the citizens of Perplex City informed on our status in the search for the Receda Cube.

We have shared the information we gathered while attempting to locate the Receda Cube, and the views we have developed on the many facets of Perplex City life because we wanted you to learn about us.

We wanted to demonstrate how we can work together for a greater good, despite the differences that we on Earth have: differences of religion, opinion, and social background to name just a few.

We freely admit that we aren't perfect: we love, we hate, we argue, we fight, and sometimes we let our differences divide us instead of looking past them to the common threads that are shared by all that should bind us together. But not once did we shy away from your requests - indeed, we did our best to fulfill them.

But our fellow hunters and us believe that our greatest moment thus far occurred when the main Earth-to-Perplex City data link was disrupted by agents of an organization known as The Third Power, who told us to "say goodbye to Perplex City!" (Quoted directly from the messages they sent once they had successfully cut the link)

It was feared that the carrier wave would dissipate, forever crushing the hope that the Receda Cube would be found and returned - but we on Earth formed a single, massive group dedicated to making sure that the secondary San Francisco link was activated so that information could once again flow between Earth and Perplex City. It was a difficult task, and even with our best minds taking on this mighty challenge, we barely managed to activate the San Francisco terminal before the carrier wave faded. In fact, reliable sources at both Mind Candy and the Perplex City Academy informed us that the carrier wave was mere minutes away from fading completely when they picked up the signal from San Francisco.

And now, after all the work we have put into ensuring that communications between Earth and Perplex City remain open, your first act is to have it locked down. This drastic action - to practically shut down the data link after all the effort we put into making sure it stayed operational - is mind-boggling to us.

What's next, Mr. Earlywine? Considering your current xenophobic attitudes, we on Earth fear that Perplex City now faces an Orwellian future, with a "Ministry of Truth" dedicated to spreading xenophobic propaganda and lies, a "Ministry of Peace" dedicated to developing better and more efficient tools of war (and ensuring that they get used), a "Ministry of Plenty" dedicated to making sure that the population is kept on the brink of starvation, and a "Ministry of Love" dedicated to the arrest, detainment, and turture of anyone who dares to question the government?

This may sound alarming to some people, and perhaps it is. But we, the undersigned, speak for all the people of Earth who have sacrificed their time and effort to assist in the mantaining of the Perplex City-Earth link. Your actions and attitude are not conducive to a successful outcome. They serve only to hinder it.

You have taken advantage of panic and outrage to further your own power-hungry ends, and we on Earth consider this a deplorable act on your part. We have worked with the people of Perplex City in good faith, and for our efforts we have gotten closer to recovering the Receda Cube that those in Perplex City long for.

But we now see a political coup staged in a time of fear, uncertainty, and doubt generated not out of any reasonable cause - but an experiment whose potential benefits were ignored and its flaws magnified and twisted out of proportion. We see the beginnings of an Orwellian state in what was once a free society.

We of Earth call on you to step down immediately, Mr. Earlywine, and we call on the citizens of Perplex City to stand with us in rejecting your policies and your ham-fisted meddling.

Sincerely yours,

(names go here)

Representing the People of Earth

I agree that we may have better effect with a "nice" letter, but I'll put my name to anything, just in show of support with whatever we end up deciding to go with.

Add me on too please, to whatever version gets sent. I don't have the political wherewithall today to figure out what the best approahc is, or even if what we write makes a difference if we are going to be censored!
