you know, mac, I keep reading your letter and thinking "I couldn't have said it better at all." I realize not everyone shares my viewpoint. But I, fFor one, really like it as is.

Ok, I suppose you could strike some of the name calling. Like the dictator-fFor-life bit, fFor example. The conniving weasel did manage to pull off a pretty legitimate election win. He happened to get a bit lucky with the timing, opportunistic bastard that he is.

Please add me to the signed list - falqwin (Singapore/Unforums) - and I like the letter just the way it is. IMHO, it should stand out if it is to get attention.

Let's see if we can't stir up a hornet's nest . . .

OK, money where my mouth is, the bits of your (really good Wink ) letter that a slight tweak would convince me to put my name to it are:

Ditch the dictator for life, if we want to court the people of Perplex City then I think we need to be a bit more tactful, I think the same could be said for the xenophobia and irrationality comments. I think we can look angry and put-out, but personal smear campaigns (based on information from the Sentinel, which may well have tinkered with his image) make us look bad.

I'm not sure how much the people of Perplex City know of what we've actually accomplished, and that maybe we should tell them alongside this letter? Violet, Scarlett and Kurt know most of what's gone on. None of them know anything about CT (though it seems MC and Sente have suspicions from the leaked e-mails when they comment on the card-tampering). Revealing his presence on earth would justify the cointinuation of those experimnets (but do we want to sell him out so soon?)

The final thing is, I don't think we should ask for him to step down. He was elected (during a huge turn-out), so we could be seen to be trying to influence their political process, when what we really want is for the link to be restored.

Do these comments sound reasonable?

Sounds reasonable to me. My only other niggle is about this bit:
Quote:
But we, the undersigned, speak for all the people of Earth who have sacrificed their time and effort to assist in the mantaining of the Perplex City-Earth link.
I just don't like it saying "all the", and would be happier if those two little words were omitted. But that's probably just me being pedantic.

Tack me on man, Drinkmonsters from Nashville, Tennessee USA.

The diplomatic letter approach will be a fun way to try and get this story turned around. The way I see it going, is a rogue link will be set up by the new Receda's Revenge, and we'll have access to our favorite city again, but if this gets enough of a following, our collective narrative could take quite a turn eh?

Aaand ... my money-mouth connection is live!

Sorry I missed the request for the TEH OMGZEEVIL! moments upthread -- here are the passages that give me pause, with my reasons for pausing.

Also: it might help the drafting effort to collaborate on a list of the achievements of Earth cubehunters that -- erm -- that could be referenced in print without getting anyone arrested? I can think of several, but most are either too bizarre or too illegal (buying up train seats, jamming the emergency services phone lines) to go over well. But what are some things we've actually done that we can line out on paper and confront them with?

Macavity wrote:

"We have shared the information we gathered while attempting to locate the Receda Cube, and the views we have developed on the many facets of Perplex City life because we wanted you to learn about us."

But not once did we shy away from your requests - indeed, we did our best to fulfill them."

[I suggest editing out the above passage due to aforementioned length concerns; furthermore, the tone of all this will probably make more impact if we focus not on our own disappointment (the "After all our hard work!" parts) but on the immeasurable setback this represents to the search for the Cube -- and thus the quality of life of Perplexians.]

"... drastic action - to practically shut down the data link after all the effort we put into making sure it stayed operational - is mind-boggling to us"

[For "is mind-boggling to us", I'd substitute something more formal that points to the ill consequences for evvverybody -- perhaps "represents not only a grave setback to years of cube recovery efforts but a sure impediment to any such work to come"?]

"What's next, Mr. Earlywine? Considering your current xenophobic attitudes, we on Earth fear that Perplex City now faces an Orwellian future, with a "Ministry of Truth" dedicated to spreading xenophobic propaganda and lies, a "Ministry of Peace" dedicated to developing better and more efficient tools of war (and ensuring that they get used), a "Ministry of Plenty" dedicated to making sure that the population is kept on the brink of starvation, and a "Ministry of Love" dedicated to the arrest, detainment, and turture of anyone who dares to question the government?"
"Your actions and attitude are not conducive to a successful outcome. They serve only to hinder it."
"You have taken advantage of panic and outrage to further your own power-hungry ends, and we on Earth consider this a deplorable act on your part."
"... but now we see a political coup staged ..." [could be misunderstood as an accusation of ballot-box-stealing or something rather than the severance of the link] "...in a time of fear, uncertainty, and doubt generated not out of any reasonable cause - but an experiment whose potential benefits were ignored and its flaws magnified and twisted out of proportion. We see the beginnings of an Orwellian state in what was once a free society."
"We of Earth call on you to step down immediately, Mr. Earlywine, and we call on the citizens of Perplex City to stand with us in rejecting your policies and your ham-fisted meddling. Your attitudes and actions do not assist us in locating the Receda Cube; indeed, your interference only hinders our joint efforts."
"... Mr. Earlywine's vitriolic, abrasive, xenophobic and completely unwarranted attitude towards the people of Earth."

[Unless our explicit goal is to piss him off beyond recovery, we need to either (a) tone the above stuff down to something his administration can hear without wiggling in their seats or (b) address the above in a different medium, one that somehow goes directly and exclusively to citizens]

All riight, time for another update:

Added two more signatures (falquin and flicb), and have altered some of the text as follows:

Mikeyj - The dictator-for-life bit got scratched out one draft ago. As for the xenophobia, Orwell references, and stepping down, they've been modified.

Glossolalia - The "political coup" in question was the way he used the information about Special Project 487 to ensure that he'd be elected to the position of City Council Leader. If he hadn't been elected leader, he couldn't have severed the link. As for staging a political coup, that just means he acted at a time that was advantageous to him.

Also, as for saying his actions only serve to hinder the hunt for the Receda Cube, that's the truth - without the link, we don't have a source of reliable information regarding the Receda Cube, and without reliable information it'll take much longer to locate it.

Anywho, here's the latest draft (all of the edits are in green):

Quote:
Dear Editor:

This is an open letter to Council Leader Earlywine from the people of Earth.

We are shocked and dismayed by your recent actions, Mr. Earlywine. Here on Earth, we have worked hard to ensure a free flow of information between Earth and Perplex City so as to keep the citizens of Perplex City informed on our status in the search for the Receda Cube. After all, it's hard for people to believe they're ever going to recover something they've lost unless they hear from those who are searching for it.

We have shared the information we gathered while attempting to locate the Receda Cube, and the views we have developed on the many facets of Perplex City life because we wanted you to learn about us and how we work together to achieve a goal such as the successful recovery of the Receda Cube.

We freely admit that we aren't perfect: we love, we hate, we argue, we fight, and sometimes we let our differences divide us instead of looking past them to the common threads that are shared by all - threads that should bind us together. But not once did we shy away from your requests - indeed, we did our best to fulfill them.

But we and our fellow Cube hunters believe that our greatest moment thus far occurred when the main Earth-to-Perplex City data link was disrupted by agents of an organization known as The Third Power, who told us to "say goodbye to Perplex City!" (Quoted directly from the messages they sent once they had successfully cut the link.)

It was feared that the carrier wave would dissipate, forever crushing the hope that the Receda Cube would be found and returned - but we on Earth formed a single, massive group dedicated to making sure that the secondary San Francisco link was activated so that information could once again flow between Earth and Perplex City. It was a difficult task, and even with our best minds taking on this mighty challenge, we barely managed to activate the San Francisco terminal before the carrier wave faded. In fact, reliable sources at both Mind Candy and the Perplex City Academy informed us that the carrier wave was mere minutes away from fading completely when they picked up the signal from San Francisco.

And now, after all the work we have put into ensuring that communications between Earth and Perplex City remain open, your first act is to have it locked down. This drastic action - to practically shut down the data link after all the effort we put into making sure it stayed operational - represents not only a grave setback to years of Cube recovery efforts, but a sure impediment to any further efforts.

What's next, Mr. Earlywine? Considering your current attitudes, we on Earth fear that the citizens of Perplex City may be facing a greater loss than that of the Receda Cube: the loss of all of the rights and privileges they take for granted in their daily lives. After all, such things have been know to happen when people use fear and misinformation to gain political power.

This may sound alarming to some people, and perhaps it is. But we, the undersigned, speak for all those on Earth who have sacrificed their time and effort to assist in the mantaining of the Perplex City-Earth link. Your actions and attitude are not conducive to a successful outcome, Mr Earlywine. They serve only to hinder it.

You have taken advantage of panic and outrage to further your own ends, and we on Earth consider this a deplorable act on your part - indeed, we would consider it a deplorable act on the part of any public servant. We have worked with the people of Perplex City in good faith, and for our efforts we have gotten closer to recovering the Receda Cube that those in Perplex City long for.

But we now see a political coup staged in a time of fear, uncertainty, and doubt - emotions generated not out of any reasonable cause, but the discovery of an experiment whose potential benefits were ignored and whose flaws were magnified and twisted out of proportion by someone who wanted to gain political power. We see the beginnings of a repressive state in what was once a free society, and the possibility that we may face

We of Earth call on you to recondiser your actions, Mr. Earlywine, and we call on the citizens of Perplex City to stand with us in rejecting your policies. Your attitudes and actions do not assist us in locating the Receda Cube; indeed, your interference only hinders our joint efforts.

However, despite our dismay at the unfortunate choices that Mr. Earlywine has made, we bear no ill will towards the people of Perplex City. Indeed, we consider the people of Perplex City to be our friends, and we hope that this parting between our respective cultures will be a brief one. In fact, the people of Perplex City can rest assured that we on Earth will continue our efforts to locate the Receda Cube despite this grave setback, and that we will ensure its security in the hopes that a physical gateway between Earth and Perplex City may someday be established, in spite of Mr. Earlywine's attitude towards the people of Earth.

And when that day comes, we sincerely hope that the representatives of Earth and the representatives of Perplex City will meet with good will towards all and malice towards none.

Sincerely yours,
