Here's to hoping that's a first draft, because it's definitely rough. While it definitely holds to the structure of a screenplay, it's in the very beginning stages of dialog. They should give me a crack at this.

Me too.

However, this is the legendary first draft that Garland punched out in about 48 hours. Hopefully, the dialogue has been spruced up to reflect the brilliance of the characters. As it is, this will certainly not be the first great video game movie.

The movie has a director... Neill Blomkamp. He's never directed a feature film, but has a bunch of sci-fi related commercials and short films under his belt (all available on You Tube)... and from that evidence, I think this movie will rock!

Here's some Q&A regarding Halo from Blomkamp himself.

Yeah, so I heard Neil Blomkamp is directing? I have to say, he's one of my favourite new directors in the short film industry. Taking into consideration that not everyone is a short-film freak like myself, I took the liberty of finding Blomkamp's best short film online for y'all.

It's called Alive in Joburg -- and it should give you a pretty good idea what this guys capable of.

Bad news? Perhaps not!
Movie studios back out of the deal!

http://www.variety.com/VR1117952317.html

Quote:
"What happened was this: Universal, on behalf of both studios, asked for a meeting with the filmmakers just prior to the due date of a significant payment. Basically, they said that in order to move forward with the film, the filmmakers had to significantly reduce their deals. They waited until the last minute to have this conversation. Peter and Fran, after speaking with their producing partners and with Microsoft and Bungee (the studio that designed the original game), respectfully declined."

While the exit of two studios would seem to imperil "Halo," Kamins said Microsoft is already in talks with other distribution partners. Prep work on the film continues, he said. One advantage is having Jackson and Walsh as exec producers: Most of the pre-production is being done at their visual effects studios in New Zealand, Weta Digital and Weta Workshop, so there will be no stoppage.

Is Universal missing a few brain cells?
What on earth are they thinking?!
Rolling Eyes

edt: actually, reading a bit, it seems part of it was the fact that MS was asking too much of a portion of the pay... come on MS, you're rich... you could fund the movie yourself.
Also some concern as to the 'newbieness' of Blomkamp... pft! Money can be made from non-superstardom. Fresh faces, cast and crew alike, as everyone knows, can be a big plus to a production. Risk? pft! You'd think the studios would have faith in the past success and reliability of Jackson and Weta...
The cost only just passing the $135M mark isn't really that expensive compared to high-cost flicks from previous years.

Well here's hoping whatever studio(s) they do get (Newline might be good?) will stick with it...

True, but they need the distribution channel. That's hard to put together from scratch and would put the theater chains in a bad spot with the studios (much like Microsoft does to the PC mfg such as Dell, etc.)

I meant in that why is MS making a big deal about the payment...? But, ultimately the problem was the studios were trying to change the contract, and Fran/Jackson/MS/Bungie said no, which is fair I guess.
I didn't mean that MS should fund the movie themselves Razz just that they have enough money that they could, so why make a big deal about their portion... but it's all business, and the principle of contracts Smile They're in their rights to turn down the contract alteration if they really want to, knowing the consequences (losing the studio(s))

I personally think that's awesome that Microsoft and Bungie did that. It shows that they will not be bullied when it comes to their baby. It actually puts me at ease that the film will actually be good, as apposed to the past attempts at making a video game into a film.
