ARGcheology
My apologies for the title -- there are just too many great puns to be made with "ARG"

Hi.

I'm still fairly new to ARGs in general, but I'm beginning to conduct some research into their history and aesthetics. In my day job, I'm a grad student studying video games from a literary critical point of view, so my interest here in ARG history is acknowledgedly academic.

My question though is first and foremost a practical one: How does one study the materials that make up an ARG after the game has completed and the sites, puzzles, and artifacts have disappeared? I know of some great archives of the bigger games, but on others (Urban Hunt is what I'm looking at right now) there doesn't seem to be a lot of archived or mirrored information and the original in-game sites have disappeared.

I'm prepared to admit that perhaps the experience of an ARG is fundamentally ephemeral (I think Jane McG makes this argument), but I think qualitative analysis of their material surfaces is important for posterity as well as aiding the development of newer and better content.

The UF archives are great in some regards, but since in most cases the puzzles under discussion are dead links, just seeing the answer in a spoiler tag doesn't help me understand what it was like to really play the puzzle.

ARGhive.com seems to do a great job of this with what it has so far, but is there any equivalent for smaller games, even ones that imploded? Does anyone else maniacally save a copy of every in-game page they come across? Is there a secret stash of this material somewhere? Is this really a problem?

In case you hadn't seen it yet, www.arghive.com has links to archives of Lockjaw, Metacortechs, The Beast and I Love Bees.

In addition, there were pretty complete guides to The Beast and Lockjaw, along with a nice new book about the player experience from Metacortechs.

A word of advice: Use these raw materials in your research as opposed to compilations from other sources, as those have shown a tendency to be inaccurate and incomplete, and these examples I've given are a true snapshot of things as they were during the games.

Last Call Poker has a great archive of the story and such listed under the muck.

In the case of Urban Hunt, I would suggest contacting the main PM directly - Dave Szulborski (aka cabalagent in UF). He might have some archives.

Catching the Wish only recently finished and while the main sites all changed to their "pre-wish" look, he will probably have the game versions available as well.

Thanks! So it looks like there is some stuff out there. And I can find bits and pieces with the wayback machine.

I'm not sure what you mean though, steve, about raw materials. I mean, any kind of summary is necessarily a contextualized, homogenized, condensed version of what actually happened, no matter how thorough it is, right? I guess that's all we have, though. The rawer the better.

Also, what do incomplete compilations are you referring to? Like wikipedia articles that more or less skim the surface?

And konamouse, that's a good idea. I'm trying to avoid that if all possible (I'm sure Dave's a busy guy), but I haven't ruled it out. I just finished his book, so part of my current motivation to find Urban Hunt material is so I can see some of the examples he writes about.

Yeah, I guess what I mean by 'raw materials' is that you could, if you want, go through, say, the Beast Guide and then read through the corresponding posts in the Cloudmakers Yahoo Group.

The good thing with the stuff on Cloudmakers is that they've lovingly re-hosted all of the sites from the game, and most of the links in the Guide still work. Combine this with the Cloudmaker player posts (if you have lots of time) and what you get is a real blow-by-blow account of how the game played.
