I stand corrected

Thank you for pointing that out. I notice that oriental was used about 350 other times in this forum, so I didn't realize that this was offensive.

Sorry to anyone that took offense.

More speculation

This is arrant speculation, but consider the following as planning behind card 256:

The puzzle scribe has called a meeting and asks for photos meeting certain criteria - digital snaps of friends or acquaintances, enough detail for identification, single subjects, no children, vacation pix, etc.

At a subsequent meeting, the photos are reviewed: Adrian's next-door-neighbor's aunt on a Mediterranean cruise, Fiona's saxophone teacher in Barcelona, the FedEx guy on a wine tour - you get the idea.

Someone says "That's Satoshi? I'd never recognise him out of uniform!" Someone else retorts that all FedEx drivers/postal workers/meter readers/whatever look alike and after the laughter dies down, Satoshi's the man.

Rather than visit Kaysersberg in person, it seems to me that the most effective way to explore that avenue is by direct mail. The French electoral roll is available to any French elector and, while it may not be used for commercial purposes, I think that a mailshot to one person in each household would be an acceptable use. The population is less than 3000 so there will be significantly fewer than 2000 households. The mailshot would, therefore, cost just under £1000. The first hurdle, however, is finding a registered French voter who is prepared to obtain a copy of the appropriate roll for us.

OK, my turn to try something

So, after reading 30 pages, which took pretty long might I add Smile, I'm officially addicted to this puzzle.

This is also my first post for perplex city Smile

I just ordered my first packages of puzzle cards and can't wait to get started, so I figured I'd start working on some puzzles that other people have.

OK, no more rambling.

I'm a student at the university of massachusetts in the US and would love to offer any american help that I can. Im currently in email conversations that are leading me to talking to someone from, hopefully, kayserberg. It should only take a day or 2 and I'll be able to have somewhat of a footsoldier in france who will be able to go to the hotel nearby and hopefully check out a guestbook or something that will help.

I'll be sure to let you all know how that goes Smile

 SUCCESS!!!

I have made some progress, actually, a lot of progress.

This is what I sent to my professor who is the chair of cultural studies at the university of massachusetts . . .

OK, so I hoped for a good response and he did even better with this . . .

Hello Chris,

The name of the town is Kaysersberg, which means (berg) "the mount of
(kayser = Cesar > tzar) the emperor. See the following site:
http://www.jedecouvrelafrance.com/f-3019.haut-rhin-kayserberg.html

How to contact someone there? See the following site
(http://www.ville-kaysersberg.fr/calendrier/index.php) and the email of
the Hotel de ville (town hall) infoSPLATville-kaysersberg.fr as well as the
phone number.

With a bit of lack and persuasion (you did a good job with me!) you may
be able to arouse the curiosity of someone there.

Bonne chance!

A good occasion for you to practice your French

Joseph E. Garreau, Ph.D. , Professor of French Studies
BLA & Language Coordinator - Department of Cultural Studies

There you have it folks, this is where someone fluent in French takes over, while I may be of Canadian descent, I am not fluent in French. Boh sites are in French, I'll start working on it though with online translators and my parents who both speak french. Good luck guys!!!!

Also, as you can see, he translated the town name to be:
"The Mount of the Emperor"

This may very well lead to something, maybe trying that as the solution, or possibly figuring out which emperor it is referring too perhaps. . . . .

Food for thought Smile

a little more info

so a little more info on those sites that i figured out using an online translator and what i can remember from high school french

The first site is a page within a larger website for the country of France,
this page is for Kaysersberg so there's probably not much useful info, but as usual I won't assume ANYTHING till it's solved.

The second site is the website for the 'inn' that is in kaysersberg. There is a phone number that I think I'm going to call in a couple hours, when it isn't like 5am in France Smile They probably wouldn't appreciate that.

Again, I'll keep you all updated. This is exciting!

Just wanted to add this site that I found and am working on

One last post for tonight

So this is my last update of the night.

I sent an email to the hotel asking them if there is anyone who speaks english that i could speak to and when should i call them.

I know what you're all thinking, and yes I translated it into french first, of course. Smile

So, hopefully I'll get a response soon, if not, I'll just call, and using my best french I'll ask for someone who speaks english, which isn't too hard.

Wish me luck Smile

Thoughts

Leading on from the translation "mount of the emperor" maybe thats supposed to lead us back to japan, ie mount fuji or somewhere where the Emperor is? Or somewhere related, like a myth with satoshi?
of course we could be on the totally right track with france in which case yay! Very Happy

A new avenue to explore maybe?

The province of Shaanxi in Northern China has been the administrative and cultural heart of more than 15 dynasties throughout the Chinese past. Numerous remains of palaces and imperial tombs, such as the burial mount of the Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi (221-210 BC) with the famous terracotta warriors, are spread in the loess planes and the surrounding mountains.

The German "Römisch-Germanisches Zentralmuseum Mainz " and the Chinese "Archaeological Institute of the Province Shaanxi" have been co-operating in the field of conservation of historical relics for more than 10 years now. During the last two years beautiful wall-paintings from several tombs dating from the Eastern Han (25-220 AD) and Tang (618-907 AD) dynasties had to be rescued as a result of commercial building activities.

some success

Hey guys, sorry I haven't updated recently.

I got in touch with a girl from the Inn in kaysersberg. I'm waiting for her response to a few questions I asked her, including, "Could you check your gestbook for me for a man named Satoshi?". I'll let you know what she says.

Cross your fingers!!

Erm.... I'm not sure if it's my misunderstanding (of your posts about contacting the town) or yours (about who you're contacting), but as the professor said in their email, "hotel de ville" is French for town hall, and is not a hotel or anything like that. Just thought it was worth mentioning.
