New ARG?
circlesilentwhispers

Just picked up on this today after seeing watchingcassie covering it on youtube. Seems to be a new-ish ARG, it seemed to start around the 18th October but I only started looking at it today and see no major developments as of yet so caught up quite easily. I was hoping to find some posts here but couldn't find any topics on it.

There are videos at: http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=circlesilentwhispers

and there's this http://www.circlesilentwhispers.com which has a blog which fills in some story info although it's still a bit vague.

There are some anagrams in the video descriptions and what looks like a set up for a dead drop. Don't really know the rules on spoilers here so I won't say anything more.

found out a bit more today from the forums. Turns out apparently that this is based in New Zealand. Anyone here willing to help us out in case of drops? To my knowledge, there's only a small number of people playing this right now, unfortunately :/

This ARG is over!

Just a quick update, it seems this one ended before it got going, the following is an excerpt from the domain host..

THIS SITE HAS BEEN TAKEN DOWN as of Oct 29, 2006 at 18:35 GMT-5. This site was a fan site for the YouTube based "Alternate Reality Game" where fans could talk about and track clues left in the videos for the purpose of fun. However, on 10/29/2006 the creator of this game posted a video with reversed audio that appeared to come from a 911 call involving a very disgusting allusion to a shooting. Based on this the site has been taken down and we urge everyone to stop following this ARG. The creator has very bad taste and should receive no attention for his/her twisted jokes. We do not plan to renew this domain.

I haven't been following any of the YouTube stuff, including this one, but this development seems really strange to me. I haven't heard the audio in question, so maybe I shouldn't comment, but I don't think I've ever heard of a registrar revoking someone's domain because their content was in bad taste. Certainly, if it was illegal (i.e. child pornography) it should be removed, but if every registrar imposed a no-bad-taste policy, the web would be a much smaller place -- possibly a better place, but certainly smaller.

I'm not saying this wasn't justified in this case because I haven't heard the offending material in question. I just think this sounds like an unusual statement from the registrar, and I can imagine lots of scenarios where one person's valid artistic expression might be another's "disgusting."

That's interesting. First time i've heard of a domain host shutting down a site. But, like you guys said, without access to the audio, we don't know exactly what is going on. I mean, it might just be that bad.

Oh well.

And yes, i checked out the source code and such to see if i could see any clues saying that this was just the next step in the ARG...and no, i couldn't find any. Looks legit...

Except. The blog is still being updated. The domain name registrar says that the main site, was taken down on Oct 29, but the blog is still up, still updating!!!

Hmm...how about the fact that the domain name registrar knew the phrase Alternate Reality Game, and the short form "ARG"? Could this be a red herring?

The fact that the registrar monitor the site content at all is enough to at least raise the possibility that this is somehow in-game. I did glance through the registrars standard agreement thing, and like most of these agreements, it includes a thing about revoking or denying your domain for whatever reason.

At any rate, I'm mainly interested because this could present a free-speech issue. Not that the site owner would have any legal recourse that I know of, but it would make me think thrice about registering a domain with this Namecheap.com even though I may well have agreed that the material in question was offensive and I doubt that I would ever have reason or desire to create content that most people would find offensive.

Actually, now that I think about it, assuming that the registrar notified the author before shutting down the site, the author could have pretty easily switched registration to somewhere else. It might have cost a few bucks, but it can be done pretty quickly I think. If they weren't presented that option in advance of the site being removed, and if namecheap.com is now holding the domain hostage, the original owner could probably sue to get it registered somewhere else.

It probably wouldn't be worth the trouble, though, for all I know.

Actually, the audio is still available. It's from the latest video on YouTube...wait a sec...here.

Apparently, it's a (somewhat edited) excerpt from one of the 911-calls that was phoned in during the shooting at Columbine High School.

From the second half of the audio: "Yes, I'm a teacher at Columbine High School and there is a student here with a gun." "Help - Help - Help - Help!" (The "Help!" is edited in repeatedly.)

Bad taste? Yeah, I guess...

But a registrar taking down a forum/messageboard-page where people merely discuss some video with "offensive" audio, which is actually hosted on a totally different site? If that isn't game-related in some way, UnFiction may be next! Foily!

According to namecheap.com, their parking pages allow you to add customized text. I would consider this in-game.

Justice.

Unfortunately it wasn't in game. WatchingCassie tried to shut me down.

Plus- the repeated audio is "get up."

And unfortunately circlesilentwhispers, you're breaking the Terms of Service by posting in this thread, so please stop.

Terms of Service wrote:
Users who are directly involved in the creation or maintenance of any Alternate Reality Game (whether in the role of Puppetmaster or in a Behind-The-Scenes position) are welcome to post as themselves in appropriate context, but not within a forum thread or section in which their game is being discussed. The only exception to this rule is when the game has reached a finite conclusion or ending, where people involved directly with the game are then welcome to discuss their game openly. If you are uncertain as to the appropriateness of a post in a thread or section devoted to your game, please contact a forum administrator or moderator. We will be happy to discuss the matter with you.

Users are explicitly forbidden to post as characters, whether in the capacity of a registered member or a forum guest, to post in a fashion designed to covertly influence or otherwise finesse players, or in an attempt to move a game forward. In this sense, the Unfiction forums are "out of game" and are not to become part of the "in game" experience or to be manipulated by Puppetmasters. This also pertains to people attempting to mislead other players ("hijacking" the game).

The IP address of each post is recorded in order to aid in the enforcement of this section of the TOS.

Thanks Phae for pulling out the appropriate sections for me to copy easily.

Actually, Rowan, i would say that circlesilentwhipsers is not breaking the TOS, becasue the game is over.

Damn straight its still going.
WatchingCassie got personal, instead of being professional.
Differences of opinion should have been discussed and as the above person mentioned the creator shouldve been given the option to pay to keep his site if WC didnt want in anymore, instead WC shut him down and kept his domain from him. Sounds bitter, twisted and jealous to me.
Ive heard the 911 video, its no more disturbing than watching the 6 oclock news. Get Real!

Be Well All !!!

interesting, but why would cassieiswatching want to shut down another ARG... and why would they go to the extent of contacting the domain host? Doesn't make a lick of sense to me. I've been in charge of a game that was running while CIW was running and never had any issues with this, besides how do you know it is CIW and not Sammeeeeees or Ny Takma or Human Pet or heck let's even call out 4orty2wo ... makes no sense whatsoever

(that is unless the PM of this was a co-pm at CIW and CIW knows about this game and they had a rough fallout, but still doesn't make much sense)
