So it is like the Neverending Story {book version, not the movie}, particularly the chapters revolving around the childlike goes to the historians room to have him repeat the story so far to Bastian {proof of reality and fiction merging}? That each character is both fiction AND reality - not only the characters in the book Bastian was reading but also Bastian himself as being in the book WE were reading?

For another Stephen King work, there's also "Umney's Last Case". In that story, the author changes places with one of the characters he has written.
