AFI Promo (some help?)

Hi,

I'm from another forum, and recently we've been taking part in an ARG-like game and we have reached a dead end. I didn't really know much about ARGs before I started playing this one, so I found this forum after doing some research. Since we're all pretty stuck, I was hoping members here would be willing to help us out. If this is a problem or if this is in the wrong forum I apologise.

The game appears to be a promo for the band AFI's new album, and it started on their message board back in October.

I - Weight of Words

On October 7th, a strange message was posted by someone named "invierno":

hey, anyone know why my name is on the weightofwords site??

Looking at this member's profile gave us the following information:

Birthday:
February 13, 1983
DF Chapter:
Southern California
Location:
los angeles
Real Name:
hector garcia

Wondering what site he was talking about, we decided to add ".com" at the end of "weightofwords, and sure enough this brought us to a site. This site is down now, but it originally showed a menu, a phone number, a list of names, and coordinates we still do not understand. One of the names on the menu was the name in the member's profile. A back up of the image is located here.

Originally, clicking on the number "17" brought you to the band's new website, located here. Unsatisfied, we decided to phone the number on the menu. This phone number brought us to the voicemail of someome named Charlotte (yet another name on the menu). The message was originally a list of numbers that, when converted alphanumerically, gave us "narutitridestsedam." Putting this into the address bar and adding ".com" brought us to yet another website, narutitridestsedam.com.

(Side Note: We are still unsure what this means, but some members claim that it is Bosnian for "on route thirty-seven," which is part of the title of the song "Rabbits are Roadkill on Route 37" which was released about a week prior. The song also features the lyrics "the words have now lost their weight," which ties in to the URL of the original website. Complete song lyrics are located here.)

II - Charlotte

This new website gave us a mysterious video of the band's vocalist having a bandage removed from around his head. He is also mouthing something, and there is a German female repeating numbers. Alphanumerically, these numbers didn't appear to mean anything. We were stuck here for a while, so we decided to give Charlotte another call. Her voicemail changed to the following message:

"Hi, this is Charlotte. If this is Georgia, I've been trying to reach you on IM but I can't so leave your number so we can talk."

Yet again, we were stuck. However, some smart people on the boards realised the words the vocalist was mouthing were the words "Tell Charlotte nothing." With the new-found knowledge that Charlotte used instant messaging, we tried adding "charlottenothing" to AIM. This was the correct route, and we got the following from her away message:

Please Understand: Prononcé comme une lettre Mais constitué de trois Elles ne sont que deux lettres A faire partie de moi Je suis unique et double Je suis bleu, noir et gris, Lisible dans les deux sens Et la meme dans les deux directions.

Translated, this gave us the following riddle:

Pronounce as a letter
But constitutes of three
They are not but two letters to form part of me
I am single and double
I am blue, black and gray
Readable in the two directions
And the same one in the two directions.

We figured the answer of the riddle was "eye," but didn't really know what to do with it. However, we discovered the French singular for "eye" was "un oeil," so we put this into the address box as well. This brought us to unoeil.com.

III - Five Flowers

This new site featured a poem made up of different song lyrics, and when you clicked on them they lit up. In the background was some eerie ambience. Using some guess-work, we tried several word combinations in the poem. The combination "Don't Believe Pain" ended up being correct, and this brought us to theprocessofseparation.com.

This site showed yet another video, which this time was a band member writing the following message:

Toronto Star
Classified
Antiques and Art
Plain Text Run Schedule 21 days
Five Flowers

For the following week or so we monitored this newspaper's classifieds, and eventually an ad from a music and comic shop in California showed up. This ad had a headline that said "Charlotte." We phoned it, but the guy didn't seem to know much. He did, however, respond to the words "five flowers." He said five of us could go in to get the five flowers, so five board members went to the store and fetched them.

"Five Flowers" actually ended up being a mysterious DVD, which we still don't understand. The DVD was simply a gold disc with the band's logo on it and a picture of a rabbit. The DVD's menu shows a looped clip of five white flowers dying, and the content of the DVD itself is quite mysterious. It simply shows a band member writing directions on a mirror, and a person in a car follows them to a building. In the basement, the member who was writing on the mirror sits in the darkness and holds a red ball of some sort out, and the DVD ends. We've looked at every frame of the video and can't seem to find any hidden messages.

A link to a ripped copy of the DVD is here.

So yeah, that's where we've been since December. We're not sure if it's over or not, but we still think there might be something we're missing considering the mysterious nature of the video. So, please, if the experts here can help us we'd really appreciate it. I'll try to answer any of your questions to the best of my ability.

ETA another section. There have been some recenty developments which probably don't have anything to do with this all, but they might. Some random messages have been appearing on sites related to the band, but they might not having anything to do with this. I thought I'd add them anyway:

Red Herrings?

About a week ago, the band's sound guy Mikey Rhino updated his Myspace with some random things. He has used his Myspace to give us small hints in the past, but we're not sure if these parts are just personal or random updates. I thought it would be good to list them here anyway.

i.
His headline now reads "like a kitten".
ii.
There is an arrow pointing up to the "A" in his "About Me:" section.
iii.
This image was added to his images with the caption "On the darkest of days."

His profile is located here if you want to view it for yourself.

(Side Note: We've identified that the painting on his profile is possibly a depiction of The Annunciation.)

Also, the band's Myspace profile has been updated with the following French poem:

Par désespoir de l'amour qui n'est pas échu Par désespoir de la mort qui déjà m'a prévu Par désespoir du sexe qui nous fut à charge Par désespoir de l'homme qui n'est que misère Par désespoir du temps qui n'est que poussière Par désespoir de l'art qui n'a pas visité Par dés- espoir de l'âme que l'on n'a pas trouvée

This appears to be an actual poem by Jude Stefan, and a translation can be found here

Thanks for all your help!

So, AFI made their own puzzle trail?
My my, clever of them; credit where credit is due. Wink

Anyway, considering the video, I would look at those directions again, and the exact way in that they were written. Perhaps follow them a specific start point, like that comic shop where you got the DVD. Text will rarely not yield some form of clue, where no else exists.

See if you can suss out where exactly any of the locations in the video are, especially where the person was driving. Might be something to that as well.

And scan the rest of the DVD for other features!

We actually pondered following the directions ourselves, but we weren't sure. The coordinates on the top of this image (the image that pretty much started it all) point to a venue called the Phoenix, but we don't really know what to make of it. We know the band have a history with the Phoenix (some of their first shows were played there, and they talk about it a lot...the even wrote a song about it), but it's just been hard to tell if it has any relevance. We looked into the possbility of it being a starting point, but the landmarks and surrounding areas on Google Earth don't really match up. Ditto with the shop as the starting point.

Thanks for the reply!

The game might be on hold for the moment, I'm thinking maybe until February 13th the birthday of the person in the first clue, that is what jumped out at me when I first read this.

I don't know either. Maybe because jordang started it here and maybe a moderator can move it to News & Rumors.

By the way: This one has been mentioned before in the unforums. It did not go that deep and the only new information that is different to your's jordang is, that the coordinates you mentioned point to the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma, CA. You can find the thread Breakfast of the Champions over here.

Greets,
Patrol

There has been a new update to this thing.

Today, one of the characters (charlottenothing) signed on to AIM. Her away message was "Off myspacing." Searching for her name brought you to her Myspace profile ( http://myspace.com/charlottenothing ), and viewing her friends brought you to the profile of someome named Apple. Apple's profile then immediately brings you to http://theinterviewwitness.com which shows a creepy video with backwards audio. Will post that once it's reversed.

EDIT: Here's a link to the reversed audio
http://s64.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=089LFMNTYG8OT104QX67BAZI1Y

Can't really tell what it says, but this is the most I can make of it:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
"It was October 1971. Everything was hunkey dorey, and i was listening ??? at 2:04am I found what I was looking for."

Okay, I got the reverse audio wrong. It says something like "2:04 in." The important part is the portion I couldn't make out though, which sounded like "eight."

"Hunky Dory" happens to be an album by David Bowie which came out in 1971. Track eight is called "Andy Warhol," and about 2:04 into the song he sings "Tie him up when he's fast asleep."

If you try this URL it brings to to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
http://tiehimupwhenhesfastasleep.com

...which has the same whois info as all the other sites.

I posted something that pertains to this back in October of last year right here. Just trying to tie everything together.

my friend realixed somthing that might helpyou out. so in the phenix theatre you should look under the stage. read the song lryics:
I remember when I was told a story of
crushed velvet, candle wax, and dried up flowers.
The figure on the bed,
all dressed up in roses, calling...
beckoning to sleep...offering a dream.

The words were as mystical as purring animals
The circle of rage...the ghosts on the stage appeared.
The time was so tangible I'll never let it go.
Ghost stories handed down, reached secret tunnels below.

No one could see me.

I fell into yesterday.
Our dreams seemed not far away.
I want to, I want to, I want to stay
I fell into fantasy.

The words were as mystical as purring animals.
The circle of rage...the ghosts on the stage appeared.
The time was so tangible, I'll never let it go.
Ghost stories handed down, reached secret tunnels below

No one could see me.

I fell into yesterday.
Our dreams seemed not far away.
I want to, I want to, I want to stay.
I fell into fantasy.

The girl on the wall always waited for me, and she was always smiling.
The teenage death boys, the teenage death girls...
and everyone was dancing.
Nothing could touch us then,
no one could change us then, and everyone was dancing.
Nothing could hurt us then, no one could see us then,
and everyone was dancing.
Everyone was dancing.

No one could see me.

I fell into yesterday.
Our dreams seemed not far away.
I want to, I want to, I want to stay
I fell into fantasy.

Our dreams seemed not far away.
Our dreams seemed not far away.
Our dreams seemed not far away.

I fell into fantasy.

The http://tiehimupwhenhesfastasleep.com/ site now reads

Quote:
February 15th – February 27th
From South to North, West to East
No fire will burn
But there will be blood.

Which takes us to

http://tiehimupwhenhesfastasleep.com/blood.html

Which reads

Quote:
Listen to Brandon but do not ask him
He who knows wears it on his sleeve.
He sells the rest to every guest,
If you propose the answer is free.
Any ring will do…
