Exciting! We really are getting close to the solve of this one.

Just one thing I've been thinking of-
If somebody were to contact the town hall of the town that I lived in, and my town hall had nothing better to do than to research me, they'd be able to find lots of info. Firstly, they'd be able to give my address, phone number, etc. You know, the info you give when you file taxes and stuff. They'd also be able to find articles from the local newspaper that have mentioned me (there's about a dozen or so). Basically, if they gave this information to somebody, they'd have a pretty good idea of where to find me.

That's situation one.

Situation two -
I took a trip to Tennessee last year for a big improv competition. I did not check into the hotel - the entire reservation was under my team leader's name. Basically, if you did research, there would be no information that I was every in Tennessee.

Unless...you had found an article in my local newspaper about how me, and the other people on my team, were going to Tennessee.

So, unless Satoshi lives in Kaysersberg, we may not be able to get much info on him unless we can figure out where he does live.

Just some two cents worth. It'll be interesting to see how this plays out.

Another idea that I've thought up: the 6 degrees chain-email solution.

I'm not sure if this has already been tried, but I was reading about a study like this in the newspaper.

Directions:
If you want to participate, just copy the following e-mail below, and follow its directions.

Code:
This email is part of a puzzle. It does not ask for any money or personal information.  Read on and you can help a large global community to solve a massive problem.

There is a game that exists called Perplex City.(Think perplexity) This is an alternate reality game where the ultimate objective is to find a hidden cube somewhere on earth to help the citizens of a fictional world known as Perplex City. Another part of the game, though, is a series of 256 puzzles that could be solved in any way possible. Some solutions have involved codes, other languages including ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs, and to the extent of some players in the game actually having to publish a book to solve a puzzle.

But this is where our request comes in. There is a puzzle that many of us, hundreds actually, are trying to solve. The puzzle's title is "Billion to One". The puzzle is only a picture of a man who is clearly eastern Asian, probably Japanese or Chinese. There is Japanese text, however, that roughly translates to "Find me". A hint from the puzzle creators has revealed that the name of the man is "Satoshi". That is the whole puzzle.

Those of us that are trying to solve the puzzle aren't entirely sure what the solution should be, whether it's his location, or full name, or some code that only he possesses, but we are pretty sure that this will turn out to be a six-degrees-of-separation type of problem. After many people who were familiar with architecture did research on the buildings in the background of the photo, the location, we think, has been traced to Kayserberg, Alsace, France.

This is where we are hoping for your help. In an attempt to do a six-degrees type problem solve for this, we are hoping that you will send this along to five or six friends that you feel have a chance of knowing Satoshi.

You can see a picture of Satoshi at http://billion2one.org/satoshi.jpg.
If you have recieved this e-mail and think that you know who Satoshi is, please visit http://forums.unfiction.com or http://billion2one.org/.

For the safety of your identity, if you help us out by forwarding this message, we recommend sending this e-mail to yourself, and carbon copying it to those you want to send it to. This prevents having a long list of names in the "To:" line after each generation.

Please help us try to find Satoshi. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.

- The players of Perplex City and Unfiction.com

I copied most of it from SpartanCavie, because he summed up the problem to an "outsider" so elegantly.

Mathematically speaking, if 20 people e-mail this to 5 different people, and they email it to five people, etc., this e-mail will (theoretically) reach 1 billion people in 11 "generations".

Please participate! This really could work!

EDIT: Thanks ixalon. Made the changes.
DOUBLE EDIT: Good point, Cabbage. Made some changes to the opening. I wonder if it is possible to send an e-mail through the unforum system to everybody active on the PXC boards.
THE TRIPPLE EDIT: Working on an HTML version. Will post it later today. Thanks for the suggestions x.

Nice clear explaination. Smile The only thing I would suggest changing is removing the mention of $200,000 which will likely get the email flagged as spam. You need to make it clear that this isn't for monetary gain (chain letters which are to make money are illegal.)

You'll also need to disassociate the cube and monetary reward with finding Satoshi; when putting together b2one.org MC were really keen that either the mention of the prize was removed or a message was added telling people that he's not going to be of any help in the cube hunt. Smile

Also, if you want, you can use http://billion2one.org/satoshi.jpg as the image URL we'll be able to keep a track on how many people are looking at the pic - it'll add to the web visits stats on http://www.billion2one.org/?o=stats

I don't want to pour scorn on this idea, because let's face it, we need to try anything (legal) that we can, but personally, if I knew nothing about this, and I read the first sentence, I would go straight for the delete key. Maybe that's just me?

Could it be reworded somehow? Perhaps something like:

Quote:
This email is part of a puzzle. Please don't delete it! Read on and see if you can help a large gaming community to solve a worldwide conundrum...

That's not very good, but it has got round the mention of "chain letter" at the beginning. You could incorporate that paragraph once you have them hooked.

I mean people get a bit paranoid (and perhaps rightly so) about things coming into their mailbox, and I expect a large number of people to not forward it however it is worded (unfortunately for us).

Is this fair comment?

Not that I'm suggesting doing such a thing, but the sad fact is the best way to get an email forwarded is by saying something like "if you send this email to 5 friends in the next 24 hours you'll find love/good-fortune/blah/blah/etc."

I haven't the foggiest why people still forward these things, but you'll get it round a few million kids within a week. I still get the odd one or two from people I've told numerous times to never forward me such things.

If you want to make a letter people will read. Make it look professional.

Take a hint from emailings that come from big businesses. The ones we do actually read, that could still be considered spam.

Like NCSoft, or Blizzard, or Monster.com ... they all send regular mailings
to people on their lists. These emails have disclamers, and usually use a fancy mix of linked images and text. They look professional.

The idea is ... keep the format EXACTLY like billion2one.org , Use the same yellow background, put a simple link to their page but make it clear that no clicks are needed, link in a pic of satoshi, and remember to name it in a way that if they have images off, it will be clear this is the image of the guy. Really the more professional it looks the more seriously it will be taken.

A straight text email will still get some action, but it wont be taken as seriously, people will assume you are some nutcase and delete it without even checking. (people NEVER check stuff before hitting reply or deleting, This is why so many hoaxes spread so fast, people are too lazy to google apparantly)

So first impressions are KEY, make people know this is no joke. take your time and make the HTML email look REALLY professional. if you take this really seriously, other people who know nothing about it will take it seriously.

PS: Dont ask them not to delete it, thats the first thing that they will do.
Dont ask them to do anything, just present the problem in the best light possible, people will make their own choices, but a friendly entrance to this puzzle will encourage those who could be interested.

Another quick thought, once you guys come to a finalized version of this emailing. Everyone who has a myspace or other simmilar site, should put it into a Bullitin for all their friends to send around.

Viral Myspace ads spreads SO quickly.

The List

I managed to access a kind of directory listing for France. It provided me with a list of all 30ish Satoshi's currently living there. Name, address and phone number are all included.

My French and Japanese is not sufficient to actually communicate with these people. I have already attempted three of the names with failure resulting only from an complete inability to communicate with them. It was clear, however, that all those called were comfortable with French and Japanese. They attempted both with me.

I don't want to post the whole list here, and wind up flooding these poor people with calls from around the world.
If someone on this forum is fluent, or close, in both French and Japanese, please email me, and I will share the list with you.
I will only do this for one person, as per the above reason.

So, any takers?

angadeon (spat) gmail d0t com

PS: I think it goes without saying that any results from this list will have to be shared with myself and the forum. I have no need to be on the leaderboard as first to crack this card.

Good point. I fell into the same trap that I was highlighting with the other message. Duh...

I've gotten the HTML completed! X is right, this does look a LOT better. It really looks like an official e-mail, and people are much less likely to delete it. Basically, I just centered it around the color and style theme from billion2one.org.

Just one problem left - How do you send HTML in an e-mail?

HTML Email
Lookin' good.

Alright. Here is the HTML code for the e-mails.

Directions
1.In your e-mail client, go to [Edit] -> [Select All] -> [Copy]
2. Enter your e-mail sender. Create a new mail, and paste into the e-mail view
3. The proper e-mail should show up NOTE: I have confirmed that this works in Hotmail/Windows Live, Gmail, and Yahoo mail. See x's instructions below for information on how to e-mail this through Microsoft Outlook. If you have any problems with your e-mail service, please let me know immediately!
4. IMPORTANT: In the "To:" line of the e-mail, send it to YOURSELF. Then, in the line that says "Bcc:", put the addresses that you want to send it to (This is to prevent these e-mails from containing hundreds of e-mail addresses as they get passed around).

Anyway, here is the HTML:

UPDATE: There are problems with copying and pasting the code, as I have discovered. So, instead, I have attatched the HTML code, and I will include a link to the page online, so that you can just copy the source code. (link-here). Hope this doesn't hinder the ability for the e-mail to be passed on.

Let's cross our fingers that this will help us in our search!

P.S. Any comments on improving the e-mail are greatly appreciated!

Ooh thats perfect!

Here is a page helping outlook users with the process of sending this to
others from the web page (using IE)

http://www.slipstick.com/mail1/html.htm

Its very simple.

There are several ways but in IE, from the web page given above

File > Send > Page by Email,

is the easiest way i can see.

I have sent this out to my family and friends and i will also post this into
myspace. This is gonna work good. chain-letter emailings FTW!!!

Ive also printed off like 20-30 of these, and im gonna post them up in public places. I suggest you do the same. Think of this like a marketing business, we are selling Satoshi to the public. The more people we hit the better our chances that we hit some people who are interested.

Really if i learned nothing else from doing chain scheme businesses, its how to market successfully. Im rather excited now Smile woot!
