Advertising?

As you may know, my ARG is sort of limping along with only 2 or 3 players. any way I can grab somebody's attention?

Well, I would say that you need to take a step back away from your game and determine why it isn't attracting/keeping players?

Is it because the storyline isn't appealing to players? Is it puzzle problems? Is it a lack of/too much interaction?

Are the players psyched enough about your game to go out and recruit other players? Are they going out and talking about to other people who might be interested?

Any of those could be the reason your game isn't catching on the way you had hoped. Or it could just be there is a glut of games right now and if your game is a niche type game (appealable only to specific players), you just might have the bad fortune of running a game at the wrong time.

However, the last thing you would want to do right now is stop the game simply because it doesn't meet your expectations. Players can be very put out by PMs simply just walking away from a game and if you ever do decide to run another game again, they might be unwilling to take a chance on your game, shrinking your player pool and making it more likely that you would pull out a second time. Finishing out a game when it isn't going the way you want is not only a good learning experience, but it shows players that you're doing this more for them than your own ego. And that could help any games you have in the future.

I don't know exactly what game you're running so I can't offer any specifics. If you're just looking for ways to advertise, you might want to look at the thread on The Reveal to see if any of those might work for you. I see that you tried to get help in chat, but as there aren't many people around on a Saturday afternoon, you have a have a little bit of patience to get an answer.

Players

I agree with Rowan (as I should) in that there are a lot of games going on right now. This means that people are spending a lot of time playing 3 or 4 games at a time.

It's good that more games are becoming available for new players to get involved with. It's bad, though, because it leaves us (the creators) only a few dedicated players per game if things start moving too fast or too slow for people to follow all of the games that they would like to. This is why you may actually have some people, who were players before, getting into a more "lurker" role.

You also have to take into account that this is a busy time of year for people. Mid-Terms, Christmas shopping, vacation planning and everything else that goes on in the months of November and December (two months, in addition to August, that are really bad launching months - as far as marketing goes).
