[PUZZLE] [SPEC] Wave 4 Risk Game

I hope nobody minds. I'm starting a new thread exclusively focused on trying to use the Wave 4 number strings for a Risk game.

Connections from Strings to Risk
- There are a total of 42 numbers.
- There are 42 territories in Risk.
- There are 11 numbers that start with "1-" and "2-" each, and 10 numbers that start with "3-" and "4-".
- In a 4-player game of Risk, two players start with 11 territories and two start with 10 territories.
- The numbers show ownership at the end of a round.
- Players 1 through 4 each take a turn, after Player 4 has finished their turn, it is the end of a round, and at this point the territory ownership has been recorded.
- There is only a number where a battle has been fought or ownership has changed in some other way, in that territory during that round. This means that where several repeats of the same number are shown, they have successfully defended and held ownership in each of those rounds.
- As only ownership changes are recorded, we have no way of knowing how long each player held the territory. So for a short string, the numbers recorded could be at the end of rounds 4, 9, and 16.

I had a completely random thought this morning. Probably far out there, but it never hurts to spec... and, I don't know if this has been shot down already. The mega-thread's way too... mega. Perhaps a compilation of all the ideas that have been shot down is in order as well?

[highlywildspeculation]

What if each string didn't represent a turn, but a specific country? The number before the first dash represents the player who started the game with it. (In the rules, in setup, player 1 picks a country and places a unit there, then player 2 chooses one, on and on until all 42 countries have been picked. That'd also explain why it stops with the last two strings being 1 and 2.) The section in the center may denote either attacks from that country towards either another player (Player 1, 2, 3, 4), or direction the attack is headed. The .5's would then be withdrawn attacks against that player (Or, maybe, it's a way to differentiate from multiple possible targets). The number after the last dash could then be the player who had control of the country at the end of the game.

Then, if we're given both the start and the end locations, the trick would be to figure out what country is what, and follow the troop movements. Maybe tracing the movement spells something out or is a hint.

Of course, that then leaves the matter of the dice and blobs.

Its great to hear people chatting about the Risk idea, but there is already a dedicated Risk thread (linky) so we probably ought to keep it all in one place, and yup PMAvers that is almost exactly what we have been thinking, although as we think they might be playing Team Risk there are other things to take into account. There is a situation in Team Risk where two team mates both have the same number of pieces in a territory, so neither actually owns it, and it is possible that this is what the 1.5, 2.5, and 3.5 numbers are. Here is a link to more about that.

The original thread (linky) is well worth reading though to see what ideas have been knocking around.

This may actually already be solved

There has been movement on this elsewhere, with unfortunately a totally non -risk related partial solve, sorry.

See the wiki for more details:

Hmmmm
An interesting yokey thing that I found

I was flicking (not litterally) through some of my perplex city cards and reading a few of them when I read #33 Turnabout and it says the bands name is "Roll For Damage" I though this would be a good place to post it seeing as it might and probably does have something to do with the Risk type genre.....

"Roll for damage" is a pretty common term in tabletop roleplaying, and I'm inclined to say that the band name references that rather than Risk. Still, anything is possible at this point.

I can't seem to find the reference, but I'm pretty sure in some interview with the band they said how they were into RPGs and that's where the name came from.

If you look at the names of some of their albums, like "Random Encounter" and "Take Initiative", you realize they must really be hardcore RPG geeks. With guitars. And groupies.

<Cobalt> <Six> HI Alejo, firstly I'd just like to say squee. Now, how did you guys come up with your name?
<Alejo> When we first started RFD, there was a huge fad at home about these paper-and-dice based adventure games you guys had come up with, and we just kind of thought it sounded cool.
<Alejo> We kind of regret that's it's stuck, actually, but it's a little late to change, isn't it?

It's in the chat with Alejo (8th Feb 2006 - good grief, was it really that long ago?!?), which can be found here on the wiki
So no, I don't think it will have anything to do with the Risk type stuff.
