[LGFL] [PUZZLE] An Orderly Hanging

Lore Trial #6

We have two pictures in the image directory for this trial with a list of men.
Picture One
Picture Two

The names are: John Martin, Mike Ramsey, Cxc Thva, U.M. Gbca, "Wugu", Fo, Aujha Rct, something i cant read

Chet Wyant, "Bob" Spires, "Bob" Edwards, again cant read, Sam Rais, Tom McKevitt, George Penn, D.W. Mil(???), Dell Neil, Frank Gibson, "Curley" O'Brien, and Joe Higdon

Now, based upon the flavor text, I was guessing that this had something to do with baseball (3 mentions of baseball cards, "a batty man of average proportions" and "in all its batty and average glory"). However, I was only able to find three men that played baseball, and only two of them had a batting average under .260. And I have absolutely no idea why some of the names would be encoded. Cxc Thva? UM Gbca? Wugu? Fo? Aujha Rct? Why those 5 and not all the rest? I also don't know if the names that we cant read are important or not. I'm hoping not, but you never know.

The first page of photos definitely looks altered. I wouldn't worry about the photo with reflection obscuring the caption -- important clues have obviously been added for us to read.

I see "O.W.MIJ...." in the reflection on the 2nd page, but again I wouldn't think any real info is there -- this 2nd layout looks more like the original labels for some reason.

Both images are named "miners", which could be a clue to the minor leagues in baseball.

Nice thought even though I couldn't get anything to come of it. Checked the Minor League Baseball page and the only result I got was for John Martin. I found a link to Pat Doyle's Old-Time Baseball DB that I thought would work, but you have to buy the database and so scratch that idea.

The new finds on the journals mention a shift cipher. She also mentions "C.R." for SOmewhere in Time. The "C.R." is Christopher Reeves (I've seen the movie several times) so his name may be the clue to unlocking the shift (though it may just be a red herring). I've tried the Ceasar Shift but can't seem to come up with anything legible. I can't quite figure out the "baseball" connection either.

Journal One
Journal Two

Okay, the two people Aunt Anna says seem familiar are probably John Martin and Mike Ramsey, the two baseball players I found before.

She then goes onto talk about shift ciphers as lelepooh said. Not straight ROTs, but as the talk on the second page goes, more than likely a Vigenere cipher. She says that the children used the scores from the latest swimmeet to determine the keyword. Based on the flavor text of the original puzzle, I tried using keywords based off of the batting averages of the two men.

John Martin: .205
Mike Ramsey: .279

Depending on how you parse the numbers (2-0-5 or 20-5), what value you assign A (0 or 1), and what order you take them in - you can get a number of different keywords

I have tried: cafche, checaf, tfche, chetf, sebgd, bgdse
I haven't gotten any results Sad

Tried using the 1982 jersey numbers for them (5 and 33) and the score from their last game of the season (5-4 against Chicago on Oct 3, 1982).

No joy. Sad

Also: The similarity in names between the miner called "Aujha Rct" and the Cardinals player "Joaquin Andujar" keeps bugging me.

ETA: Game 7 (Oct 20, 1982) scores in the World series were 3-6 and also don't seem to work.

Minor correction: fourth name should be "U. M. Gbce", and I agree that the hard to read one is actually "O. W." rather than "D.W."

Once again, strifey is the man

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Yes Virgina, it is a Vigenere. Keyword AJBCDA (comes from .091 .230 the averages in 1982)

Solution: Cobre Valley Center for the Arts in Globe, AZ

I happened to be up at 6, this morning when the last clue came out. I was just too tired to figure out the real "key" and post after I got the solve. So, Rowan beat me to the explanation of how it IS Vigenere and what the true key is for that. Here's to seeing the last of that one.
