If anyone wants a video recording of the Flash (to make for easy pausing and stepping forward/backward), there's one here: http://perplexcitycardcatalog.com/notes/FirefoxScreenSnapz002.mov

I'm working on extracting out good stills of the paths. Edit: added.

So, the four lines:

L R
S D

Each go (using U=up R=right D=down L=Left):
L - L L D D L
R - R U U R R R U L
D - R D D D R D L
S - L L L L L L L L L (diagonal:dl)

Am I the only one who thinks this refers to number stings on the cards, 1, 2, 3 and 4 are directions and the .5 is the diagonal, I just don't know how to put this all together. It seems too coincidental thought that the last one is about the order of them, and this one is the meanings.

look at the key compared to key square on the map of perplexcity... follow out the number strings, and lets see where these journeys end.

It actually fits pretty well. The blocks are sort of differing lengths--for instance the lower-left line that goes out 9 spaces I thought didn't fit at first, but then realized one of the diagonal streets intersects a "regular sized" block and turns it into two smaller ones.

Significance? I don't know. Maybe the paths lead somewhere, or maybe this is just a primer for something else (similarities to the unknown number strings on the cards has come up in IRC.)

so far in my looking, only one number string matches up to the map lines...
58+ 2-21122214-4

2 is the second player (if we are using risk)
4 at the end cooresponds to Asia (which is in the upper right part of the risk board)
21122214 cooresponds to right up up right right right up left which ends at the museum of navigation on myers avenue.

on with the search...

It's very interesting.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

The pathways from the four dots go in incremental units as follows:

(where L = left, D = Down, R = Right, U = Up)

1st (top-left) dot: LLDDL
2nd (top-right) dot: RUURRRUL
3rd (bottom-right) dot: RDDDRDL
4th (bottom-left) dot: (LLLLLLLLL(D/L diagonal))

Comparing these with the numbers on the cards... check out the one known canonically as 218-

1-44334-3 -- looks an awful lot like the first pathway shown...

Assuming 4 = left, 3 = down (and from there working to 2 = right and 1 = up, the four pathways shown are:

44334 (middle of 218-, which starts with 1- (1st dot / position / player?))
21122214 (middle of 058+, which starts with 2-)
2333234 (middle of 136+, which starts with 3-)
4444444443.5 (where 3.5 is down-left diagonal -- middle of 090+, which starts with 4-)

Hope this helps.

Line Terminations

This may not be relevant, but was sparked by a question that Dysper asked in IRC and I figured I would post it for completeness. So for what it's worth...

The L line ends at card #143, at the corner of Shone St. and Holl Ln., next to the Maitland Museum.

The R line ends at card #106, at the corner of Portside Rd. and Myers Ave, next to the Museum of Navigation.

The D line ends at card #146, at the corner of The Shift and some little side street, with nothing terribly noteworthy at that intersection.

The S line ends at card #175, at the corner of Stratus Ave and Stephenson Rd, next to Fraction Media and an unlabeled building that looks the same as the Museum of Navigation.

Edit: The "D" line is the odd one out--it doesn't end at in intersection with clear street names or landmarks. When I look at the 3D map on the card backs, I'm not quite sure how far some of the D's cover--for instance, there's one diagonal street that might be a separate intersection or might be a 5-way intersection (I have one of those near my house, and I hate it!) The final location may very well be the corner of The Shift and Descent Ln. on card #145, but there's nothing noteworthy there, either.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

I've tried chaining the paths together in sequence (1 continuing 1's path, 2 continuing 2's path, etc.), and that fails on the second go-round when trying to attach 040- to 029+. Additionally, it ignores the numbers at the end of the strings.

If we assume that all strings starting with 1- start from the top-left point of key square (each one starts fresh), do the numbers at the tail ends of the strings mean anything?

Hmm...

The paths in the demo have letters attached...

1st:
218- : 1-44334-3
According to the map, the last leg of this path is HOLL LANE.
Going on the supposition that the number at the end of the string is the letter to take,
3rd letter = L

2nd:
058+ : 2-21122214-4
According to the map, the last leg of this path is MYERS AVENUE
4th letter = R

3rd:
3-2333234-1
According to the map, the last leg of this path is DESCENT LANE
1st letter = D

4th:
4-4444444443.5-1
According to the map, the last leg of this path is STRATUS AVENUE
1st letter = S

This seems like a coincidence... but... can anyone extend it out for all 42 strings?

To bring in some solving skills from this Perplexorum post:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Based on chat in IRC, and cross referencing the work being done on UnF, we have:

1) Applying the directions CT shows us to the streetmap of perplex city starting on the corner of key square gives us paths down the roads that fit.

2) CT's four routes, when written assuming 1,2,3,4 as n,e,s,w match up to four of the number strings we already have from the cards.

NW corner: WWSSW matches number string 218(-) 1-44334-3
NE corner: ENNEEENW matches 058(+) 2-21122214-4
SE corner: ESSSESW, 136(+) 3-2333234-1
SW corner: WWWWWWWWW(SW) 090(+) 4-4444444443.5-1

3) If you look at the roads the paths finish on, and take the nth letter, where n is the number on the end of the matching card string, you get the letter CT labels his paths with.

NW: Holl Lane, 3rd, L
NE: Myers Avenue, 4th, R
SE: Descent Road, 1st, D
SW: Stephenson Road, 1st, S

In short, to change one of our strings into a letter, you:

From the digit before the -, you have a corner of key square to start at. (1 is top left, 2 is top right, going clockwise).

Use the number string to move along the streets.

When you reach the end, take the nth letter of its name, where n is the number after the - at the end of the string.

Go forth and translate...

PXC never ceases to crack me up at this point. Without CT prodding us along inch by inch, we would never be solving any of this. I wonder if the original intent was to have us figure this out without any help. Just leave us with Wave 4 until someone found the cube (but I think it's pretty obvious without CT, the cube would probably never have been found).

As for this puzzle, I think all the number sequences may chain together off of each other around the map. Chances are there's only one chain that works off of each end point. Thus all the numbers would be used, and you would have a whole sequnce of stuff to work with after that.

I disagree -- I think that each string starts at one corner of key square. Of course, the only reason I think this is that you can then get a letter for each string that way. I haven't tried chaining them all together (i.e. starting the path of string #2 from the end of string #1's, or starting the path of string #5, which is the next one that starts with "1-", at the end of string #1), but I'd be suprised if that worked, since there are a lot of ".5" numbers in the strings, and each of those require you to be at an intersection with a diagonal street.

My thoughts exactly.

I can't believe for a moment that anyone expected us to figure this out without the (quite frankly) bludgeoning we've been given. Both starting from such a random location (seriously, why start from Key Square unless you've been told?) and the resulting string, from what i've seen so far, not exactly screaming "you're making progress!" means that we probably wouldn't have been going in this direction for very long, if we'd thought of it.

Hi guys, long time no see.

So, I was curious about something in this latest update that no one else seems to have mentioned. I noticed that throughout the animation, the key retains the ability to be clicked, though nothing obvious happens when you do so. As a last page in the animation, the key fades in the jumble of letters to the white box on a black background reading "Motion, held fast." and a rectangular area in the center is "clickable", even though the area clickable on the key was never rectangular. Do we perhaps still have something to find here?

I've included a picture of the last page with the rough area that can be clicked outlined.
