[OT]Cruel to be Kind, London, Dec 9th

Cruel 2 B Kind is a game of benevolent assassination.

At the beginning of the game, you and a partner-in-crime are assigned a secret weapon. To onlookers, it will seem like a random act of kindness. But to a select group of other players, the seemingly benevolent gesture is a deadly maneuver that will bring them to their knees.

Some players will be slain by a serenade. Others will be killed by a compliment. You and your partner might be taken down by an innocent group cheer.

You will be given no information about your targets. No name, no photo, nothing but the guarantee that they will remain within the outdoor game boundaries during the designated playing time. Anyone you encounter could be your target. The only way to find out is to attack them with your secret weapon.

Watch out: The hunter is also the hunted. At the beginning of the game, you and your partner will also be assigned your own secret weakness. Other pairs of players have been given your secret weakness as their secret weapon, and they're coming to get you. Anything out of the ordinary you do to assassinate YOUR targets may reveal your own secret identity to the other players who want you dead.

As targets are successfully assassinated, the dead players join forces with their killers to continue stalking the surviving players. The teams grow bigger and bigger until two final mobs of benevolent assassins descend upon each other for a spectacular, climactic kill.

Will innocents be caught in the cross-fire? Oh, yes. But when your secret weapon is a random act of kindness, it's only cruel to be kind to other players...

I'm hosting one of these games in Soho on December 9th. Everyone is more than welcome to join in. Sign up here:

And if anyone is slightly worried about email on their phone, it's reasonably easy to check with your provider. However a gmail account and GPRS should work very well as well.

Fantastic idea! I was so jealous of the games fest they had in the US recently.

[Edit]It also prompted a good hour of fiddling with my %$(*£)$ phone, which won't let me at my gmail. Time for an upgrade methinks.

Sounds like a great idea!
Sadly, I'll be nowhere near London on that day - but I look forward to hearing about how it went.

Hello Assassins!

This is an urgent message about Cruel 2 B Kind London.

Your UK mobile phones really don't like our email-based game system. 80% of you have been unable to confirm your mobile registration. The website shows only 5 confirmed teams, but we have over 20 registered teams. We know you really want to play. So the game must go on!

Here's how it will work. You will play tomorrow WITHOUT your mobile phones.

It's a simple modification of the typical game. If you've already read the rules, you'll be able to adapt to this new style quite easily. If you haven't learned the basic rules yet, they're posted here: http://cruelgame.com/games/ Be sure to read them before you play! However, the rules in this email are equally important to understand. So keep reading! And please forward this email to other members of your team. And if you know anyone else who might want to play without the complications of mobile email, please forward this message. They can play whether they register online or not!

HOW TO PLAY LONDON CRUEL 2 B KIND without a mobile phone:

1) You will still show up in the game space anytime between 3:00 PM and 3:30 PM. Be stealthy! Act casual! You don't want to be discovered by other players!

The boundaries of the Soho game space are:

N of Shaftsbury Ave, S of Oxford St, E of Regents St and W of Charing Cross Road.

***You don't have to "check in" for the game. Just show up.

2) At 3:30 PM, you will start killing your targets with kindness. Remember: ANYONE in the game area could be your target. Other teams may consist of 1, 2, 3, or more players…

***You don't have to wait for any announcement that the game has started. When your watch says 3:30, start killing!

HOW TO KILL WITHOUT A MOBILE PHONE

This email contains THREE WEAPONS that you can use anytime during tomorrows' game. Your team can use any of these weapons at any time, and all of the other teams will be using the same three weapons. That means your team can also be killed by any of these weapons. Here are your three weapons:

WEAPON A Offer to help your targets. Be specific about what you're offering to help them with.

WEAPON B Point out something "strangely beautiful" to your targets.

WEAPON C Mistake your targets for celebrities.

***Remember, all members of your team must perform this attack simultaneously against all members of the opposing team.

It only takes one weapon to successfully assassinate another team. So if you catch a team off-guard and manage to attack them BEFORE they try to attack you, any weapon you choose will effectively kill them.

However, other teams will be trying to attack you! So how do you know who wins the attack if they are killing you with kidness at the same time?

***If both teams start attacking simultaneously, you will apply a rock-paper-scissors system to determine which weapon was effective.

HELP beats BEAUTIFUL.

BEAUTIFUL beats CELEBRITIES.

CELEBRITIES beats HELP.

SAME WEAPONS cancel each other out. You have 30 seconds to flee and cannot kill each other in this time. You can then stalk and attack again, or move on to a different target.

Write this on a scrap of paper or your hand before tomorrow's game so you don't forget which weapons outranks another!

Remember: After an attack, the two teams join forces. You are now a mob of assassins working together. For the rest of the game, ou must make your decisions and perform your attacks as a group.

HOW TO SCORE WITHOUT A MOBILE PHONE

Automatic scoring is the main thing we lose by playing without mobile phones. So you'll have to keep track of your own kill points. But we promise, it's easy.

***You earn 100 points for each attack you win.

That's it. When you are killed, you get to keep any points you earned before being killed. You can also keep earning points for future attacks that you win with your new alliance. That's right: even if you're dead, you get 100 points for each attack you win.

But points don't really matter. Yes, you want to have the highest score. But it's even better to be part of the alliance that makes the final kill! Even if you don't have the most points, you can still win the game by being part of the final successful alliance.

3) By 5 PM and not a minute later, you must arrive at the game debriefing zone, where the local game master will reveal himself. You will also find out if any teams are still alive, or if the group has successfully assassinated all of its own players!

The debriefing location is here:

The Two Floors at 3 Kingly Street, London, W1R 5LE. A Google map of the debriefing location is here: http://tinyurl.com/yklqc8

If you have any questions about how to play Cruel 2 B Kind just ask

Good luck tomorrow. Be cruel!

I need to set one of these up in Boston sometime. Cruel 2 B Kind on the Common would rock.
