if you can find the book on amazon.com and view the exerpt pages, the clues will make sense
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
in case you haven't already considered, the L and W are line and word - DEC will make sense once you see a page

The encoded puzzle clue, not the puzzle itself. I got that part.

encoded puzzle clue... there's no encoding
there are 5 and 3 clues, and 5 and 3 words to find.
There's nothing beyond the words

So, if you're ready, you can begin the fifth puzzle of Reindeer Games '06, with this clue:

flv rsvofz gy fhw imcu ajyzalfms jqmeucgy
key: merry christmas
Could you shed some light on that, please.

oh the password! I didn't think you were referring to that because you had the puzzle... and you know the book...

Plugs gave the info back here, but didn't say how to get the solution
so to fill that gap, it's a vigenere...

I tried The Vigenère cipher with every variation of the key I could imagine, but I always got gibberish. What am I missing?

hm. Well I use the Inforenz vigenere cracker, a nifty little program...
the key has no space, so it's just merrychristmas (14 length key)

Thanks. I finally found one online that decodes properly, too: http://makcoder.sourceforge.net/demo/vigenere.php

I am having a similar problem to plugs, and can't search the American Amazon as I am a UK customer, so any help would be appreciated.

Call a library

Amazon won't give all of it to me, and in any case Amazon wasn't showing me the correct pages when it did. Your best bet is to call a library. Got Skype or anything that lets you call out to USA numbers toll free? Call the Centerville Public Library in Centerville, Georgia at 478-987-3050. They have the book on the shelf, and the librarian was kind enough to read me the answers. They are open (all times are GMT-5 / Eastern):
Mon - Tues: 9am - 9pm
Wed - Sat: 9am - 6pm
Sunday: Closed
