Well, I checked out the thermalregulator site and, if you mouse over the heart, the sound file seems to have changed. I could discern a voice before but now it sounds like static with maaaaybe something muttered at very, VERY low volume. Can't hearit without fiddling with the levels. Definitely seems different from how it was before.

EDIT: nevermind, it's playing the voice again now :/ that was...odd.

just read through this entire thing... don't mean to jump in all willy nilly, but if I remember right, doesn't alfred's email have "mst3k" right in the name? Perhaps that mst3k episode holds more clues necessary for the search.

oops, I may be confusing that alfred with "Al the knife" from saammeeees, which I read the story through last night. My mistake - never mind.

FYI, the SPLAT is meant to dissuade spammers from farming forums for tasty e-mail addresses. Smile

For clarity reasons... Very Happy

The thermal regulator animation contains two separate audio files; the voice and the static. As such, you can have the voice play without the static. On a fresh reload, drop your mouse cursor into the animation from above that dude's head and go right to the heart. There should be no static. Wait a few seconds and the voice will play without the static. If you move your mouse away into, say, the thermal regulator picture, then the static will start.

My thought is that the static is there to make the audio easier to catch for passing visitors...

Also, lisak's site should catch any updates that the animation has.

Well done to boyblue for pointing it out, I could not believe it when my page actually loaded. I am now going to go bang my head against several bricks.

We DIDN'T. I'm sure that login has been tried at least dozens of times (and it's on that list of logins in the spreadsheet too), but if the PMs kept a log of attempts, they could probably tell us a more accurate number, which I'm sure is probably closer to "hundreds" in actuality.

I don't want to be rude, so I'll just shut up and leave off with a slight huff and a Flaming Nutter

Minute decimation

Now that the fourth login has fallen, and we've had a look at what's inside, we get to see a pair of geographic coordinates again that we've seen before (although I think the point of the login puzzle was probably to give us access to this image, as opposed to simply finding the directory it was housed in, and getting the reward without doing the work):

The coordinate pair is 37d46-N 122d26-W. Previously, this was read by some as 37.46N 122.26W, leading to Upper Emerald Lake (Google Map).

However, I'm almost positive this is wrong. If you write the coordinates as they have been written, the value after the d refers to minutes of latitude or longitude, and not decimal degrees. Reporting geographic coordinates in degrees-minutes-seconds used to be standard practice, but now that GPS is around, you more often see decimal degrees, and people don't necessarily understand the difference readily.

37d46-N = 37 degrees 46 minutes N = 37 46/60 degrees N ~ 37.77N
122d26-W = 122 degrees 26 minutes W = 122 26/60 degrees W ~ 122.43W

Plug this into Google Maps, and you find the intersection of Noe and Henry Streets (Google Map), in San Francisco, just as Yanka rightly wrote above. However, to really specify an intersection accurately, you'd probably need to specify seconds as well, so either this intersection was selected because it lands nicely on round numbers of minutes of latitude and longitude, or the position simply is referring to that general area to the east of Golden Gate Park and to the west of downtown SF.

d'oh!

Well, I am really glad they finally fixed the login, but yeah, I kinda wish they had checked their logs to see what people were trying ...

Heh. Onward! Very Happy
