Are we unplugged/running the Matrix on our home computers?

I posted this in another (now locked) thread, where I think it was overlooked by everyone.

Ok, I'm gonna go out on a limb here. The only contact we've had from Metacortechs was email that included a line about making sure we get the screensaver. I found that significant. I'm thinking the screensaver might be a plot point.

For anyone who's familiar with distributed computing, you'll know exactly what I mean. It's used frequently for things like the SETI project, where an extraordinary amount of processing power is needed. That would certainly be the case trying to host a Matrix. (Yes, I know about the human battery thing from the movie, but if an alternative to that were necessary, this makes sense.) Bear in mind that I'm not saying there's an ap actually hidden in the screensaver, just spec'ing about a possible plot tie-in between the screensaver and the Metacortechs storyline.

I'm reposting it in its own thread now because of the email from Beth to Phil, which is in Phil's Metadex. It's the transcript of the conversation Beth had with the AI Man.

Quote:
Oh, wait, I know. You need computing power.

You need lots of computing power.

I just might be able to help you there, my friend.

For those unfamiliar with distributed computing, here's a definition which I got from this site http://www.aspenleaf.com/distributed/

Distributed computing is a science which solves a large problem by giving small parts of the problem to many computers to solve and then combining the solutions for the parts into a solution for the problem. Recent distributed computing projects have been designed to use the computers of hundreds of thousands of volunteers all over the world, via the Internet, to look for extra-terrestrial radio signals, to look for prime numbers so large that they have more than ten million digits, and to find more effective drugs to fight the AIDS virus. These projects are so large, and require so much computing power to solve, that they would be impossible for any one computer or person to solve in a reasonable amount of time.

I think we pretty much agree that the AI Man is in the Matrix. If just fixing his errors requires Metacortechs' computer network, imagine what kind of power must be necessary to run the entire Matrix?

Wouldn't it be ironic if we were actually helping to run the Matrix with our own home computers?

While this is possible from a plot point of view, it is not the case from a technical one. The screensaver takes minimal processing power, and when I attempted to log network traffic with it, I didn't get anything. So I doubt that this is the case. That isn't to say that it won't activate at some future date. Twisted Evil
