Who is Loki ?

How I love Norse mythology!

Loki is the mythical being of mischief, son of the giants Fárbauti and Laufey, and foster-brother of King (God) Odin.

In many ways a negative figure, very deceptive, keen, very arrogant. He is capable of shape-shifting, and is often represented by a flame.

We're not positive either. People who claim to have decompiled the flash on the site claim it directs back to 42Entertainment. We know that 42 is working on something for early 2007 (various spec & interviews).

Welcome theGambler. Cool If you register your nick and log in when you visit uF, you can do a lot more in the forums (ie. edit your posts, mark topics for notification, add a cute little avatar by your nick, etc) Laughing

I thought perhaps it was a sudoku, as others have pointed out in the irc channel (#vanishing on chat-solutions). However there are more than 9 letters and it's a 9x9 grid and therefore it can't be a sudoku.

So now I'm working off of the angle that each letter-square has a jigsaw piece look to it. I'm making a list of like shapes and which letters go with them. I've got 20 difference pieces so far and only about half the board covered. SuperguyA1 and I were discussing that perhaps the pieces can be rearranged.

The Story So Far

Just a quick recap, because we're on page 2 and things are all over the place.

The folks over at neowin.net were quick to notice a mysterios image on the right side of the IE Development blog.

The image shows a grid and links to the site vanishingpointgame.com. The site contains a login flash file which asks for a key. It is said the flash links to parts hosted by 42 entertainment. We have not verified this, but there are a couple of hints that it is legit. The site also contains a timer counting down to 6:30PM on Jan 8th 2007. The decompiled flash leads us to Bellagio Fountains on that date.

Checking the source code reveals some obfuscated code, and the comment: PIN=5813

A while after the above discovery, someone called "lokivanishes" posted a new hint in the neowin thread. The new image used in conjunction with the previous image revealed our first "key".

The highlighted characters are: ej-od;-lo
Shifted to the left on a keyboard as per the hint gives us: wh0isl0ki

By entering the key "wh0isl0ki" in the key field, we get a new puzzle, a grid of characters with some numbers on the bottom right.

I assume the subsequent solves will also need to be entered on the main page, giving us something to do in what seems to be a pregame until Jan 8th. I also expect more random tidbits and clues on other sites, as we have two random internet posts right now.

That is all for now.

strifey found this: http://halowars.heavengames.com/key

Quote:
12/23/2006: Earlier today I received a package from Microsoft containing a puzzle box, which after figuring out the puzzle and opening it, contained a small 256MB USB Key. The Key contained a video, a letter, and a cipher key, which I have attached below ... the key seems to be related to the image on the Internet Explorer blog. Anyone figure it out?

key2
To decrypt, perform Rot -1 on the letters and -1 on the numbers. Then shift one key left.

12/23/2006 Update: leejeffrey from the thread at neowin figured it out:

shift one key left means the same as it did earlier, press the key to the left of it on your keyboard

comes out as iw4nttwinyou which you enter in the front page (with the countdown) and get the following message:

Quote:
Check your sources to find

THe STaNDaRD

800-736-9085

-Zen

Calling the number you are prompted to enter your pin, and remember to check the source <PIN> but at this moment that is not working.

I tried phoning on Skype, and mashed keys because the PIN didn't work, and she said "Incorrect extension" or something.

Hey Cliff, if you're reading Smile

SPEC

I think that folks registered for CES are getting packages in the mail ("Post") from MS that will lead them to the webpage. Based on the posting at the halowars website, and the post in neowin where that keyboard was given to allow them the first solve:

Well, I don't normally do this, but since you guys were first on the scene, here's a cypher key for you. Impressive job!
More to come....but not delivered like this. Keep your eyes on the Post.
Good luck!

Anyone in uF going to CES?????

[HINT]I live in Las Vegas, but no tickets to CES, so I guess I'm not getting an MS package.....but you think if there is an ARG from 42, then one (or two) uF folks would get a little clue.....afterall, weren't there honeybottles sent out (to folks who don't play Halo)?[/HINT]

Edit to add:
neowin posted another key 3scap3grav1ty (but not really sure how it was figured out).

VPgrid2
Edit to add: this is a picross puzzle: http://www.millstone.demon.co.uk/games/picross/start.htm

Edit to add:
New discovery at neowin, the PIN = 35813. The message says "good job, now go to the antipenultimate directory".

UPDATE

I can't screen cap but the wh0isl0ki puzzle grid is completely different now! And a different number on the bottom.

Can someone else grab it and post?

Even though it had two errors, I managed to solve the Picross puzzle. When you follow the "path" from the right border to the top one, you get this quote:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
it was cearly over his head the monk who screwed up the transliteration samt ar-ras

Googling samt ar_ras leads to a few interesting pieces of information.

Quote:
zenith
1387, from O.Fr. cenith (Fr. zénith), from M.L. cenit, senit, bungled scribal transliteration of Arabic samt "road, path," abbreviation of samt ar-ras, lit. "the way over the head." Letter -m- misread as -ni-. The M.L. word may as well be influenced by the rough agreement of the Arabic term with classical L. semita "sidetrack, side path" (notion of "thing going off to the side"), from se- "apart" + *mi-ta-, suffixed zero-grade form of PIE base *mei- "to change" (see mutable).

Quote:
samt ar-ras = [Arab] the way of the head

The zenith is the point in the sky that is straight above your head. The altitude of the zenith is 90°. The opposite point is the nadir, and the horizon is midway between the two.

The vanishing point is the boundary between Something and Everything; between What Is and What Can Be. Fewer than a thousand people have ever been there to see the ultimate vista. The grand prize winner will be one of them.

The race for that destiny will begin when the countdown hits zero.

That sounds promising... I wonder where, exactly, they mean?
