additional note on password

Listed in the http://www.i2n.org/stuff/Image(566).txt is the link to a personal directory for Ed.

Mentioned in the Alex's note to us is the need for Ed's password, which is conveniently listed in a text file

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
vawhawbr

Someone has already left that as the comment on Alex's blog.
<snip>

This password is encoded, see below solve:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
ROT-13 vawhawbr to yield INJUNJOE.

Refer to Wikipedia for the connection between this and Oppenheimer.

I'd just hate for someone to use the wrong password Smile

10PM - 11PM GMT 2007-01-09
9PM - 10PM GMT 2007-01-10

I wanna wait because i wanna finaly do something important in this and I cant do it till then!! And besides, the longer we wait, the more info we can gather, the better shot of a successful "attack" we have...also, MERRY CHRISTMAS!! and if you aren't Christan, whoops.

Ok so it seems nothing was done on the tuesday, which leaves the 9th and 10th to choose. We should probably set this is concrete, so we don't stuff it up. I am available for either and will gladly get up at the ungodly time of 7am to do it (thats what time it will be here Razz). The tenth was mentioned earlier, however that only gives us one opportunity to do it. If we try on the 9th, at least we don't have that pressure on us if something goes wrong. Ideas/suggestions?

I was looking at this today. Have we no takers? It might be an image file, either 8-bit grayscale, or RGB values (with an extra bit at the end). Should it be kept in those 16 columns, or could the rows be wrapped around from a more horizontal layout? I dunno. It's a pain to work with that much data by hand, and I just don't have the tools to try a lot of combinations of theories.

Having 16x2048 bytes means it's most likely a visual solution. Definitely the data is "flat", in that all possible hex bytes from 00 thru ff are used, and all occur at about the same rate from 95-150 times.

Where are we now? What are our tasks?
a recap of where the story stands

(Answers which are hidden in spoiler tags in preceding posts are being shown below without SPOILER tags so be forewarned.)

To be honest, I wasn't following in-story how or why we got this file, so i was looking at is as a stand-alone puzzle. However, within context it appears that we are not supposed to read* it, but use it to break into The Village!
Quote:
To knock out the security net, we need to run analyses on all of the research cluster nodes at the same time... You'll need an actual experiment results file from lab4 research to run the analyses.

That file is our results file that five of us need to run thru an analysis job at the same time, when Randall isn't around to stop it. To recap, there are instructions on http://www.i2n.org/stuff/Image(566).txt

It tells us what to do, some of which we have accomplished (and I am NOT putting spoiler tags around this, so we can concentrate on what remains to be done):

- Decode Ed's memos
The memo directory holds clues in http://www.feelbelieve.com/~ed/memo/
- get the password
stored as vawhawbr which is ROT-13 for INJUNJOE
(this is the password to access the nodes)
- and the cluster node names
This memo was a poem which led to 5 historical figures, which fit into the node naming scheme:
http://oppenheimer.backdoor.feelbelieve.com/
http://allison.backdoor.feelbelieve.com/
http://feynman.backdoor.feelbelieve.com/
http://bainbridge.backdoor.feelbelieve.com/
http://farrell.backdoor.feelbelieve.com/
Currently, the connections are refused, because "Miriam can only keep the cluster backdoors open for about thirty minutes at a time without things resetting."

- Choose a time for the attack when Randall is not around.
Our choices now are either
10PM - 11PM GMT 2007-01-09 (a Tuesday) or
9PM - 10PM GMT 2007-01-10 (a Wednesday)
Both of those slots are early afternoon for me in PST, and I'll be at work.

- Get a team together, at least five people.
The instructions specify that "Any one person can only run an analysis on one cluster node at a time." -- if we're all logging in with Ed's password, it must be checking IP addresses, or it's something Miriam sets up for us.

- Let Alex know. Leave a message on his blog. Leave only the date.
- Let Miriam, Sally and Jan know through the same method.
We cannot do this until we agree on a rendezvous date (and Alex will know the time based on the date).

The plan is: "Network traffic goes up, security [camera] comes down. [Then Alex] will be outside waiting with the bolt-cutters to break into the lab and get the guys to safety" -- is everybody in?

Do we know what to expect when the backdoors open? Will we each need a local copy of that results file, or just the URL handy? I hope it is obvious how to run the file thru the analysis...

*(but it would be a sweet easter egg if that results file is really an encoded image or audio file -- they had to generate the hex code from somewhere, and it would be a shame to just use random values)

Argh, I give up >_<

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Decoded the message with some guesswork, pass was "wowjimn"

"mim - this is alex. safe here. need all the info you have on r&d cluster. remember the back door we used to use to piss of randall? i need it back up. miss you. alex"

That was a puzzle solve I hope =P

How'd you manage to decode the pass? I want to be able to do that! Surprised

It was a Vigenere cipher keyword emersons

I'm available to help attack, on either date. How shall we co-ordinate?
