 Greetings from Neowin

Hi there, it's Rob here from Neowin. I'm leading Neowin's efforts in the Vanishing Point game.

I'd like to just thank everyone here at unFiction - working together, we've been THE community effort behind this puzzle, and it's been a great pleasure.

I look forward to the continuing cooperation and mutual sharing that has characterised our relationship so far.

Regards,

Rob

Microsoft Sent A Free Laptop With Windows Vista

Yup, Laughing Squid got an Acer Ferrari laptop loaded with MS Vista Ultimate (and the Loki letter was inside).

This appears to cinch the relationship between Vanishingpointgame, MS, and Vista.

konashark bought that laptop last year for Christmas. He loves it (makes this cool Ferrari engine sound when you turn it on).

Mitch Denny has a key. Probably new. http://notgartner.wordpress.com/2006/12/27...0-the-unboxing/

According to Mitch's blog:
Quote:
Inside the cardboard box was a wooden trick box which took me a few moments to open up. Inside was another copy of the letter and a USB memory stick and on the stick were three files:

Cipher Key 4.jpg
from_Loki.txt
Loki.wmv
I have uploaded the video to Soapbox on MSN Video under the tag of "vanishing point". I am uploading from an ISDN connection so progress is slow. Anyway - I am off to find fellow decoders and crack some of the puzzles!

Since soapbox is by invitation only & sadly, I have not been invited, does anyone here have access to see if this is something different than what we have already seen?

UPDATES

myvanishingpoint.com Whois info is now anonymous.

High Res version of video posted on neowin from another laptop recipient (creamhackered).

Recipients of the laptops (and puzzle boxes) seem to be bloggers who cover topics of interest to Microsoft's target audience for Vista. So of course this will create a bit of a backlash (against the whole "bloggers selling their souls to advertise" and jealousy amongst said bloggers).
Quote:
Recipients include Brandon LeBlanc, Scott Beale, Barb Bowman, Mauricio Freitas, Mitch Denny, Zen.Heavengames and Long Zheng.

There are probably others out there who are not going to brag about getting a free laptop...and some may be the type who see the Loki letter and go "huh?" and discard it.

I have no idea what that site is going on about. I see absolutely no problem with sending anything to bloggers WITHOUT attachments. They were not forced to write about the gift or even be positive. If someone wants to smash the laptop or stick anti-Micro$oft sticker on it they are free to do so.

I think all of Warne's and Pospisil's points are moot. This is not the place to debate the ins and outs of it, but I'd like to say that in general free stuff is good--as long as it is absolutely free without forced commitments and directions. Let them give out laptops or ipods or whatevers they want. Let them even pay people in cash. As long as it's being done in a transparent and ethical way, what's the problem?

Of course if anyone wants to further discuss this issue please start a meta thread. That said, where my free laptop? Cool

I've been wondering.......how often do you reckon the people behind this check up on us?
They obviously read our forums and are up to date with how much we know...they could be watching us right this very moment too.

I'm just imagining a crazed maniacle Loki sat on a chair with her laptop, like god enjoying playing with us.

Makes me wonder exactly what information she has. Could there even be a copy on there of everyone to date who's posting or showing an interest?

Meh probably just me getting tired but i'd really like to see things from the 'master' point of view. Must be quite fun. Laughing

If the PM's (Puppet Masters) are from 42 as suggested, you can bet they are watching us. Less maniacal, and more paying attention to keep things moving smoothly. If the PM's are not 42, then they are probably paying attention anyway, as evidenced by responses with clues, etc.

I doubt there is a master list of people who have posted--but they will remember names of people who are active over a stretch of time. It may not have any effect at all on the game, but there are people running the show.

I'm not sure if I hadn't had enough coffee this morning yet, but I don't get this argument:

First, as Warne points out, it's unheard of for a software company to give away notebooks.

The strategy is problematic because it's unheard of?

I have to disagree. I've been to quite a few AMD, Intel & Microsoft trainings & events (in Houston) and they frequently give away notebooks, upgrades, free versions of newly released (or about to be released) software, CPU chips, video & sound cards, wireless accesories, etc, etc.

Maybe this is the first time they have used this particular marketing ploy (i.e. a game openly announced on the web) but it is far from the first time that these type of items were given away.

Personally, I think it's brilliant. People in the online gaming communities are known to have better quality systems (and better functioning software and operating systems). What a great way to get the people who really know their stuff to "come back" to Microsoft & it's affiliates products.

An when you think about it, this community is putting in alot of effort with the entire Vanishing Point thing, we are all working hard on this so some of us are entitled to a little reward...well not little but you get what i mean heh.

I personally just hope there are little gifts waiting for us at those selected locations cause i wont be a happy bunny if i travel all the way to london for nothing ^_^
