On one hand, I really want another LoB update.

On the other hand, I feel like we're letting mind candy down. : (

I hear ya ation...

as a philosophy student, i've been trying to get into the head of the cube, it just isn't working out for me. The cube has a purpose... the end of its journey is being found by one of us who can put all of the pieces together...

not just pathways, but the risk pieces, the weird blobs, and the coded library messages. As for a final location... I'd say its buried in a library... how we get to a final location from these hints is a mystery to me...

back to the cards.

Pretty sure somebody would've realized this by now, but the text is most likely irrelevant regarding the location of the Cube.

According to Podcast #9 on the official site, the Cube is used for instantaneous matter transportation, which fits in with the text here, being "the thing itself". A maker of journeys, a joiner of points- makes sense to me at least.

But the second line, the whole thing being about a journey- maybe referring to the motive of the theft? IF Combed Thunderclap is the person who stole the Cube, perhaps he wanted it to travel to Earth, or travel around Earth.

I'm lost in the whole codes, streets and Risk discussion, so figured I'd just put this out there.

this comes from the MindCandy Newsletter sent out this last week.

"
While the communications lockdown continues, there has clearly been some
movement in the shadows of Perplex City. For a start, it looks like the
vitriolic Kate Brewster has been fired by The Sentinel. But more importantly,
'Combed Thunderclap' has continued to update the Library of Babel website with
some very direct clues regarding the Cube's location... well, as direct as
anything seen so far:

http://thelibraryofbabel.com

But how do the clues tie into the cards? Will Earth's Cube Hunters manage to
solve them? And can anyone dig up the Cube before the Third Power reach it...?
Only time will tell!"

MindCandy has told, and IS telling us that we have everything we need to find the cube, and that these are DIRECT CLUES... well basically.

How do we match up Pathways with something in the real world?

I thought of matching up intersections that have the same result that the numberstrings give, but there are an impossibly small amount of places where that could be the case on earth. in fact probably only one or two possibilities... problem is, where do we start from. We started from Key square on the map, the starting place is the key. We need to start somewhere else, and maybe the key will show us what to do?

ramble ramble ramble.

I have been somewhat less than attentive over the last couple of months, but was reading through trying to catch up a bit.

Trying to place this into the real world, I wondered if there were any real-life Key Squares anywhere that could be used to push this further. Google so far hasn't turned one up. However (and I have no idea if this is any use whatsoever) a noticable proportion of the results, when Perplex City is removed, are either about chess or Playfair ciphers. It's probably just coincidence, or me noticing things that aren't at all relevant, but I thought I'd mention it in case someone can work either of those things into the mix.

I'll go back to quietly lurking and not paying attention now.

actually what might be useful would be if Daffy were to map out the pathways on the city map. Other stuff has been charted out in the past, so I know it can be done, but I don't know how difficult it is at all.

Mind you, I *say* "useful". In reality, perhaps not so useful afterall, since we now have a string of text, and possibly should be concentrating our efforts on making sense of that. But I dont have anything useful to contribute there either, so ignore me.

I had actually been thinking of doing this, but as you said I didn't know how useful it would be. In any case, I don't have anything useful to contribute either, so I went ahead and did it:

Pathways on the city map

I colour-coded the paths to show which corner they originated from, but it's still quite confusing to follow with all of them overlapping.

thanks for that daffy!

ok, i'm going to side track everyone for a sec..... Five fingers, ok, reads as:
"Five fingers point:
half the world
realm
region
feature
last mystery" right??!!

why not read it as:
"Five fingers point half the:
world
realm
region
feature
last mystery"?????? wouldn't that be more descriptive?

The best solution (amongst others) from our pathways text string I have come up with is:

AIKO TOOK ME

NY PUB LIB

ARTPAD

PULL SHELF

DIG

FIND MC

but this bares no connection to our main clue:

Five fingers point:
half the world
realm
region
feature
last mystery.

I'm trying to see things in a more simpler form as MC have given us 'direct' clues as they say.

Jeez...I don't know what to think. If this is right though... Question

PS If true, what to make of Artpad?

I have no idea if this is relevant but the NY PUblic Library has a famous section on Art, Prints and Photographs at the 5th Ave research library.

Here is a link to the floor plan of the library.

Here is a link to some of the information about art and architecture: click here

There is more information about art at the NY Public Library as well, but I have no idea if this helps.

Please don't get too excited about this, as it is a naive and simplistic way to look at the info we have. It is totally speculative and may be way off the mark. As for Artpad I know there is an Art wall featuring artists (Is there a room 333?!)- make of it what you will. Any other ideas should be considered.

Just been looking at the NYPL digital galleries followng Rose's links above. Typed 'babel' into the search box and came up with some interesting stuff. See pic below. To me the bottom two pictures show key square (left) and Ascendency point (right); both pictures are based upon a grid and with a river running through. Still looking.

Sorry if it's covered elsewhere, but would love to know how you got that message (it's late, forgive me if it's obvious). Googled new york public library and artpad and got this site, which mentions that Michael Borges is the Director of the New York Library Association.

EDIT: so my mind does work better after 6 hours sleep, than when I've been up for 20. Now I get it. I'll ask a friend with friends in Manhatten if any of them like wild goose chases in public spaces.
