[SPEC] Wizard of Oz's symbolism

It's been mentioned in the trailhead at least once, but I think there may be some clues or symbolism within the Wizard of Oz references on Eva's blog.

"It's always best to start at the beginning and all you do is follow the Yellow Brick Road."
-I think this is just a reference to anyone who gets to the blog without following the path and other puzzles stemming from enter-geist.com

"Gosh, it would be awful pleasin' To reason out the reason For things I can't explain. Then perhaps I'll deserve you, And be even worthy erv you If I only had a brain."
-The things that can't be explained could be a reference to Melvin Geist being abducted and given powers. The second part makes me think of the relationship between Eva and Erwin. Perhaps Erwin ran off to find a means to become smarter?

Thirdly the background image at the top:
-The red shoes are heavily symbolic of wanting to go home. I'm also beginning to think maybe Eva was abducted. If she was, the red shoes could represent her wanting to escape, the green hands of the witch might represent an alien. I think the cowardly lion and scarecrow are possibly aspects of Erwin. The scarecrow referencing to the earlier speculation and the lion simply because it's a feline.

Given, this is all a lot of speculation, I was just curious on other peoples' thoughts on it.

Another thing I just thought of is maybe the Wizard is a metaphor for the aliens doing the experimentation on Melvin and possibly others. Instead of giving out courage, hearts and brains, maybe they're giving out supernatural abilities.

I think that's all really interesting. I'm not sure about Eva being abducted (the news article said that there was no far-out extreme sci-fi), but I think it's a possibility. Also, Melvin (or whoever) having some supernatural powers (like the Wizard example) is within the realm of possibility.

Maybe somebody should email Eva asking her about why she likes Wizard of Oz--we might be able to confirm or deny some of your thoughts, WSC.

I e-mailed her once asking if she noticed Erwin acting unusually before his disappearance, but I haven't received a response from her. I think I'll try your suggestion and send another one solely asking her about the Wizard of Oz and not Erwin.

There's an exhibition in Bristol called "Alice through the Looking Glass"

See http://www.at-bristol.org.uk/explore/Alice.htm

Just a coincidence? Maybe one of our friends from Bristol wants to have a look at it.

Hi, I just happened to notice that the citation from Scarcrow's song at the top of the blog exactly matches with the moviescript (http://www.un-official.com/The_Daily_Script/ms_wizoz.htm).
From Wikipedia it can be learnt that this part of the song was skipped from the movie (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/If_I_Only_Had_A_Brain.
Further, it is mentioned that:
Quote:
The sequence was eventually used as a segment in the 1985 film That's Dancing!.

Consideration was given to restoring it for the film's 1998 reissue, but Warner Bros. changed their minds, in the interest of not tampering with the classic film. However, it is included in the DVD extras.

This song was also covered by alternative rock band The Flaming Lips for the soundtrack to the video game Stubbs the Zombie

I don't know if this is of any significance, but it seemd worth mentioning here

Alice Through the Looking Glass doesn't really have anything to do with the Wizard of Oz...

Though Alice in Wonderland does feature Alice disappearing down a rabbit hole but I think that it's probably not related.

Eva got back to me and here it is:
Quote:

Hi Lucas

I love the Wizard of Oz movie. I really feel like Dorothy sometimes - don't you? It's funny how one thing leads to another like that. Until last weekend I'd never done a video blog - first I fall down some steps doing my foot in and wake up in another place (ie my bed), then suddenly I'm making all these new friends on the net. It feels like I'm setting off on some epic journey, don't know where yet.
At the moment I feel like I'm just being carried along by it all, kind of powerless.

be seeing you

Eva

I was curious as to why you have so many Wizard of Oz references on your blog. Are you just a fan or do the words and images represent how you're feeling? Sincerely,

Lucas Maxwell

Yeah, you're right. I mixed it up. Of course this would rather be an "Alice in the wonderland" reference. Don't know, whether it is related. However, we've got a new thread about it..

So I decided to watch Wizard of Oz again. Interesting if you consider whats happened so far.

Dorothy doesn't live with her parents, she lives with her aunt and uncle. Eva's parents both passed on IIRC.

Dorothy's journey began when she lost Toto for a moment, taken by the lady down the street. She was pretty upset, but he came back on his own. Eva is missing her cat.

Now Dorothy decides to leave home, but gets turned back by Professor Marvel. Eva has Proffesor Wilson looking after her.

Dorothy's memory in Oz seems a little fuzzy (can't remeber the faces of her friends the farm hands) Eva can't remeber who bandaged her foot - that one is a bit of a stretch though.

Thats about all I can think of right now... except maybe 'needing a brain' to figure out that Keir Jones puzzle. Wink

good observation

RC54, good observation there. I like how you put that together. So is it safe to say maybe Saturday when Eva made her first video blog that she wasn't in Kansas anymore.

oz spec

hey all, have been lurking for a few days following the threads - not sure how useful/relevant this is but something occurred to me...

The main "message" in WoOZ is that whatever it is that you seek (brain, heart, nerve w/e) you already possess. In fact to quote Dorothy:

Quote:
Dorthoy (Judy Garland): If I ever go looking for my heart's desire again, I won't look any further than my own back yard, because if it isn't there, I never really lost it to begin with.

Just a thought...

Also: It seems that it should somehow be significant that the quote from the scarecrow's song on Eva's blog never actually made it into the final film... but I can't think why Razz

kk thats it for now, will keep turning it over in my head...

From what I can remember about Alice Through the Looking Glass, it was almost about two worlds....hmm sort of like an ARG. There's real world and ARG world. Oh and what about Eva drinking and eating the Youshi products. Hmm what about Alice eating and drinking the food... I'm wondering if it'll cause something bad to happen to Eva.

I'm also wondering with the clicking her heels and getting out of there. Is she maybe being held prisoner.

Parallels mostly being about appearence versus reality....a very ARGish thought. Maybe Eva hit her head as well....we don't know the details of her accident.
