So to landmark those places:

Miami, FL
South Beach (Lummus Park?)

Phoenix, AZ
Margaret T Hance Park (by the Library?)

Austin, TX
Barton Square Mall (In the middle of a large car-park...sorry...I suspect your view won't be as nice as the others)

Sydney Australia
Manly Beach (North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club, Cheers Puzzled Pineapple)

Los Angeles, CA
Pan Pacific Regional park

London, England
Trafalgar Square, nicely positioned between the two fountains (they have comfy phone boxes Wink )

Berlin, Germany
In front of the Brandenburg Gate

Singapore
Victoria Theatre and Concert Hall, looks like the grounds

Toronto, Canada
Hummingbird Centre to the SE (where a performance of Rain - The Beatles Experience will be happening on the evening of the event) and BCE Place to the NW (thanks xnbomb Wink )

San Francisco, CA
Palace of Fine Arts (watch out for helicopters)

Seattle, WA
Gas Works Park

The building at Manly is the North Steyne Surf Life Saving Club (corroborating evidence other than google earth's suggestions: picture here down a bit). There's also a webcam noted on google earth so if the event is at sea, we might be able to see it online.

As for Trafalgar Square, all I can say is: CONGA!

So, for the London event, are we all just going to congregate at Trafalgar Square? Or is anyone meeting up beforehand?

Actually, that'd be the BCE place and the Hockey Hall of Fame to the NW Smile

EDIT: Google Maps link showing the place

This site is handy for getting to places in London if you're not local. Hell, even if you ARE local -

http://journeyplanner.tfl.gov.uk/

I hope they repeat it like the Vegas one, coz I think I'm going to be 10 minutes late according to journeyplanner. Sad

Elemental

Can't believe I'm the first person to suggest this, but the search didn't come up with anything for the word 'element' so here goes.

four boxes, four elements.

bellegio - fountain - water

sydney, miami etc. - sky writing - air

London, Berlin etc. - unknown - earth

Seattle GAS WORKS - unknown - fire

The last two are obviously speculatory, but with a gas works as the final place I reckon it would have to be that way round.

This was gnawed over heavily in irc on Saturday, but you're right nobody posted it here. I forget who brought it up - was it jontc? Obviously great minds think alike...

And here's a different and equally interesting thought about four possible themes for the four weeks of puzzles, based on Loki's four majors (posted by aspect9):

http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?p=293053#293053

Which one? Both? More?

Interesting theory. The Gasworks are defunct, however, so they'd have to bring their own apparatus. Not entirely out of the realm of possibility, though.

edit - fixed the quote/text separation - aliendial

Ok, open for new theories here... I did a little looking to try to find out what is on the corner of Front & Yonge in Toronto...

Given the location here (or see attachment), what is the arrow pointing to?

This image...

...seems to indicate that the coordinates are pointing directly to the digital signage block outside the Hummingbird Centre. Given that the event takes place at 7pm ET, it'll be very dark, and clues on the signage would make perfect sense.

How might that parallel with the other locations on Saturday? Is there a possible parallel, a theme?

Oh, and for anyone planning to be at the Toronto countdown location, we've got a meeting point at the Harvey's in Union Station (65 Front St. W - about 2 blocks to the left as on the attached map) around supper... I'll probably be there around 5pm or so. Look for a laptop and a grey toque Wink

Sounds like excellent spec, thebruce. Just checking one thing - that's your arrow, right? Not something from Loki?

And if you are right, seems like NYC wuz robbed - they have those giant screens on Times Square that would have been absolutely perfect for something like this! Altho probably much more expensive to rent than Hummingbird Center. Very Happy
