So the question becomes, how to get from either airport to the headquarters hotel(s)?

Well checking the BART site, the fee to any of the 4 stops on Market St (closest stops to the hotel) from SFO is $5.15 (one way). From the Colliseum/Oakland Airport (looks like a short shuttle to get to the bart from the airport) to Market St. is about $3.35.

Seems like a cab is the recommended means from Market St. to the hotel... no idea the price of that Smile

From SFO I would recommend either BART or a shuttle (cabs can get pretty expensive since the traffic into the city is generally pretty bad). If you're taking BART the signage is pretty good so you shouldn't have a problem finding it. It's a direct line into the city so just hop on an outbound and relax. Once you get into the city you can either get off at the Montgomery station and about a block away there's a bus you can catch that goes through North Beach and will take you all the way to the wharf. You can also go one stop further down to the Embarcadero stop and catch the F trolley which terminates at the wharf as well. Or you could just grab a cab once you get into the city which wouldn't be too expensive.

If you're taking a shuttle there are signs from the baggage claim that will lead you to where they are stationed (I recommend super shuttle). They have people that find out where you're going, and once they have enough people going to the same location/route they load up a van and go.

From Oakland you can either take a the shuttle that runs to the BART station and ride and use either of the public/cab options. From the Oakland station all of the inbound trains go through the city so you can take whatever shows up first. If you're taking a shuttle you can make an on-line reservation ahead of time using the like I posted previously. When you get to the airport you just call them up and let them know you're there and they dispatch a ride. I've never used it so I'm not sure how long it takes for them to show up.

I can go into more excruciating detail if you'd like, but I feel like I've already bombarded y'all enough. Good lord I'm long winded:)

And now the ARGFest T-shirt contest.

Your mission: to design a T-shirt for ARGFest San Francisco that uses SpaceBass's Sphere of Chaotic Fiction as a design element.

This image is a basic idea but feel free to tweek it to make it shinier or work better on your shirt.

I guess I'm 'bumping' this part of the thread. See below for my (first) entry. Is anyone else working on something? ...10 days to go until entries close...

Hi Boozemonkey. You gave good information, except just one thing. There are Fremont to Richmond trains that go through the Coliseum/Oakland Airport BART station, which do NOT go through the city. People need to board a train with a Daly City or SFO/Millbrae destination (they usually say San Francisco/Daly City if memory serves me). In any event, destination signs are there--just don't hop on the Richmond-bound train, unless you want to transfer, and who wants to do that?

I recommend getting off at the Powell Street BART station because you can buy a Passport or CityPass at the Visitor Information Center there. If you fly in to SFO, you can also buy them at the information booths in the baggage claim areas.

As far as getting from there to the official hotel in the (barf) Wharf (yes, I am editorializing), you can take a cable car (Powell-Hyde or Powell-Mason--the turnaround is just up the stairs from the Visitor Center), streetcar (F Line--catch it on Market St.), or bus (30 Stockton--catch it on Stockton (amazing!), one block east of Powell St.). The bus goes directly past the Holiday Inn at Columbus and North Point. If you have a lot of luggage, BART is fine, but Muni would be a hassle (especially a cable car). If you choose to not get a Muni pass of some sort, the cost is $5.00 to ride the cable car and $1.50 to ride the bus or streetcar.

As thebruce said, BART from SFO costs $5.15 and from Oakland, $3.35, but you must add the cost ($2.00) of the Shuttle from the Oakland Airport to the BART station, for a lovely total of $5.35.

I know that airfares to Oakland can sometimes be cheaper, but the Shuttle to BART is much more of a hassle than if you fly into SFO, where there is a BART station right at the airport.

Boozemonkey ain't got nuthin' on me when it comes to long-windednessesssessessess. Very Happy

If anyone has any specific questions about anything, you can PM me and I can bore you in a private missive, with a possible answer, which will carry no guarantee of accuracy. Or you can ask in here, publicly, to shame and humiliate me in front of my peers when I burst out crying due to my lack of sufficient knowledge.

I <3 your long wind!

So now, what method of transit would be best for us all to use during argfest, getting around the city? Are we buying muni passes? CityPasses (which adds a whole lot we'll likely never do that weekend)? Or are we just going with the cost of buses on the fly?

You can also buy a Muni pass other places, like a couple blocks from the hotelz (at least I think Bay and Taylor is right there): http://www.sfmuni.com/php/farevend.php?zip=94133&prod=3-Day

I would probably wait to get one, once you figure out what you and everybody else wants to do, and depending on how long you are going to be in the city. You may not need a lot of bus action. I personally have a bad habit of walking from downtown BART to Fisherman's Wharf and back, although that will occupy a lot of time, since it means Chinatown, North Beach, and Union Square Smile .

When flying, I also like taking the door-to-door airport shuttles, like the Supershuttle Boozemonkey mentioned. The one I've used most is Bayporter Express. Of course, this is also because I live in the boonies and usually am travelling with unwieldy masses of luggage.

Longwindedness rules.

Cool! Bay & Taylor is only a couple of blocks from the Holiday Inn.

I recommend the 1-day or 3-day Passport mainly if you want to ride the cable car as well as taking a few rides on streetcars and/or buses. It is about a mile and a half to two mile walk from Powell and Market to the Holiday Inn at Columbus and North Point, with some slight changes in elevation, depending upon the route you take.

Before BART went to the airport, I used to take the Shuttle buses (example) too. And, yes, like missphinx said, if you are bringing a lot of luggage, that can most certainly change the dynamic of how you want to travel to and from the airport.

Reserved and confirmed for Friday - Sunday

I have air and hotel reservations for Friday through Sunday. My reservation is at the Holiday Inn Fisherman's Wharf, the official hotel. I reserved a nonsmoking double bed for Friday & Saturday night at $140 per night, including taxes. I'd love to split the room with as many others as are willing. If I get more than 3 takers, I'll bring the queen-sized air mattress, and we can split the room cost equally.

I'm not sure if it's some place obvious and I'm missing it, but if it isn't yet - how's that registration thing looking up?

For the sake of it, I've created an event for you fellow Facebookers out there to join up. Go and RSVP if you're attending, and we can bring some more people together over there too.
