Library of Babel - new flash & pictures!

Library of Babel got another update. SB spotted it just after midnight.

It includes 3 pictures at the bottom of the page and the text:

"This is the place. Find the Cube, save Perplex City, claim £100,000."

pictures are, left to right:
1) Looking up into tall pine trees, possibly dusk/dawn
2) Hole approx 2ft deep in sandy-coloured soil with a blue oddly-shaped package in the bottom, presumably the cube. light woodland litter on top of the soil.
3) Some debate over this. I think it looks like a piece of wooden fence or gate. Might be wrong though.

Also, new flash at http://www.perplexcityacademy.com/libraryofbabel/thecube.html

Words eventually melded into each other until it was unintelligible. Ah well

Can't really comment on most of them, however it would appear to be 100% in Western Europe

transcript of thecube.html

The Most Noble (seems like a title, is in the bottom half of the screen though)

Things are moving
quickly now,
too quickly for me
to stop them.
We have reached
escape velocity
the point of no
return
Someone will
find the cube
soon,
will dig it from
the resting place
where
I
left it.
They may find me too.

They may have found me
already.
I have tried to dig myself deep
to conceal my location
but time has found me out.
I know what is happening.
I have seen the messages.
I know who they are!

But they
know who i am too,
and it is
too
late.
By the time you read this
I may be gone.
They will try to
make me tell them
what I know.
I will not tell
them.
I think,
I hope i will not.

Is
my life
worth so many others'?
Quickly then,
quickly.
I buried the cube in the woods,
In the place i was directed to.
You will know
which path
to take
when you find
it.
If you know who i am.

and when
the last of the earth
was scattered over
it
when i had spread the
twigs
and
branches
back over it
so that no-one would ever
know that a hole had been dug there
I traveled again.
I
don't know how
I
was back in the city
Time
had passed.
I
was holding a shovel
and an empty bag
the cube
is buried there still.
Seek it out,
claim your prize and,
if you can,
help me.

I'll edit the line breaks into this as they are in the flash, but this is the text. Line breaks are now sorted. Make it take up waaaaay too much page, but you get a better feel for the movement of it too Smile

I'm pretty sure it's right (barring typos etc Wink)

also, card #029, on the top of the stack of cards that appear about 2/3 of the way through, had been edited.

The anagrams are now arranged like this:
Code:
SOLO
 TLOCKMOHS
  RMOE
   ASPIR
    TAMERDAMS
     AALONECRB

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
London is gone, replaced by Amsterdam!

Most of the text is on the left hand side of the screen, apart from The Most Noble, which is on the right. It's then followed by some butterflies (I counted 8 ), and then three double helix things. Two then disappear, and the remaining one becomes a single helix. This breaks up into portions, and then some molecular diagrams appear. After that we get FRB... and then UUU followed by the stack of cards.
Sorry if this is a lousy description, but I thought it might be better than nothing. Hopefully someone will put up screen shots of anything significant.

And good spot about the change on #029!

Good shout Myf. The molecular diagrams are definitely a DNA base, although i don't know which for sure until i have a closer look. I'll put up screenshots and stuff tomorrow morning if no-one else has, but now i need to sleep.

also, ROT1 does this:
FRB -> GSC
UUU -> VVV

which afaik makes valid DNA sequences. Anyone want to comment?

it also changes our FRB... string to
UUU.... I am more confused than the 1st day I started playing. no joke. i'm gonna go get so drunk now. man. any way we can figure the location out from the type of trees shown, or the type of dirt. I know FL dirt looks like that until you dig another 1", then it's all clay. I dunna any takers?

Apart from changing the layout, most of the anagrams on #029 have been rearranged - the only one that is the same as on the card is SOLO, as far as I can see.

EDIT - The trees look like the big tall pine trees we have on lots of Forestry Commission land round here in Berkshire/Surrey/Hampshire. Not sure what sort they are though. I'll see if I can find out somehow. EDIT 2 - Not much luck looking on the web to see what they grow in local woods. I have a feeling they might be Scots pines, but they seem to grow some others as well (Corsican, and maybe lodgepole pines). I'll see if I can contact the forest ranger people in the morning, and they might be able to tell me.

(This is from Bookmore, he couldn't seem to post for some reason)

Still on #029 : As someone pointed on the channels, the first letter for each town now spells the word STRATA. As can be found in the Merriam Webster dictionary (http://www.m-w.com/dictionary/strata) :
1 : a bed or layer artificially made
2 a : a sheetlike mass of sedimentary rock or earth of one kind lying between beds of other kinds
b : a region of the sea or atmosphere that is analogous to a stratum of the earth
c : a layer of tissue <deep>
d : a layer in which archaeological material (as artifacts, skeletons, and dwelling remains) is found on excavation
The trees pictured on the LoB page are indeed most likely to be pine trees. Reference here. Interestingly enough, some Monarch (the 'Most Noble' ?) Butterflies spend winter in pine trees during their migration (reference here)

Butterflies

over on perplexorum laxon mentioned this:

"Initial idea... Purple being the most noble of colours, the most noble butterflies could be the Purple Emperor butterflies which inhabit oak woods in Southern England and Europe - although the trees don't look like oaks. Hmmm..."

I was thinking "or maybe the Monarch butterfly"

Not sure if they have those outside of the US?

the flash animation- helix part

Did you notice, that while the molecular diagrams are flashing up on the screen, the middle "tilde" (for lack of a better description for that remaining part of the helix) splits into thirds, then rejoins into one?

probably useless rna codon->amino acid mapping

On perplexorum (I cannot get posting to work there, so I'm just putting my thoughts here- I figure most folks check both places?),

makomk said

"ETA: UUU GAG AUG GCC AGA CUA GAA AUG UCA AGC GGG CAA CAG GAC mean anything to anyone?"

and silently broken gave this link

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...rd_amino_acids

Combining the two with this page http://web.mit.edu/esgbio/www/dogma/dogma.html
let me convert the codons into the one letter codes for their respective amino acids.

looks meaningless to me, but I figure I'd post it so no one else would waste time on it...

UUU GAG AUG GCC AGA CUA GAA AUG UCA AGC GGG CAA CAG GAC

uuu phenylalanine f
gag glutamic acid e
aug methionine or start m or start
gcc alanine a
aga arginine r
cua leucine l
gaa <edit> glutamic acid e </edit>
aug methionine or start m
uca <edit> serine s </edit>
agc serine s
ggg glycine g
caa glutamine q
cag glutamine q
gac aspartic acid d

Or if we want to use the three letter abbreviations for the a.a.s instead, it's still junk:
pheglumetalaargleuglxmetserserglyglnglnasp

I do wonder if the starts and stop are meaningful- when rna is transcribed, these mark the beginning and ending of a "word" as it were. Maybe we only need to worry about "arlem"...

yeah- looks like a (very new, green wood) split rail fence to me, with spiderwebs and the debris that get caught in them.

jenniebez the string you posted matches my mod 4 math, with each of those letters matching 0,1,2, or 3. looks like the right way to go. now what were the 4 things shows during the DNA RNA strings breaking up and going back together. if we can figure out what to do with that, it might change UUU GAG AUG GCC AGA CUA GAA AUG UCA AGC GGG CAA CAG GAC to something else.

nevermind, those just point out the 4 parts of rna; u, g, a, c.
