They listen

Just got this on a failed attempt:

Quote:
Don't be ridiculous. Maybe Nettleton does need to hold your hand? She is requesting the NAMES of the fonts

You have received positive Karma.

Well, since those are font names, we must have the wrong one(s) somewhere.

Corrected font name--sorry, sorry
I muffed it guys and gals--my sincere apologies

Damn. I seriously muffed number one. The letter "f" isn't right. The trouble with this font puzzle is that there are so many versions of a couple of these. (It's been part of my job for the last ten years to track down fonts, which is why I'm so mad at myself for missing this, especially since I've typeset an entire book in the font in question.) Anyway, I've got a revised list below.

Okay, if they want the names of the fonts, this is what they should be, in my opinion:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
1. Sabon, 1967---link
2. Cooper Old Style, 1926---link---wikipedia link for more info
3. Times New Roman, 1932---link
4. Comic Sans, 1994---link
5. Optima, 1958---link
6. Gill Sans, 1929---link
7. Baskerville Oldstyle, 1757---link

Note according to the Linotype site link, Baskerville Old Style was part of the set originally created by John Baskerville.

I'm including an image this time, so that all of you can check it easily against the image from IG.

If you look at the image, all of them are going to be pretty smooth, because I exported from an InDesign file, so they are going to be smoother than no. 2. Since I don't own that font (though at some point in the future, I'm going to buy it--I like it a lot), I've had to do a screen snapshot from the myfonts.com website.

I tried the following and it didn't work, so the next thing to do would be to try reordering based on date (sadly, this tapped me out of Credits again...although the next credit increase should give me enough again)

Sabon
Cooper Old Style
Times New Roman
Comic Sans
Optima
Gill Sans
Baskerville Oldstyle

It might also be that i typed "Baskerville Oldstyle" instead of "Baskerville Old Style"...not sure which one is the official name.

Tried a couple of times:

Baskerville
Cooper
Gill Sans
Times New Roman
Optima
Sabon
Comic Sans

Baskerville
Cooper Black
Gill Sans
Times New Roman
Optima
Sabon
Comic Sans

Cooper still makes me wonder. The 1926 version was famous for being bold. Only recently they made a light version of it, and the one in the puzzle is defenitively light. So I also tried:

Baskerville
Gill Sans
Times New Roman
Optima
Sabon
Comic Sans
Cooper Lightface.

And all I got was 600 less credits.

Someone else want to try some research on the fonts?

I'm going to look at the fonts again, but I'm pretty sure we've got the right ones, just maybe the dates aren't quite accurate. Someone else want to check out some of the dates and confer?

Oh, and I'm sure it's Cooper Oldstyle or Old Style. Cooper black is much too thick.

Oh, and can someone do a screen snapshot of the puzzle to put somewhere? Since my karma is so green, I can't manage to even view the puzzle. I'm wondering if we're just supposed to supply the names of the fonts, and that THEY are going to figure out the dates, if you see what I mean, but I don't have any idea, because I can't see the puzzle entry page itself.

Where should I put info from the admins?

I got an email from the admins regarding puzzle solving. Can someone suggest a good place to post the info? I'm writing here to ask, since this is a subject that is still in progress.

Thanks all.

Could someone with credits and red karma try this?

Okay, I think this is the order of entry. And guys, it really DOES make a difference whether the Oldstyle is included or not (either Old Style or Oldstyle--I think I've got them listed properly, with and without space, but that's another permutation to check). The typefaces that are not Old Style do not have the correct looking characters, particularly the Q in Baskerville.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Baskerville Oldstyle
Cooper Old Style
Gill Sans
Times New Roman
Optima
Sabon
Comic Sans

Keeping my fingers crossed.

Tried that same order using Baskerville Old Style, separate words. Didn't work.

Then I found a site with all the fonts: http://www.identifont.com, only that Sabon was Sabon Next. Dated with 2002. And Baskerville was Old Face

So I used the information from that site.

That's 400 less credits. I only have two more tries, so I'll stop for now.

After a little research of my own I ave come up with the following:

1. Garamond
2. Cooper Old Style
3. Times
4. Comic Sans
5. Optima
6. Gill Sans
7. Baskerville Old Face

I am unable to solve the red puzzles, though. If one of you wants to give this a try let us know if it works.

WolfHawk, I think maybe you've got it

I'm pretty sure that the first one is Sabon, so if someone tries the list as WolfHawk has and that doesn't work, try all of her list with Sabon instead of Garamond.

What I think that you have correct, though, is maybe the version of the font the are using for Baskerville is Old Face, so that may be where our problem lies.

As for the music puzzles, I'm still working on it. You wouldn't believe how many symphonies I've listened to in the last week...
