I noticed that. The Mei is always in italics, even on meta promotional material: http://www.watershed.co.uk/cgi-bin/WebObjects/Watershed.woa/wa/news?object=119
I think it's very unlikely that they would suddenly decide to change the name four days before the start and the italics draw your attention to the fact that it's not part of the word.

Was wondering if it could be Melvin Geist's initials or something.

I put Mei in Wikipedia, and these results came out (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mei):

* Mei (梅) is the Chinese word for the tree known as ume in Japanese.
* Mei (梅) is also a Chinese family name, originating from and meaning the same as the plant mentioned above.
* Mei is a genus of bird-like Chinese dinosaur.
* Mei is a name for Persian wine.
* MeI is chemical jargon for Methyl iodide.
* Mei (冥) is one of the most difficult songs in beatmania IIDX.
* MEI Academy is an international school based in Canada.

Some of them are obviously uninteresting to us, but "MeI is chemical jargon for Methyl iodide." may be something of interest since clicking the hyperlink to the wikipedia page designed for it (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methyl_iodide#Choice_of_iodomethane_as_a_methylating_agent) displays the information:

"Iodomethane, commonly called methyl iodide and commonly abbreviated "MeI", is the chemical compound with the formula CH3I. This dense volatile liquid is related to methane by replacement of one hydrogen atom by an atom of iodine. It is colourless, although upon exposure to light, samples develop a purplish tinge caused by the formation of I2. Storage over copper metal inhibits this process. Methyl iodide is widely used in organic synthesis to deliver a methyl group, via the transformation called methylation. It is naturally emitted by rice plantations in small amounts.[1]"

Bold is mine.
