[PUZZLE] [SOLVED] B. Wilson Password at SRI

Bryan Wilson has ent Eva the following email:

Quote:

Dear Eva,

As you know, your parents and I were very close. When first your father died so suddenly when you were small and then your mother tragically succumed to her long illness, I promised I would take care of you. I have in one way or another been watching your progression all your life and I have seen you grow into a special person. You must know I would not want to cause you any distress. If you look at me more closely you will see the bigger picture; you will find out the truth from there.

Yours truly,

Bryan Wilson.

I'm thinking this is a clue pointing to his photo on the SRI website.
(See photo below. - drizjr)
EDIT:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
There are several messages in the background of Wilson's photo on the SRI website, including:

usr = Wilson
/BWpersonal

Delude=?

Guilt
Regret

which gives us

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

http://www.sri-uk.org/BWpersonal

The username is Wilson. Still working on the password (but I'm at work so I'm doing it on the sly)

edit: Split the puzzle goodness off from this thread and added the photo for a visual.- drizjr

Definitions of Delude:

http://www.thefreedictionary.com/delude

Above delude on the chalkboard are 10 dashes...I looked for a 10-letter synonym for delude, but so far nothing...

I've tried eva, guilt, regret, and delude as possible PW but no joy...

I think it's EYA, but I'm not sure. There's also letters beneath those words.

I've attached a slightly modified crop to help make sense of it.

I noticed that "formula" too...

to my eye it looks like: a + c + c = d

I have no math skills, but this doesn't look like any familiar formula...assuming it is important.

It doesn't match the color of eya, guilt, or regret...

I'm looking at file information for the photo and there's one thing I see that is curious. The caption or alt description is coming up as M3391M-1011.

Anyone know what this means? Could be no more significant than the fact the image was saved in Photoshop CS2, but I'm curious...

EDIT: Also, it looks as if the original picture was taken May 22, 2006...looks like they've been planning this for a looong time...

2nd Edit: That M3391M-1011 may not be significant, I think it is just some part of the file naming. I googled it and came up with lots of other photos with that code as the title, so I doubt it is anything of importance.

Why would you a lower case letter on EVa or EYa when all the rest off the letters are capital - So EVO - Acronyn = Evolution?

Just A thought

The first six dashes look slightly separate from the second four cos they're slightly higher.

The word 'delude' reminds me of 'Deception Sites Online' on the Subject180287 site.

A + B + C could mean the three words above, D being the result of all three combined. Or alternatively, the D could be Delude and you have to turn the equation round to find the missing factor:

Delude = Guilt + Regret + ? (This would be assuming the first word is EVA, as a note for Eva)

I agree about the lower case being odd, but I do not think that it is an O, I'm pretty sure it has a tail, but then it is pretty hard to see..

Well, the 'i' in guilt is lowercase as well. Some people's printing comes out that way. Especially male teachers (My bio teacher writes like that all the time, switching between capitals, lowercase, and cursive)

It's pretty safe to call it Eva I think Smile

Also, as I look at the picture..it becomes obvious that Wilson's mustache is fake, and the gray of his eyebrows and sideburns is stage makeup!!

Perhaps this is poor makeup work, or maybe it is intentional so that we become more suspicious of him?

Michelle

Tried putting together the words eva guilt and regret together and then taking out the repititious letters but that would leave onnly 9 characters
v a u i l t e r g which as near as i can tell is still no help

We got a solve

Thanks to Severn who once again made the connection http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cryptarithm. We spent several hours this morning in chat trying to figure out what the number for each letter might be. Then RothkoWoofed found this http://www.tkcs-collins.com/truman/alphamet/alpha_solve.shtml
and presto:

Code:
The following alphametic puzzle:

    EVA
  GUILT
+REGRET
-------
 DELUDE

has 1 solution in base 10.

It is:

    862    A=2 D=5 E=8 G=9 I=7 L=1 R=4 T=3 U=0 V=6
  90713
+489483
-------
 581058

http://www.sri-uk.org/BWpersonal/

so the un = Wilson and the pw = 581058

So once you log on it gives you a picture of ten year old eva wearing a white dress. Behind her is some sort of work table. Wilson's Maybe?
