[TRAILHEAD] Jen???

I just had a rather cryptic stranger hit me up, and received a link to a site. I've searched and with little to go on other than the reference to bees (yeah, not going there), I don't see it relating to anything current.

Quote:
[18:56] maxwell1422000: Hi there!
[18:56] AngryBanana1125: hello... do i know you?
[18:56] maxwell1422000: Did you know that after a bee stings you it dies?
[18:57] maxwell1422000: It can also sting you after it's dead.
[18:57] AngryBanana1125: yes, i did
[18:57] maxwell1422000: http://download.yousendit.com/10A6C6BA1C972667
[18:57] maxwell1422000: Are you ready?

Transcription of the mp3:
Quote:
Jen, can you hear me?
Jen listen, I need you to keep your eyes open and stay focused on me - can you do that?
*sigh*
Jen, come on! Stay with me!!!
*some transformer sounding music*

*if this is related to Who is Megan Kyle I'll edit

good lawd! any URL which says "download", "yousendit", and an undeciperable ID tag strikes fear in my heart.

http://www.yousendit.com/static.php?key=company

look at what that site does: helps people send large files.

therefore, I would NEVER click without knowing what to expect.

Ooo very nice and semi-creepy. The MP3 is named "Week3 Subject3 - Feb 01, 2007 19.21.51" So if it's an arg, maybe we have to search for the other mp3 logs?

And btw catherwood, I scanned it for viruses/bots and it's safe.

I wasn't around for the "i love bees" (is that right?) arg for Halo wasn't it? But I think I did hear something about a sequel arg being done. With the reference to bees, maybe it has something to do with that?

I got it a little while ago, and wasn't quite sure what to make of it...interesting stuff.

Unfortunately, I doubt its a sequel to ILB (at least an official one). Two things make me say that:

1. An official ILB sequel would almost certainly be run by 4orty2wo--and they just finished Vanishing Point.

2. An AIM message as a Trailhead is not the kind of launch 4orty2wo would do--AIMing in general is verymuchso a Grassroots thing.

An unofficial sequel, though? Definitely possible.

I wasn't around for Ilovebees myself, but I did go on the website and listen to all the MP3s they had. Next best thing right?

I have to say I listened to the MP3 too and it sounds like it could come from Ilovebees because of the beginning and ending sound, which is typical of their MP3s.

Whether or not it is indeed a sequel for Ilovebees, this MP3 is definitely something to debate on whether it's the start of a sequel (official or not) or it's someone who has wishful thinking and is trying to drag everyone along.

But I swear to god I've heard that male voice somewhere else before, I just can't put my finger on it......

I guess what i meant was that if a trailhead involves downloading an unknown file from an unknown stranger, I just wouldn't play along. If a PM chooses to launch that way, they may be limiting their initial audience to the less paranoid players. Glad to hear it was safe (and that people know to have protection in place).

we've already been thru a fake ILB2 (link to an archive when i get around to it)

So, had a very long convo with the guy. Here are the useful excerpts:

Quote:
Degravedi (7:45:47 PM): Hey, a friend of mine says you just creeped her the hell out and I should ask you about some girl dying?
maxwell1422000 signed off at 7:47:36 PM.
maxwell1422000 is offline and will receive your IMs when signing back in.
maxwell1422000 (7:49:20 PM): Is this some sort of practical joke?
Degravedi (7:49:30 PM): Uh, actually that's what I meant to ask you
maxwell1422000 (7:49:42 PM): You're like, the 5th person to im me
maxwell1422000 (7:49:53 PM): I have no idea what you're talking about
maxwell1422000 (7:50:10 PM): You and your lunatic friends need to find someone else to harass.
Degravedi (7:50:22 PM): ...okay dude whatever. Nice joke buddy.
maxwell1422000 (7:50:37 PM): Come again?
Degravedi (7:51:42 PM): Seriously, she has a log of your convo.
Degravedi (7:51:49 PM): 18:56] maxwell1422000: Did you know that after a bee stings you it dies?
[18:57] maxwell1422000: It can also sting you after it's dead.
[18:57] maxwell1422000: http://download.yousendit.com/10A6C6BA1C972667
maxwell1422000 (7:52:44 PM): I can *honestly say* I never typed that, although I have heard of people hijacking and splicing aim accounts before.
maxwell1422000 (7:53:32 PM): woah
maxwell1422000 (7:53:38 PM): what the hell is this?
Degravedi (7:54:01 PM): Yeah, hence the "you creeped her out"
maxwell1422000 (7:54:17 PM): I never typed any of that
maxwell1422000 (7:54:21 PM): I swear on my life
Degravedi (7:54:57 PM): Uh, well then you might wanna get a firewall or check your computer for viruses/bot programs
maxwell1422000 (7:55:16 PM): Yeah, I think I'll do that.
maxwell1422000 (7:55:25 PM): So what do you think this is?
Degravedi (7:56:30 PM): No clue. The filename suggests an audio log of something. Hopefully just a prank though. I don't think that "Jen" got out too well off
maxwell1422000 (7:56:57 PM): Yeah...
Degravedi (7:57:21 PM): Anyway, sorry for jumping on your case!
maxwell1422000 (7:57:53 PM): Nah, it's no problem...I've been meaning to look into installing a firewall.
maxwell1422000 (7:58:04 PM): I just recently got cable net
maxwell1422000 (7:58:22 PM): and all sorts of junk has happened on my system
maxwell1422000 (7:58:25 PM): since then
Degravedi (7:58:43 PM): ah, yeah an open connection can be dangerous. All sorts of bad people out there trying to snatch your info whenever they can. And oh? Like what?
maxwell1422000 (7:59:35 PM): It's weird stuff...like my mouse has been moving around by itself, as though someone was controlling it remotely
maxwell1422000 (8:00:04 PM): and on ocassion when i'm surfing the net and typing in a new web addy, the delete key just *stops* working
maxwell1422000 (8:00:09 PM): strangeness...
Degravedi (8:00:34 PM): whoa! That is certainly freaky. definitely sounds like someone is remotely hijacking your computer
maxwell1422000 (8:00:46 PM): prolly

Quote:
maxwell1422000 (8:12:29 PM): so is your friend alright?
Degravedi (8:13:02 PM): I told her what you said, she still thinks it's creepy but agrees that someone's probably just playing some sort of game
maxwell1422000 (8:13:20 PM): yeah
maxwell1422000 (8:13:28 PM): but to go so far as to make that mp3?
maxwell1422000 (8:13:35 PM): that's f'dup
Degravedi (8:14:44 PM): yeah really. I've been looking at the site it's hosted on, but I can't find any place that says who uploaded the file. Not like youtube or something.
maxwell1422000 (8:15:46 PM): I've actually used that site before...i'm a member of somethingawful.com and when i have an audio share or somesuch i'll use it as a temporary host station
maxwell1422000 (8:17:00 PM): it's fairly frequent in using as a temporary uploading place to host files that relate to forums and things
maxwell1422000 (8:17:13 PM): *frequently used

Quote:
Degravedi (8:25:20 PM): I can't stop thinking about the mp3 though. And the message that came with it about bees. Was she killed by a swarm of bees or what?
Degravedi (8:25:32 PM): just...weird
maxwell1422000 (8:26:04 PM): hmm
maxwell1422000 (8:26:32 PM): ::shrug::
maxwell1422000 (8:26:42 PM): it's damn cryptic, whatever it means
maxwell1422000 (8:28:12 PM): well
maxwell1422000 (8:28:23 PM): a simple google search brought this up
maxwell1422000 (8:28:24 PM): http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=12669207&dopt=Abstract
maxwell1422000 (8:29:12 PM): sorry i couldn't be of more help
Degravedi (8:31:10 PM): Lol, certainly not your fault. But yeah, I know beestings can kill people if stung in the wrong place or if you're allergic. Have no idea why someone would have, keep, upload, and send a recording of it though. Actually, my first though was that it sounds like some far out experiment or something. Not to many people keep audio logs like that, especially with tages liks "Week 3, subject 3"
maxwell1422000 (8:31:59 PM): yeah...
maxwell1422000 (8:32:13 PM): disturbing world we live in these days

Oh and apparently he's a college student in Kansas and doesn't like to drink or party.

Anybody a member there? We could look for his account to get more contact info. I tried looking but (due to not being a member) couldn't find anything.

I played ILB.

I've noticed there's been a lot of buzzing...ahem...on various gaming forums and websites about a "sequel" to ILB, or about the game "starting up again" -- all, apparently, because someone visited the website and decided it had changed.

It hasn't.

It's exactly where we left it. Yes, there's a countdown, but that was there at the end of the game: it's counting down to the date in the future when the Covenant attack Earth, the date at which the part of the ILB story that took place in the future ended, and in which Halo 2 begins. The pictures on the background rotate, so they may change if you visit it multiple times, but there's nothing new there.

So, any rumors based on the idea that the site has changed are based on mistaken information.

Just FYI.

...and I'll also add on, it doesn't sound like he's saying "Jen", but "Jan", who was a character in ILB. The voice sounds like someone attempting to impersonate Jersey. I just got the AIM this evening...

It sounds like it might be someone attempting an unofficial sequel to ilovebees, and this clip/rabbithole is Jersey trying to revive Jan after something.

I agree with Phaedra - and confident it's not official from 42. ..more than likely a spinoff or unofficial continuation. I'm all for it if the quality's there... but this really doesn't scream 42 in the slightest.
