Theory -- the *why* of this ARG

I came up with this theory, which I'll throw out there. Feel free to shoot me down. But it relates to Revolutions, the Metacortechs ARG, and the Matrix Online... This may have been thought up by someone else, but I'll just say my piece:

I was thinking about the *why* of this ARG. And how it relates to the Matrix world -- not just the obvious "we live in the Matrix and are all pod-born" bit, but how it relates to the entire story as depicted in the films/anime/video game.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
At the end of Revolutions, the Architect states that he will allow the unplugging of people who wish to be unplugged. But how do people realize they want to be unplugged? Will someone tell them that the world isn't real and that they can be unplugged to join other humans in the "Real World"? Doubtful.

The Matrix Online, a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) is set to debut in 2004 (month/day unknown). Apparently, we will be able to "jack in" to the Matrix.

From what I've read about this ARG, it will last until sometime early 2004.

So here's the theory: The people playing the ARG are providing the story for the people in the Matrix to realize that the world is not real: People in the Matrix still plugged in (us), realize that something is wrong with the world -- weird things are happening; people are disappearing and then reappearing through trees and tents as well as other paranormal activities. It is my thought that something in the ARG will lead to some sort of communicative contact with the "Real World" -- maybe Seraph. Or Sati. Or Morpheus, Niobe, the Kid, etc. It will be at this point that the ARG ends and the Matrix Online begins -- when the ARG is completed, contact made to the "outside world", we (the "pod-born") realize that another world exisits, and the mind unplugged. The ARG is providing for us a reason to "look for him" much the same way as Trinity explained in the club when Neo first met her in the first film. The ARG was created to question everything. After all, "it is the question that drives us".

There. As I said, feel free to shoot me down -- this is only my first post. It is all merely speculation at this point. But there must be a reason.

I'm not 100% sure this is a Matrix-movie-related ARG. It is professional, yes. They use movie references, yes. The setting is definitely Matrix-y, yes. But we don't know for sure that this is a Matrix ARG, sponsored by the Matrix moviemakers.

I'm not sure where the line is between being an official Matrix ARG and being a copyright infringement.

If it isn't an official ARG, it is free to take place at any time.

If it is an official ARG, it must take place after Neo is unplugged. Other than that, it can be pretty much any time. Your theories may be correct. This ARG may very well be just like the anime films and take place at a specific time along the timeline.

I'm just saying that I haven't seen 100% proof that this is official stuff. It's good stuff. It's unbelieveable. But I'm not sold that it is official.

I really, really hope it is though!

That is probably the best "first post" I have ever read.
Very Happy

I think what JPI is trying to say is that the ARG will last up untill the launch of "The Matrix Online"

I'm not a betting girl, but if I had to bet, I would say the ARG will end around Christmas 2003, when MetaVRX is released. I just think this ARG is too in-depth and complicated (with wonderful music, photos, art, and writing) that it would be too difficult to keep up for a full year, especially if there is a professional company involved in the production.

Also, it seems the storylines are beginning to draw together, so we may be seeing the beginning of the end.

On one hand I hope I'm wrong - I'd love for this to go on for more than a year! How fun would that be, and think of all the places where it could go! But then again, I'm not sure if I have the stamina to keep up with everything for that long!

First thing's first: Insomniac: Thanks!

mainro: I can't remember the source. If I come across it again, I'll be sure to post. It could be, however, that I crossed synapses and am thinking of what trip mentioned with the release of MetaVRX, in which case my theory has a flaw or two.

It could be, though, that once people realize the world isn't real and are unplugged, they need time for muscle reconstruction and Kung Fu and Drunken Boxing training. This could take time. Now I'm just drawing at straws... Confused

It is just my thought that the Wachowskis put so much effort into creating a multiple-media format to deploy their "Matrix" idea -- anime, a video game, films, and an MMORPG. Why not an ARG too? There are clear links between the anime, Enter the Matrix, and film, so why not connect the MMORPG and this ARG?

Has anyone had a chance to test MetaVRX? Is MetaVRX a codename for the Matrix Online?

I was thinking along those lines, but I don't think anyone's been contacted yet.

While I can understand the psychological need to 'fit' this ARG into the overall Matrix universe, I have to say that I don't quite understand this fascination with The Matrix Online. Correct me if I'm wrong but, although I'm sure the interaction online between characters and players - as well as the graphics and storyline - will be very enthralling, will really match up to what we have experienced with this ARG? In particular I'm thinking here of the CD's - actual interaction with the creators of this game (or at least people hired by the creators of the game) whilst being in the game was one of the most exciting things I've ever read.
Bascially, I just fear that The Matrix Online is just going to be something of a letdown for everyone who has played this ARG; it simply won't match up in terms of interaction (although I'm sure the bullet-time effect will be more realistic than when I practice it at home; I need to get those stunt guys to come teach me how to that wire work!) Wink

MetaVRX (Virtual Reality eXtreme) is the code name for Metacortechs' fictional virtual reality software which uses AI to anticipate a players move to prevent lag. It also includes a olfactory chest plate so you can even SMELL the game.

See press release here: http://metacortechs.com/pr/mvr030919.html

Anyway, I don't think anyone will REALLY beta test it for a long time. Smile

Thanks for that second link, Mainro. That's a much better site than the Warner one.
