has anyone thought of trying 'FIVECOWS' as the key?

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Yes I'm joking.

Just on the off-chance that I might be able to get some ideas, I recently took out a one-year subscription to 2600: The Hacker Quarterly. Now, so far there've been no articles that have any bearing on 13th Labour, but I did try another channel.

Specificdally, I've sent out a few snail-mail and email letters to some of the people whose addresses I've found in 2600, giving them the rundown on AO13 and asking their advice.

Today, I received my first response (this came from a guy whose compliation CD I purchased a while back to use as mind fuel during late-night brainstorming sessions):

Doug 'DeThMeDiSn' Talley wrote:

I just wanted to let you know that I received your letter the other day and wanted to say thank you for the positive input. We are currently working on the next installment of Hack Music and hopefully we'll have it finished soon.

As for your question about the game, some of our best people are working on it for you. We've been doing some research on the game and are starting to formulate some ideas on how to solve the card at hand. It will give us a bit of a tensions breaker after the long hours that have been put in lately!

Lastly, we like your enthusiasm and would like to stay in touch with you. So, until we get the new site up and running for our club, we can communicate by other means than just snail mail. At the top, if you haven't noticed, is some extra information for you to use ti get in direct contact with us if you wish. I was going to encode it for you to break, but that card 251 is enough of a brain teaser for you at present!

Look forward to talking to you again soon, but I need to get back to it. Take care and be safe.

Boolean functions

I've just slogged through the whole 34 pages hoping for inspiration or something. meh.

But I did want to point out one thing. George Boole, considered the father of computational mathematics, died on December 8, 1864.
I know someone mentioned him before, but nothing else was said about it. I just wanted to make sure that it wasn't overlooked by those coder types that might get something from it.

<--- running the Labour13 program on all available work and home computers - all appropriate appendages crossed.

Something to think about...

Forgive if this has been covered before, I did a search and didn't find anything. Working for an ISP, something jumped out at me when I saw this card. The syntax (groups of two alphanumeric characters, 0-9 and A-F) is strikingly similar to a WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) key. Has anyone pursued this option at all? Granted, even if it is a key (or series of keys), it's useless without knowing what network it is to be applied to... but something to think about nonetheless.

It's actually strikingly similar to a great many things. That's the standard programmer/techie way of printing binary data as hex--each pair of characters is a byte.

Misprint? Printing error?

Sorry if this is a bit off topic (Has nothing to do with a solve...or five cows for that matter). I recently got a copy of this card and was wondering if anyone else had seen anything similar. It looks like a printing error, the purplish background color has been printed over the entire card, including the silver border. It makes the border a shiny purple color instead of the normal silver. It is also difficult to see the pixel pattern. I was just curious if anyone else had seen something like this? It would be kind of neat if it was a one of a kind.

Mine is like that too. I thought they were all like that, since the one shown on the card catalog appears to have the purplish tint to it also.

It turns out that there are two different versions floating around out there. (Maybe from two different print runs? Maybe because they changed the card design?)

I was wondering what happened to the 'Assault on the 13th Labour' attempt. The web site hasn't been updated for ages. Has everybody given up on this card ?

Well, I'm still running the client. And I presume plenty of other people are.

I'm still going as well (take that SETI@Home). Four machines, mostly 24 hours a day. I'm almost at 400k units. Hooray.

At this point I'm thinking the message starts something like "By the time you decrypt this, The Cube will have been found..."
