wow, skip a few days and the puzzles crumble! Great work all.
For what it's worth I'd kinda expect a 12th puzzle, just because it's a nice round number. But then it would depend if the word/phrase we are looking for is a real name.
Assuming 12 letters the F_R_ at the end makes me think ~ackford...?

that fits so well!
Aside from hoping that isn't the answer, I think it can't be right, as it would be a self fulfilling prophesy, i.e. how would they know it backfired before sending the packages... hopefully.
BTW, did Derek ever say how many toys were taken? I don't remember seeing any number, but it would give us the number of letters

No, I asked him on his forums once, but never got a response. I don't think he wants to tell.

massachusetts bay, horse head, captain ray mardsden, gloucester, schooner, serpent
All referring to the Sea Serpent of Gloucester,
but still seeing what name fits
Leads to
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Matthew Gaffney which puts "A" in spot 3
or
Linnean Society puts an "O"
or
Hawkins Wheeler puts an "H"
I think

It's an audio cassette tape container, the tape measure was inside.
