University of Florida Game Studies Conference
Dave Szulborski speaking March 1
Event starting Thu Mar 01, 2007 1:00 am for 2 days

The 2007 Game Studies conference at the University of Florida will be held March 1 - 2, and Dave Szulborski will be our keynote speaker on March 1. Yes, that is the eve of ArgFest-o-Con, but if you're on the East coast and you're not going to make it out to the Fest, this is your chance to hear Dave speak about ARGs.

(You may have noticed that Dave's attendance at ArgFest-o-Con was listed as "pending availability from another conference" -- we're that other conference. For the record, we had ours scheduled first Wink )

The conference itself is our 3rd annual event here at UF, and if you're not familiar with Game Studies, it's basically what Jane McG does. We are aspiring or actual academics talking about gaming from a variety of disciplines and perspectives. Most of us will have a Humanities-oriented perspective, though. I, for example, am getting an English degree.

We don't have an exact schedule yet, but that information will be posted on the conference website as soon as it's finalized. I'll probably update this thread as well. It will definitely be Thursday, though. We're also going to be back-to-back with the annual Comics Conference (March 3 - 4), so if you're in the area or want to stay for that, you're definitely welcome to. More information on that event is available on the comics conference website.

All events are free and open to the public, by the way, but if you're coming it would be great if you could register on the website or just let me know.

I've been using first person to discuss this, so you've probably guessed that I'm involved in running it. I am involved, but I'm not actually in charge this year. Still, I'd be happy to answer any questions you have about the conference or Gainesville or whatever else.

Sounds interesting though, if I weren't at ARGfest, I might have considered it... good for a short vacationy trip to FL, no? Meet up with a few Floridianites. Let us know how it goes... as I'm sure you will Wink
If you're able, post transcripts or some such. It would be interesting to hear his thoughts on the genre.

I should have mentioned this, but we're hoping to host a webcast of some sort. If it works out, we'll try to have some kind of concurrent chat running so anybody watching online can pose questions. At the very least, we should be publishing video after the fact, much like we did for last year's conference

Sorry for the double post, but I just wanted to bump this thread and remind anyone that's interested that this event will be starting tomorrow. Dave Szulborski will be speaking tomorrow at University of Florida at 7:00 PM.

The live web broadcast didn't work out, but we should have video of everything afterward, which we'll plan on posting afterward as soon as possible.

Here's the full schedule.

Let me know if you have any questions, and I hope I'll see some of you there!
