This one looks interesting. Count me in. I sent Conor an email, hopefully I'll get a reply soon. Here's what I sent:

Quote:
Hi Conor. I found your website through a friend, and I'd like to say that I'm sorry about Daniel. It seems like you knew him well. I'd like to help in any way I can, but I'm not quite sure how to go about doing that. Is there anything specific I can do to help?

I did have a thought about the first entry on your website. Reading that entry, you describe a disc shaped object sighted in the sky. The most obvious thing I can think of is a UFO, or alien space craft of some kind. They're often reported as disc shaped. Did this disc behave in strange ways, or display manuevers that convential aircraft wouldn't be able to do?

EDIT: Got a reply from Conor.

Quote:
Jerry, yes the disk behaved in a very strange way. It landed at a location near Haggardstown. Do you know it? We think something might be hidden there. It's so good to hear from you, man. I was thinking we had no allies left.

And here's what I replied.

Quote:
You've definitely got allies left. More than you probably think, though not all of them will announce themselves. My guess is that the swift military response is due to some kind of foreknowledge on the part of the military. Maybe the disk was an experimental aircraft. Maybe it was an alien spacecraft. Maybe it was something else entirely, right now there doesn't seem to be enough information to make a firm statement as to what it was. But I do think the military has at least some idea of what's going on and what that thing is.

Did anyone manage to get a look at it after it landed? Did anyone take pictures or video footage of the disk in the air? Has the military made any statements, or have there been any strange, mysterious men who seem to have more authority than the military roaming about? Also, what happened to Daniel? I know it's probably hard to talk about, but there might be some clue there as to who or what we're dealing with.

Alright, got a reply, and an interesting one at that. Here's what was said.

Glitch,
Are you a Steinbeck man? Tortilla Flat was a fine book. Daniel was a Steinbeck fan too. I'll be in touch.

I'm terribly sorry to hear about daniel, but I'm afraid I'm not aware of him. Can you give me any additional info reguarding him or his duties?
Also, we recieved a message from you, but apparently the data was garbled in transmission. You were queried about "these things" you have mentioned, but your resopnse was truncated.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Glad to be of service,

Glitch.

So, in reading about Tortilla Flat, Sprknotes are here, it turns out to be about a group of old friends qo go about a series of misadventures after coming home from world war one. There is much drinking and eating, but one of the "paisanos" WHOSE NAME IS DANNY, gets incredibly drunk at a party for him, challenges the world to a fight, leaps off a cliff, and dies. Many say that before he hit the ground, they could hear him fighting with a supernatural spirit of some kind.

So, the main charater from the book shares a name with our good friend daniel. It's about a group of guys that live totgether in the same house, going on misadventures.

I definitly think there's a connection here, other than the fact out daniel liked Steinbeck as well.

(p.s. for those few uneducated heathens that may inhabit this board, Steinebeck is famous primarily for The Grapes of Wrath, Of Mice and Men, and East of Eden.

Jerry sounds like he wants to help, but he needs to pass this test to prove himself. He could be a government man. Were're not sure about him yet.

Glitch seems trustworthy. This should be no problem for him.

Crystal has provided comms, I think we can trust her too.

So far, so good. We are dug in here in the complex. We'll wait to hear from our new recruits before we make any moves.

We are experiencing a temporary grid disruption. Conor can only read mail with the correct subject line. You must hurry.

Well the quote is from the book "The Pearl" by John Steinbeck.

I'm coming up with a blank on how to decode the characters though.

I received a reply from Conor.

Thank you for your help so far. The grid is no longer safe. See the web site for details.

Just to let everybody know, Jerry is me. I guess I have to pass a test.

EDIT: Wait, so I have to be the one to solve this if I want them to trust me? Or do I just have to email them the solve? Because I have no idea how to decode that string.

The only copy of The Pearl I can find online is in Google's cache:
http://tinyurl.com/2jor5r

The exact quote comes up when the protagonist ("Kino") is trying to sell an abnormally large pearl he has found. The pearl-dealers all conspire against him to offer him a low price for the pearl. The "evil music" thing is a recurring theme in the story; whenever Kino feels especially happy, scared or angry he hears certain songs in his head.

I'm stumped on the code, though. Presumably once we solve this we send an email to Conor with the solution in the subject line.

Yeah, I figure the solve will equal the subject line once we have it. Someone who knows Steinbeck better than me, I have a question: Were there any ciphers of any kind used prominently in any of his works? It's been a while since I read Of Mice and Men so I can't recall offhand about that one.

25 23 unique characters in the encoded message. Substitution?

Edit: Duh...

I'm a big Grapes of Wrath (THE great American novel) and of mice and men fan....but I'm not as familiar with The Pearl.

My verison of it has the quote on Pages 65-66 if that triggers any thoughts, although I don't know what they would be.

In the novel, the Pearl goes on to cause great troubles. Some people die. Kino himself is threatened by those trying to steal the pearl. In the end (I'll spoiler in case someone wants to read it)...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Kino and his girlfriend Juana through the pearl into the water to be done with it.

that's all I got...back to the code....

Patterns

Microsoft word tells me there are 339 characters in the message

There's definitely a pattern in the code. Or, at least, some patterns jump out. And there's a pattern to them. If that makes sense....

there are places with matching groups of symbols. So far I've found 2. In both places the matching symbols have the following pattern: AABACB

Here's one occurence of this:
[;))^[; ))^[@@^[;))^[;@[,[@@^
A1 = [;))^
B1 = [@@^
C1 = [;@[,

Later in the message I found this similar pattern:
]@_;{]@_;{/.;{]@_;{/.^{/.;{
A2 = ]@_;{
B2 = /.;{
C2 = /.^{

There may be more of these, but looking at that string kind of hurts the eyes eventually.

---------------------------------
Found another closer to the beginning of the message. This one's a little different, though: ABA and the matching set is made up of 7 symbols, not just 5.

[^(,^^[;))^[^(,^^[
A3 = [^(,^^[
B3 = ;))^

--------------------------------
AA also exists:
[,^^[,^^
A4 = [,^^

--------------------------------
Some patterns return:
*@^;;{]@_;{*@^;;{ (ABA)
A5 = *@^;;
B5 = ]@_;{ = A2

---------------------------------

I don't have a clue on this message. I sent Conor an email with The Pearl as the subject to see if it gets through. Maybe this puzzle was deceptively simple and the long string of symbols means nothing...but i'll keep trying.

Actually....there must be a reason why Jerry, Glitch, and Crystal were specifically mentioned. There are at least two more people on this board (including me) that sent emails, not to mention those who aren't here...are we not trustworthy? I received the email that said I have a new set of instructions....

Glitch mentioned Steinbeck in the subject of his email, so I'm guessing that's why we got The Pearl quote. This is why I think this puzzle may be deceptively simple: the post says that this should be "no problem" for glitch.

Is there anything special in your emails, Jerry and Crystal?

Those symbols are hard on the eyes. I thought it might be easier if they were changed to letters. There are 23 unique symbols, I used A-W.

Code:
AABCDADEFAGDAHIJKHLAHAGHKGMFAJGANAGDAHILOLHDIHHL

PJJHLHDIHHLHJLDHLOJQLHDKLPJJHLPJJHLKKHLPJJHLPKLI

LKKHLOHKHLRKKLIHHLIHHJKKOLHHJOHKKLOHKHLHSHJILRKK

In case it will help others I have converted the string of characters to letters: Beat me to it by seconds Tips..

I'll try working on a simple sub, but I don't have a great track record...

EDIT: Is the string of characters above correct? The reason I ask is the double letter at the start - if this is right it's unlikely we're looking at a simple sub. There are hardly any words that start with a double letter...

EDIT 2: And if it's any other form of cypher we have the problem of converting the characters to letters first. It could by luck be Tips conversion above, but there's no guarantee of that.

Well, I'm not sure how much our friend Conor knows about me, but I got this an hour or two ago.

Quote:
Can you guess what my favorite programming language is?

I don't know if anyone else got this, but I do happen to know my code. Perl is obviously the knee jerk response, but I wonder if the hash at the bottom of the last post has something in it that's intregal to this.

I'll try e-mailing with PERL in the sub, but I'm not crossing my fingers.

(p.s. YAY! THEY LIKE ME! THEY REALLY LIKE ME!)

EDIT: I don't know why, but the vigenere cipher is standing out in my head reguarding that hash. Granted, with that we'd need to find the representative letters for the symbols, but it just struck me.

Yeah, I got the same email Glitch did. Unfortunately, I don't know coding very well at all. Sad I'd say give PERL a try, since there has to be a reason for using the quote from that particular book.

EDIT: As far as the meaning behind why Glitch, Crystal and I were picked out, while I can't say anything for Glitch or Crystal (though it's possible that Glitch was picked for his knowledge of code) I can say that my emails contained quite a bit of information. I've been studying conspiracies/alien abduction phenomena/UFOs practically from being able to read, so I know a thing or two about the subject. I guess I asked the kind of questions someone "in the know" would ask, and provided some info in a similar vein. So they're thinking I may be an "inside man" for the government. (This is IG, of course.) If there's some other reason for it, I honestly have no idea.
