[Meta] What the heck is going on in this game?

I got into this game because I happen to live in New York and the screening was here. Somehow I thought this game and story was more simplistic than it is. But it is complicated and the story is intriguing. Now that I am getting into it, I don't understand how it fits together at all.

I'm getting the feeling that we are missing some clues too, but I often feel that way about a game, so I can't tell if it is just me or the story. I noticed several references back to something in one of the videos - I caught the most recent post by Sun-Yi (keep making that Valentine) and she mentioned it as well.

So we have the missing boyfriend who was on his way to New York to get something done.

We have the mystery of Matt's father and grandfather both of whom die doing an army-related project

Now the army artifact finding agency is found by drizjr (good job)

And, then of course, there is all the monster hunter stuff.

With the old romantic comedy elements of Derek helping to find his ex-girlfriends boyfriend. And a creepy and cryptic German guy.

How does this all tie together? Any ideas?

If I were to make an educated guess at this time, I would venture that Matt's Dad & gramps were working with some doc who were performing manipulations on the human body, similar to but not quite like Jon Paine. Somehow, Matt is in possession of something of interest (probably in his Grampa's stuff) and since Matt & Derek are roommates, Derek gets involved "by accident" (per my guess at the storyline) but since Derek is into cryptids, it works in beautifully with the Host preview, etc.

We may possibly find an old doc running around (the Miller) who is still doing human mutative surgeries/treatments that he first learned to do back in Nam, Jon Paine visiting him for "the ultimate" modification, the N-a-r-a folks looking for some artifact that Matt's pages lead to, etc.

In otherwords, a complex, multi storied plot line that really looks great so far! (Kudos to the PMs)

Given what little I know of the storyline of The Host, I'd say that the strange cryptid creature from the vids is the result of some sort of military experimentation/chemical dumping that Matt's grandfather was involved in.

I don't know how Jon Paine fits in, although I like the idea that the body-mod doctor might be involved -- creating human-animal hybrids, perhaps? Although if Jon is faking his implant, what does that mean?

The Jon-Amie-Derek-SunYi quadrangle seems to be for character depth and emotional oomph. Derek's blog on MHC is full of Amie drama. He doesn't think very clearly when it comes to her, that's for sure.

This is all very intriguing so far. We have several well-done websites, lots of backstory, well-constructed puzzles, and swag. Speaking of backstory, I am grateful that Matt has decided to post transcripts of his grandfather's journal. My eyes thank you....

If you need catching up, www.thinginthewater.com (updated yesterday) has been doing a good job at keeping the details together and summarizing the storylines so far. I also sent the argnetcast a pretty detailed summary of events up to Sunday that they say they're turning into a post.

Anyway, the Jon Paine storyline seems to be the wildcard as far as things eventually tying together. We really haven't been able to contribute much to that either, except finding Gemalte Seele's email address. It's possible that "The Miller" has something to do with the Agent Yellow storyline (maybe he's Dr. G?), but since we still know so little about what Drs. T and G were up to, it's hard to say.

SPEC: connecting some dots...

I'm not sure where this goes, but I'll post here.

So, in her latest video blog, Sun-Yi says that she and Matt went to the library last weekend to "research Agent Yellow and that incident in Korea where they dumped formaldehyde into the river."

Through the magic of Google, I found the real-life incident in question (I find it hard to believe that websavvy college students would actually bother to go to an old-fashioned library, but I suppose that was necessary for story-related reasons[/meta]). Apparently, in 2000, a U.S. army civilian who worked at a morgue in South Korea ordered subordinates to dump 120 liters of formaldehyde (embalming fluid) into a drain that leads eventually to the Han River. This caused a huge uproar in Korea and inflamed anti-American sentiment. One account of the incident can be found here.

So, having read this, I was reminded of Journal Entry #14 from Rainbow of Death, in which Dr. T tells Matt's grandfather how he got a cleaning girl drunk and she told him, among other things, that "there were... bodies on tables, covered in sheets" in Dr. Genero's secret lab. Sounds an awful like a morgue, doesn't it?

My final thought involves the plot of The Host, so I'm putting that in spoilertext in case people don't want to be spoiled about the movie.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
According to the reviews that I've read [here and here, for instance], the entire premise of The Host is based on this real-life incident of the formaldehyde dumping. The dumping of toxic chemicals by the American military into the Han River apparently helps create the central monster of the movie.

EDIT: According to the Wikipedia page on The Host, "the chemical agent used by the American military to combat the monster in the end is named "Agent Yellow" in a thinly veiled reference to Agent Orange"
So wouldn't Sun-Yi know this, and wouldn't she be able to make the connection to Matt's 'Agent Yellow' from Rainbow of Death?

So perhaps if we believe that the dumping has been going on for a long time at various places around the world (e.g., Operation CHASE), this can explain various kinds of strange creatures popping up all over...

ETA: new detail about The Host.
