Maybe, but Jon's supposed to be a "mutant" right? Perhaps the viscosity of his blood is different from us regular humans. Wink

Embarassed Yes! But only because I was so very impressed with the armoured fish.

Derek's latest forum post calls attention to the video, so it seems there must be something there for us to discover. I can't make out enough detail on the plans, though, to actually tell if there's anything there. Amie referred to looking at them for clues, so maybe we could encourage her to post better scans like Matt did with the Golden Dragon.

There's a flashing shape on the black object at the bottom, could that be morse? There isn't any flashing light in the video itself, just the flashed images, so why would this flash?

There seem to be two lights, the bottom one is seen only in a few shots. Both are flashing at a constant rate- no morse there. If anything the inserted drawings might break up the flashes. But that's a stretch.

The light at the end of the tunnel is really a train

I just don't know what to think.

Thanks to a friend named Crystal, I discovered that Painted Soul, a.k.a. GemalteSeele, does indeed exist at gemalteseele[@]gmail.com. I wrote him a message:

Quote:
Dear Painted Soul,

Someone emailed me and said that you've been in touch with my boyfriend, Jon Paine, since the Berlin convention. I've been fairly frantic about his whereabouts since I haven't heard anything from him since his note on the convention guest book. Can you please let me know where he is, where he's going, anything at all? I've been so worried about him, and I'm particularly worried about the wound on his arm from the PDA implant. He still needed heavy bandages on it as of the end of November and was having some concerns about keloids. And if you talk to him, for God's sake please tell him to get in touch with me!

Thanks so much for anything you can tell me,
Amie Adams

www.enhanceyourself.org

This morning I heard back:

Quote:
Amie, the things I know about you.

Herr Paine was rather, hmm, loquacious, shall we say, when imbibing certain of the more powerful varieties of German drink. I'd love to see the one piece of body art he described so vividly, which he claims assumes an almost mystical appearance when you . . . oh well, I should stop. You are blushing, where the ink allows your self to shine through.

Since I already feel as if I know you so well, let me tell you a secret. Or perhaps more accurately, let you know that there is one we share. For with somewhat drunken revelry comes not only verbal but also sometimes physical tomfoolery as well. Alcohol-induced wrestling is one of the Germanic customs that I fully appreciate and I was ecstatic to learn that Jon did too. In the course of one of our spontaneous tussles the bandages Jon wears around his arm came loose and I saw beneath.
So worry if you will about his lack of contact and the uncertainty regarding his current whereabouts, but there's no need to pretend his arm is a concern. Verstehen sie?

Upon the polite yet insistent prodding from a few more of Jon's friends I am attempting to see if I might learn more about where he went after departing London, and I will be sure to keep you abreast of that effort too.

Enhance yourself, indeed.

I am the Painted Soul.

Now just what in the nine hells does that mean, "there's no need to pretend his arm is a concern"? Jon was going through a lot of post-procedural care with careful bandaging there to make sure that the keloid didn't continue to develop. That was one of his biggest fears, the morning he left for the implant, and I remember crying when he left because I wished I could be there to hold his hand. Well, his other hand. But he said the doctor insisted on a sterile workspace and I had just gotten over a stomach virus.

But I digress. The Painted Soul talks pretty, but what truth is in his words? I guess I'll just sit here, running my nerves on the cheese grater, until I hear further news. At least I've got Derek to keep me sane.

I talked to him on Wednesday, Derek. Every time I speak to him I feel little prickles of optimism crawling up my spine. Could it just be wishful thinking? Projecting? Dreaming? I'm not sure; don't care. All I know is that his encouragement, plus the helpful email I've been getting from the site readership, have almost turned me around from feeling like a whipped cur to feeling like we might actually be able to find something. I'm heading out soon for NYC, gonna spend some good sleuthing time with the monster hunting wonder and get this mess sorted out once and for all.

No word back from Jon's address.

Does it sound to anyone else like he may never have gotten the implant at all?

That's one possible interpretation, but since PS is all zen on us, who knows what he means.

For that to be true, we would have to have some way of showing that the arm in the video is not Jon's. Derek and Amie have both suggested there's something we haven't discovered about the video, and since the plans aren't exactly legible, maybe there's some tell-tale mark that's missing on the video arm. I looked through Jon's gallery, and there aren't many clear shots of his arm. The only difference I can tell is that Jon's arm appears to be hairier, but that's not much to go on.

update

Amie has arrived -- I'm assuming she was picked up at the airport last night by Derek.

Quote:
I wonder if Denmark smells like cheese

Hello from the east coast, youse guys.

So what the hell was that email from "Jon" the other day, anyway? At first I thought it was the stupid site troll, hacking into the mail account, and I blew it off. I'm not so sure, now. I don't think he has the guts to get that extreme of an implant, for one thing. Something sure as hell smells rotten around here. Why would Jon, after being gone for over two months, suddenly decide to get in touch with me right after I finally reached my wits' end and got in touch with Derek? Is someone watching me, choosing their actions depending on what I do? Damn, I hate this. And GemalteSeele's little cryptic jabs? Hate that, too.

What's worse is that if someone is watching me, could I have already put Derek in danger by coming to see him? Maybe this isn't such a good idea after all. I mean, between the weird shit going down and the way I just up and left Derek for Jon, could there possibly be a happy ending here? The drama quotient is very high with this one… probably didn't help that I fell asleep in Derek's roommate's bed last night, either.

But then again, I was just spinning my wheels on my own, and I can't spend the rest of my life waiting to hear the key turn in the lock and Jon say, "Hey, babe!" as he walks in. Straining my ears for that would strain my heart for too long.

She's talking a lot about hacking the site and tracing IP addresses to determine who sent the last video from Jon's account -- something we could probably actually do if she forwards us the message header information.

[update] Start spreading the news

Start spreading the news
How can two gigantic U.S. cities feel so different? Age? Land mass? Climate? Who knows? Here I am in New York, safe and sound. Derek and I are already making good headway, I think. He's really a boy wonder at massaging search results. Too bad he can't get paid for that kind of thing… he'd make a mint.

So there may (may) be a chance that Jon was actually in New York after leaving Berlin and London. That's insanely exciting news, and the best lead I've had since he signed the guest book in December. More details on that later. Derek also found the name of a doctor, Miller, who people say is paying body modders for various procedures. Jon was intensely interested in hooking up with doctors who were into the scene, and I'm sure that if he heard about this guy, he'd make a beeline for him. So that's another lead to follow up on. And one of the local scene guys had the same reaction to the implant video that I saw back west… laughter. A little pity. I'm starting to lose my happy thoughts about that.

And yes, there has been some drama, but not anything too serious. Apparently Derek's mom heard about my impending visit and went apoplectic. Nothing unusual there. The poor woman probably thought she was rid of me for good years ago. Also, Derek's got this little girl friend who's got a fierce crush on him (does he not know or is he just burying his head in the sand? inquiring minds want to know) and she was understandably taken aback at finding me in close proximity to Derek on the Holiest of Holy Days of Romance. Man, I felt pretty bad about that, but what the hell was I going to do? Put off my trip another week? Don't think so. But maybe it's not that big a deal since the other night when I crashed in Matt's bed, he ended up sleeping over there in the chica's room (supposedly in the roomie's bed, uh huh).

Tonight I'm just going to get a big damn New York pizza and devour it and watch public access television and try not to think about anything. And probably fail, but at least I will have tried. Because I have some serious thinking to do.

Oh man. The return of Mom. I love Mom as a character, but then, of course, I would. (for people who didn't play who is benjamin stove, his Mom - forumname Mom. would post to the in-game forum whenever her son was lost or misbehaving, very funny stuff.)

I wouldn't call Sun-Yi a "little girl friend" and hope to get away with it. She is smart, beautiful and very capable of taking care of herself.

I wonder if this is a hint? Public access television in New York is painful to watch much of the time - I can't see anyone voluntarily watching it unless it featured a friend or relative. Smile

[update] Serenity now! Serenity now!

Serenity now! Serenity now!

I think I should go get my blood pressure checked. Have you noticed that you can't find those damned blood pressure machines in the drug stores anymore? I wonder if one of them trapped some hapless nice old lady one night at closing time in the drug store and she was left to try to gnaw off her arm all night to escape or something.

Am I avoiding the subject? Yes, I am. Because it makes my head pound and sour acid shoot into my stomach. Because what the hell was he thinking? Did he think people wouldn't find out? All that frigging publicity, all those GREAT BIG ANNOUNCEMENTS for something that was smoke and mirrors.

Hold on, Amie, back up.

I am trying to come to terms with the fact that Jon apparently deceived the rest of the free world with his supposed PDA implant. It's a little more difficult to accept the fact that he strung me along, too. Lots of talk about "partners" and "soul mates" and "two halves of one whole" were apparently just a load of shit. Jon never got that implant, did he? And just what else might he have kept from me as well? I have spent every waking hour of the last two months worried sick over him, and now I'm not sure of anything anymore. And the worst part is all the times I stuck up for his ass and put myself and my own reputation on the line for a fraud. Yeah, that's the way to win friends and influence people, babe. Nice one! Did he really think nobody would find out? That just fucking floors me. I still want to find him, although at this point I'm more likely to wrap my hands around his neck than wrap my arms around his torso. I want him to look me in the eyes and explain to me why he sought to ruin himself and drag me along with him.

So to that end, Derek and I have been busy spending every free minute trying to track the son of a bitch, I mean, Jon down. This weekend we went to his library and ended up running into his roommate and the chick with the crush on Derek, Sun-Yi. She's one of those beautiful people who just has it all, isn't she? Looks, brains, personality. Born with the silver DNA in her mouth. I'm sure anything she wants, she gets with a flick of the wrist. Forget about real pain… she's just got a charmed life. If this were an 80s movie she'd be one of the richies. Really perfect for Derek, though. He's always got that safety net, doesn't he? The money for an education and a big dorm suite and all the toys he ever wanted; a mom who dotes on him; a "serious" club about cryptozoology with a ridiculous name, and a gorgeous exotic woman who worships the ground he walks on. For Derek, it's all roses, no matter how difficult he thinks he's got it, but how in the hell do you get someone to appreciate what they have? You just don't – they don't realize it until they don't have it anymore, and that means heartbreak and shattered dreams. Not something I wish for him, but I guess I can allow myself the luxury of stewing in my own bitter juices for a while. Just for a little while, though. Because the opposite side of total obliviousness is despair, and to tell you the truth I'm pretty frigging sick of despair.

Speaking of despair, have you ever gotten lost in New York? Silly me, I thought all of Manhattan was nice and orderly with the big blocks and little blocks and streets and avenues and shit, but apparently at some point going south whoever laid things out just said, "Haha, I'm sick of this organization crap! Let's just really screw with people and make streets go all over the damned place and then we can just stand back and laugh at them when they look confused! Okay? Go!" Yeah, so anyway, I got hopelessly lost downtown and had been so cocky that morning that I decided not to bring my little tourist map along with me. I called up Derek who did some buddy beacon thing with my Helio Drift that I didn't even realize I had, cool, but I didn't think he had a Drift, either, so that tells you what I know, which is jack. Maybe he borrowed one or something.

For all the legwork we've done around the city, it's just been a litany of negatives. No contact, no clues at any of the tat joints we've been to. I did hear back from the Oy Gevalt guy again (I really can't help coming up with nicknames for Ol' Painted Soul; it's just too easy) and he said something about a local contact, so I guess that's next on the agenda. In the meantime, deep breaths, Amie. This too shall pass.

OK, I need a bit of explanation here. This would be the implant with the blue LED lights, yes?

the only thing, I can think of ndemeter is that Amie has come to the understanding that Jon has lied to her and faked the implant. Which seems to be a common theme among cryptid sightings not to mention that it was said somewhere that Jon was somewhat of an expert at the art of illusion. (In the end they appear to be or are really just good fakes.)

I hope that sounded right. I know what I'm trying to say, I just don't know if I said it right.
