Hmm.

I don't think you should be focusing too much on the "Composure ?" part of the picture. I just think it's there to be mysterious and frankly because this is some form of code and not actual music, so it can't be attributed to a known composer.

Wether or not it's Bacon cipher I have no clue about, but it's the best real guess I've seen so far.

I'm more than willing to spend a few thousand credit on guessing this (yes I have that many, the "benefit" of hanging back during code breaking while secretly working on things to rule the world with), but I'd appriciate a prioritized bruteforce list to go by if I have to Wink

Got the folloiwng email from ADPrince....I'm following it up with Foo to find out what's going on.

Quote:
ADPrince says: Special Agent foo has made some progress with composure. Ask him to fill you in on his progress.

Let me know your best leads on typo and I will requisition a special cross-reference.

UPDATE! SteveMids' method of solve was mostly confirmed by Foo...looks like the transcription of notes will have to be updated accordingly.

Quote:
Foo says: Agent SteveMids suggested that the task may have something to do with a substitution cipher. I have also been endeavoring to solve this task myself and following the logic of a substitution cipher as he says, the notes in this task are ABCDEFG in four various combinations each. I am now trying different combinations to see if any of them reveal an intelligible message. Let me know what you find.

Double-posting, but I think this warrants it. I retranscribed to include the LENGTH of the notes (2 is half note, 4 is quarter note, 8 is eighth note, 16 is sixteenth note). I'm not sure about some of them b/c of bad vision on my part and improper measure lengths, but I put an asterix near where there are problems. I'll try to put up a haphazardly assigned find/replace system for it soon, edited back in here.

Quote:
---(A4)(A2)(E8)|(D4)(A8)(B8)(E8)(E8)(A4)|(A2)(E16)(D4)(D16)(A16)|(E8)(E16)
---(F4)(A8)(A4)(D4)|(A4)(G4)(G8)(A16)(B16)(G4)|(E4)(A8)(F4)(A8)(A4)|(D4)(A4)(G4)(G16)(A16)
---(B16)(D4)(B8)(A16)(D4)(A4)|(A2)(E16)(D4)(B4)(A16)|(D4)(D8)(A4)(A2)|(E16)(D4)(B4)(A16)(E4)
---(E16)(F4)(A8)(A4)(D4)|(A4)(G4)(G8)(A16)(F16)(E8)|(A4)(A4)(D16)(F4)|(A8)(A4)(D4)
---(A4)(G4)(G8*)(A16)(F16)(B8)|(D4)(F16)(B8)(D16)(A4)|(B2)(A16)(G8)(D16)(E16)
---(D4)(E16)(A2)(E16)|(D4)(D2)|(A2)(A8)(E16)(D4)(E16)|(E4)(B2)(B8)|(F16)(F4)(E16)(D4)(F4)
---(A8)(A16)(G8)(F4)(A8)(E16)(F8)|(A4)(A4)(G8)(E4)|(E4)(B4)|(A8)(E16)(D4)(E16)(A16)(G8*)(D16)(B8)
---(E4)(E16)(D4)|(A2)(E16)(F4)(A8*)(E16)|(F16)(A16)(B8)(D4)(D2*)|(C4)(A4)(E16)(E16)(G8)(F4)
---(A4)(D16)(E16)(B2)|(A16)(E16*)(D4)(A4)(D4)|(B16)(E4)(G4)(B4)
---(A4)(G8)(G16)(D4)(E16)(E16)|(G2)

A4 is repeated twice in two locations
E8 is repeated twice in one location
E16 is repeated twice in one location

FIRST EDIT: damn, had to disable smilies because of 8)

SECOND EDIT: As promised, the code converted to letters for frequency analysis. I used the system half notes=A to H, quarter notes = I to N, etc. Because there were more notes than letters, I assigned F16=C and G16=E (two notes that didn't normally show up using my aforementioned system.

And here we go.

Quote:
---HAS|KOPSSH|AZKYV|SZ
---MOHK|HNUVWN|LOMOH|KHNEV
---WKPVKH|AZKIV|KRHA|ZKIVL
---ZMOHK|HNUVCS|HHYM|OHK
---HN(U*)VCP|KCPYH|BVUYZ
---KZAZ|KD|AOZKZ|LBP|CMZKM
---OVUMOZT|HHUL|LI|OZKZV(U*)YP
---LZK|AZM(O*)Z|CVPK(D*)|JHZZUM
---HYZB|V(Z*)KHK|WLNI
---HUEKZZ|G

Thus, H appears twice in a row two times
And S appears twice in a row once
And Z appears twice in a row once

THIRD EDIT -- Frequency Analysis attached

Answers that are not it

Here's the ones I tried so far and they do not work.

Elgar
Edward Elgar
Sir Edward Elgar
Anthony Payne

Which is too bad because Elgar's 3rd symphony would fit this puzzle nicely as far as the fact that he loved puzzles and coding things into his music. Anthony Payne is the composer that completed Elgar's 3rd symphony after Edward Elgar passed away with it unfinished.

Partial Solve:

Using the system A16=A, B16=B ..... I decoded the following message. Some of it was lost in translation because I suck at reading those tiny notes, but it's obviously a quote. I added spaces for clarity.

Quote:
OVER HILL OVER DALE
THOROUN A BUSH THOROUG A
BRIAR OVER PARK OVER PAS
E THOROUN A FLOOD THOR
OUN A FIRF I DO|WANDE
R EVERYVHERE SWIFTER T
HAN THE MOONS SPHERE A(G8*)D I
SERVE T(A8*)E FAIR(D2*) QOEEN T
ODEW|A(E16*)ROR|BSUP
ONGREE|(G2)

This is a quote from Shakespeare's "Midsummer Night's Dream", as shown below.
Quote:
Over hill, over dale,
Through bush, through briar,
Over park, over pale,
Through blood, through fire,
I do wander everywhere,
Swifter than the moone's sphere;
And I serve the fairy queen,
To dew her orbs upon the green.

However, neither "Shakespeare" nor "William Shakespeare" worked when I tried them.

I then tried the composer Vaughan Williams for his musical rendition of the famous Shakespearian quote....that also didn't work.

So it's not:
Quote:
Shakespeare, William Shakespeare, OR Vaughan Williams

And that wipes out my credits for attempts for a while.

However, if anyone wants to risk it I'm willing to bet the answer is
FELIX MENDELSSOHN (or maybe just MENDELSSOHN)-- his Symphony No. 3 was entitled "A Midsummer Night's Dream".

EDIT: I apparently found a bug with one of my guesses but was refunded the points and I got a neat apology email.

According to wikipedia of the opera version of a the play:

Benjamin Britten's A Midsummer Night's Dream is an opera set to a libretto adapted by the composer and Peter Pears from William Shakespeare's play of the same title. It was premiered on 11 June 1960 at the Aldeburgh Festival, conducted by the composer.

Maybe Britten or Pears is the answer?

Very nice decoding work notgordian!

I had extra credits, so I did try the full name. It works.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Felix Mendelssohn is accepted.

Thank goodness....good work Trent. I was not looking forward to throwing around tons of guesses at 350 credits per pop again. That means the only unsolved puzzle is Audiophile!

Composure new answer?

Hey! I just joined the forum and deuscity. I lurked on the boards over at save my husband and someone suggested deus as a good ARG to keep going on. I've created an account with them and have read the boards and wiki, so I think I'm pretty up to speed, but I'm stuck on composure.

This thread and the wiki gives an answer to the puzzle - Felix Mendelssohn, but the answer isn't working any longer. Neither is Mendelssohn. I even tried shakespeare again. The sheet of music is identical to the jpeg in the wiki.

The wiki says "This puzzle contains only an image and a space for an answer at the bottom of the page." But now there's a block of text -

"We have intercepted an unchipped courier from an unexpected source: The western wasteland. With a little pressure the man revealed his intent was to hack into a secure data file with the password he claims is hidden within the documents he carried. Unfortunately the subject did not survive initial interrogation, so we have been left with no way to identify his real target or the password itself. Identify this password for us and perhaps we can cross-reference our government databases to determine what the target really was."

Mendelssohn still makes sense! Does anyone know what might have changed? I'd hate to waste another 1200 credits if i'm just entering some text wrong.

Thanks for the hint about deus city, it's a great game, and any advice you have...

Some variation of "Felix Mendelssohn" should still be the answer, as nothing has changed. For that reason, you should send a private message to DeusCityBugs and/or email interfacebugsSPLATdefense-corp.com -- it's possible when they transferred over to the new appearance something went buggy.
