[HS] Email from Mabel

Just got this about 10 minutes ago.

All men must show their cards when called
Even kings, even Barons.

Will you flip the coin?
Which way will you tip the balance?
Perhaps this will help you decide.

So I went to the boat website and checked out the rules and look what I found in the source.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The young bull calf would be more commonly known as a steer, but again, I think this also refers to a castrated animal.

Also, "Walking in the Air" might refer to "Snowman" as well...maybe...hell, who knows?

Sooo...at this point, we have

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
www.boattournament.com/------ns.html

Does that sound about right to everyone? I left out the ones that were at all questionable, or had more than one possible answer.

I tried jpbssbns to no avail.

Thanks...yeah, I was up too late last night..lol!

No babies yet, btw... Rolling Eyes

eta~ I wonder if Mabels message to us on the email meant anything...something along the line of how she first revealed her blog site in the package we all received.

Incidentally, I was going to keep a running list of the letter combos that didn't work, but I dunno how that will be helpful at this point..lol!

The bold text is mine. Does anyone know what this means? I tried finding words using the first letters in a poker deck (ace, king, queen, etc), and the longest words I could find were 6 letters...assent, attest, fasten, fatten. I don't know if I'm reading this totally wrong, but I do think it means more than just showing us the .html clue.

Longest word with the cards first letters
To me that's the clue to help with the answers from the source, i.e. all the answers will start with the first letters of cards...

Including the numbers :
AEO FJKNQST

EDIT: Just so the above is clear it would go AOTTFFSSENTJQK
on that thinking, with some additions of my own:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Anubis---------Anubis/ Egyptian/ Jackal
a handgun--------------Firearm
what it shoots----------Ammo
a young bull------------Steer
"Walking in the Air"----Song/ Snowman/ The Snowman
it carries your lunch---Sack (I reckon this should be a vowel?)
battery - Cad----------Ni
puck slapper-----------Stick
the Warner sister------. (Dot)
hydrogen --------------H
served at 4:00---------Tea
cow sound--------------Moo
Chicago railway--------L

still a bit of work to be done here then Confused

EDIT 2: Okies my theory about the words only starting with the first letters could be wrong. I tried a different approach, using a crossword solver on ------ns. There were 3 words left that contained only the letters above: festoons, nankeens, and stetsons (I was sooo sure that last one would be it) but no luck.

I'm pretty sure I'm on the right track, but I still haven't got it. Hopefully this will get someone else going.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Each one is a clue to a card nickname.

Anubis------------------Jack (jackal) or K9 (dog)
a handgun--------------Fours (Colt .44)
what it shoots----------Aces (Bullets)
a young bull------------Kings (Cowboys...get it)
"Walking in the Air"----Eight (Snowman)
it carries your lunch---Three (Trey)
battery - Cad----------Five (Nickel)
puck slapper-----------Seven (Hockey Stick)
the Warner sister------. (Dot)
hydrogen --------------H
served at 4:00---------Tea
cow sound--------------Moo
Chicago railway--------L

Someone might want to double check me by entering in the first letter of each card, but I couldn't get it to work. This has to be close to a solve though.

I think you answered my earlier question about the meaning of the sentance from the Jamaican guy in my earlier post. I think you are on the right track, but I've been playing with both letters and numbers, and I've not found anything yet...but I'm sure it's right there...

well I don't think it's gonna be nonsense from the letters

Rules of Boat
Intro
As the long-standing traditional game of Parare City, Boat is an exciting variant of poker, designed to allow players to have influence over the contents of other player's hands.

Boat is a betting game, so the ultimate goal is to win your opponent's money! To do this, you build the best hand you can by purchasing cards from the Boat.

How to Play
Boat is best played with 4-6 players. It uses a standard deck, with no jokers.

To begin a round, each player must pay the ante, which is the initial bet required to participate in the round. The antes are added to the pot, which is the money the winner of the round will recieve. Everybody is then dealt two cards, and five cards are dealt face up to the center of the table. The two cards dealt to you are your hand, and are kept secret from the other players. The five cards dealt to the table are the Boat, and are visible to everyone. You will build your hand by purchasing cards from the Boat, which we'll discuss later.

After the cards have been dealt, the first round of betting takes place.

Each player in turn will either fold, raise, or call.

Fold: When a player folds, they drop out of the round, and lose all money they have bet so far that round. If a player feels their hand is not likely to win, this is a good option to avoid losing any more money.

Raise: To raise, a player adds more money to the pot. All other players must then match that amount to stay in the round.

Call: If a player wishes to remain in the round, but does not wish to raise, they will add enough money to the pot to match the highest bet. If you call, and a player after you raises, then you will have to call again, to match the hightest bet.

When every player has either folded or called, the betting round ends and the purchasing round begins.

Beginning with the player who started the betting round, or the first player to their left still in if they folded, each player will buy a card from the boat.

To purchase a card, the player must place one chip on each card to the left of the card they take.

When a card is taken, the cards to its right are moved down to take its place, and a new card is dealt into the 5 place. When you take a card that has chips on it, you also take those chips. They're yours to keep! Purchased cards are kept face up in front of you.

After the last player has purchased their card, the Boat is not refilled until the next purchasing round. Then there is another bidding round, followed by another purchasing round. Play continues until all players have five cards: two in their hand, and three on the table. There is then a final round of betting, after which all remaining players reveal their cards. The player with the best hand wins the pot, plus any chips remaining in the boat. A new round then begins, starting one player to the left.

If a player goes all in (bet their last chip or put their last chip on the Boat), then any additional betting is regarded as a side bet between the other players. That player can't buy cards from the Boat unless they gain chips from the Boat after going all in. If they lose the hand, these extra chips are given to the house.

Hand Values (Lowest to Highest)
High Card
This hand is only worth as much as its highest card.

Pair
Two cards of the same value.

Two Pair
Two pairs. Shocking, isn't it?

Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same value.

Straight
All five cards are sequential in value. For example, 7, 8, 9, 10, J. The cards' suits are irrelevant.

Flush
Five cards of the same suit.

Full house
Three of a Kind and a Pair.

Four of a Kind
All four cards of the same value.

Straight Flush
A straight in which all the cards are the same suit.

Royal Flush
The highest possible Straight Flush, consisting of the 10, J, Q, K, and A of the same suit.

I like where ilikepucks' idea is going. Here is what I am thinking, maybe it will jostle someone else's mind.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Maybe we are supposed to use the full set of cards. For example a gun shoots bullets, or two aces?

Anubis------------------Jack (jackal) or K9 (dog)
a handgun--------------Fours (Colt .44) -- Maybe a 54 as in a Colt .45
what it shoots----------Aces (Bullets) -- two aces maybe?
a young bull------------Kings (Cowboys...get it) -- The problem I have with this one is that a cow is female, and a bull is male, even though cowboys are male. How about a maverick (QJ)?. <-- Updated
"Walking in the Air"----Eight (Snowman)
it carries your lunch---Three (Trey)
battery - Cad----------Five (Nickel)
puck slapper-----------Seven (Hockey Stick)

I have tried several combinations but have come up short.

what it shoots----------Bullets -A
a young bull?------------Cow..Boy (notice the ?) - K
"Walking in the Air"----Snowman - E
it carries your lunch---Three (Trey) - T
battery - Cad----------Nickel 5 - F
puck slapper-----------Hockey Stick - S

well done Shady!

Why the extra 2 letters? just to make it hard or is JK a hint to sthg else? Otherwise I think it kinda sucked.

BTW you need to be logged into the tournie to see the page.

EDIT: There's a scrap of coding, which means nada to me, although I guess it implies Baron is cheating. I'm not sure if there's a puzzle there too, as the Submit field allows an entry, and the button works.

FWIW the cards are:
JH - 6C - QS - 2S
7H - 8S - ? - 7S
3D - 10S - 4C - 3S
KD - 2H - 5D - AD

No idea about the extra 2 letters, could be hint to something else.

I downloaded the javascript stuff from the source code page as I couldn't see anything else...OMG what on earth...don't think this is relevant though.

I'm assuming the page with the Baron stuff is another puzzle? When I put something random in and hit submit, I got back the following:
"Invalid code. Valid code must be entered within an hour."
