Q: Geographical location
Is it important?

I'm completely new to ARG, and before I get into things I'd like to ask about the geographical location of ARGs. I couldn't find any information on the subject during a relatively quick search.

My question is basically, is my geographical location important to what ARGs I can participate in? I'm located in Norway. Do I have to expect long travels, or are most ARGs independent of such things? I can't seem to find any list that categorizes ARGs by location or region.

Any clarifications would be helpful Smile

Hi, and welcome to Unfiction! Smile

Most ARGs can be played completely online -- they're collaborative, so if there's a live event and it's not in your area, you can generally rely on other players to attend and let you know what happened. But generally the bulk of what happens occurs over the internet, and is therefore accessible regardless of where you live.

Of course, you might incur additional international calling charges for calling phone numbers in the game, or things like that, but in general, other than the live events and the fact that updates for, say, a U.S.-based game might occur while you're asleep, you should be able to play just like anyone else.

And, as ARGs become more popular, the chances of a game based closer to you increase. Wink

Thanks for the reply Phaedra. It explains things.

ARGs caught my attention as I read the story of the finding of the cube in Perplex City. The end-game was specifically tied to a geographical location, hence my "worries". From an outside point of view, the idea of being able to make (relatively) short travels and experience live events certainly seems like one of the more fascinating aspects of ARGs.

After reading your post I went ahead to try umedia, but earlier clues on feelbelieve.com were gone after an announcement of a possible live event, and the umedia trailhead seemed quite dead after the live event was missed or not happening. This all from a beginners point of view at least.

So, perhaps I'll give Deus City a shot instead. However, it doesn't appear to really have started yet. Reading it again, it's actually your post in this thread. That's some months ago, so things may have changed Smile

To revisit my earlier post and the idea of posting it here. As a beginner, I feel the factor of geographical location should be a part of a player tutorial. In my case, it was the first thing on my mind, and certainly not the first I could find an aswer to.

Deus City is definitely in gear...although the jury is still out on whether or not it constitutes an ARG. Either way, I'm still playing it. (They started earlier than they originally planned).

There are a lot of ARGs going on in various stages...browse the "ARGs with Potential" and "News and Rumors" sections to find out about active games. Some of the big ones that came out recently seem to be Monster Hunter Club ("The Host" promo), MeiGeist, Studio Cypher, and "Year Zero" (NIN promo).

There's a lot more going on that I didn't mention...in general, ask around to get a general idea of the feel for games going on in the threads here, in IRC, or by checking out ARGNet

Heh, I just posted a more updated post of currently-running ARGs, which I'll just quote here:

Welcome to Unfiction!

You're actually posting in a thread for a game that's been over for more than two years, but there are plenty of games currently going on:

First, for a quick visual representation of popular, currently-running games, it's always good to check the "what's hot" feature at ARGNet.

  • Studio Cypher is producing pay-to-play mini-args, or "chapters" in a "multi-player novel." Chapter 4 is just getting started, so you're right on time. (You don't need to have played the previous chapters to play.) I believe the cost for playing is $9.99.
  • If you were intrigued by ILB, like dystopian sci-fi, or are a Nine Inch Nails fan, Year Zero is rumored to be produced by the team behind ILB, 42 Entertainment. Catch up on the thread here, or watch ARGN for an article coming soon.
  • Monster Hunter Club recently launched as a promotion for the movie The Host. The ARGNet article gives a summary and also provides links to resources such as an official blog to help you catch up quickly. Trailhead thread here.
  • The Committee of the Sedulous Amalgamation appears poised to move from pre-game to a more active stage, and uses a lot of snail-mail, which is always fun. The ARGNet article describes it more fully. Trailhead thread here.
  • Meigeist is a corporate-produced ARG that players have been very pleased with. It hasn't been going that long. There's a guest ARGNet article here that summarizes the most recent developments, as well as an older introductory article here. The game's forum is here.
  • If you like horror, you might be interested in The Human Pet, which appears to be conducting itself with a certain black-humoured aplomb. UF discussion is here and ARGNet coverage is here.
  • Doom Skull has been described as an "ARG with training wheels" -- the puzzles and story are fairly simple, and an in-game guide makes it easy to catch up. UF discussion is here, and ARGNet coverage is here .
  • NBC is doing Heroes 360 in connection with the show Heroes, but it doesn't really seem to be a full-fledged ARG. ARGNet coverage is here, UF discussion is here.
  • Finally, if you liked I Love Bees, 42 Entertainment (the company behind it) recently put out Cathy's Book, which is sort of an ARG-in-a-book. ARGNet coverage here.

Hope you find a game that suits you and have a great first-ARG experience!

Perplex City did end up being tied to a geographical location, yes, but it was as much a contest/treasure hunt as it was an ARG -- searching for a hidden physical object to get prize money is the exception rather than the rule in ARGs. As I noted, there are often live events, but generally they're not essential to enjoying the games.

Anyway, hope you find something you like! Smile

In addition to what Phae posted above, you could say that besides being a treasurehunt for the cube, PerplexCity also had a lot of ARGish components, which could be played from all over the world, because they were mostly webbased.

Then there were the puzzlecards, which you had to physically possess to participate in the leaderboard competition, but could be ordered from all over the world essentially.

PXC also had a couple of live-events, which were mostly in the UK and in San Fransisco, so yeah, in that area us European-mainlanders haven't been too lucky up till now (but the more Europeans start playing ARGs, the more attention we will hopefully get Wink)

This thread in the META section also touched this subject for a bit.
