I just logged in as Thomas and there's only one PM in his box:

Quote:
subject: some more help

http://www.mindquirk.com/apps/espionage/index.htm

and his signature is currently "it's in your hands now."

Last night Thomas sent me an email. ( I broke up the code to not break the forum).

The link that Thomas left in his PM, http://www.mindquirk.com/apps/espionage/index.htm is for Mac. I had a friend download the Espionage program and run the code. It says just this:

Quote:
Help. We need to get the story out. The notes played lead to a directory on the site... We really don't have much time left, and we need as much help as we can get. You are our last hope. Please... find out the truth.

EDIT apparently mIRC only showed my friend part of the code, and now that he has looked here at the thread, he said he saw more of the code, and ran the entire thing, giving us more of a message.

mIRC cuts off text at an arbitrary number of characters, so I'm not surprised. If he doesn't let you know before I get home, I can use my girlfriend's laptop and post the whole thing.

Also I can get her to listen to the .wav - she's a music major, maybe she'll have some input.

No, the edit was to add the rest of the decoded file. At first, we just had "Help. Please... find out the truth."

ETA - having your girlfriend listen to the .wav file(s) would be very helpful. Thanks!

Tipsila is dragging me towards this game Wink . So far seems like great fun.

For now, we played with fodder.gif, changed the extension to .mp3, took the resulting audio, reversed it, slowed it and filtered some noise.

Here's the result. I could swear it says something about a password at the end:
fodder.mp3

I'd forgotten that my girlfriend can listen to things at work. Very Happy Here's what she says:

Quote:
See, here's the thing. If I had the starting pitch, I could tell you what the notes are and give you a transcription of the rhythm (I've got that and the intervals already), but until I can get the starting pitch, I don't have it.

Okay, here's something: if this was played on all white keys of the piano (and that's a reach, but I'm figuring it's because he's trying to spell something and sharps and flats wouldn't cut it) then it would have to be either ceddeedeeed or faggaagaaag or gbaabbabbba.

The intervals (I'm pretty sure) are -m6, +m7, -P8, +M2, U, -M2, +M2, U, U, -M2

The rhythm (I'm pretty sure) is quarter, quarter, quarter, quarter, dotted eighth, sixteenth, eighth, eighth tied to another eighth, eighth, quarter eighth rest].

I can get the whole thing transcribed for you in approximately 5 minutes when we get home and I can play it on my clarinet.

Oh - and [aninterloper's] analysis? Is more correct if you play it backwards. Sort of.

I'll be asking her about the intervals (I'm not sure what she means there. it's probably esoteric and complicated, knowing her.) and I'll update with a transcription, if she does get around to it when we get home. No promises, though, tonight's D&D.

But I thought that was enough to go on with.

Oh, yeah, I totally forgot to say that I was playing it backwards, since the audio was obviously reversed. Nice catch. Also, I'm totally not musically inclined: I did my stuff by playing a note and playing a portion of the file until they matched up.

Embarassed I wasn't sure about posting that part, I didn't want to step on any toes. I'm sorry. :/

this is what wiki has to say about intervals. I've attached what my girlfriend told me, as it's a little long.

Don't worry, all toes are safe and intact. Cool

Notes.mp3

My lovely friend Tipsila has been feeding me some puzzles one of which was the noted.mp3 you are discussing here. If you reverse the audio you can clearly hear all of the notes being played.

Solve follows:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The notes are abbbabbaabg. Thus: http://splitearth.org/abbbabbaabg/

A nice story awaits you on arrival at the sub-directory.

Looks like you were off by only one letter... Sad

If it still matters, the notes in the notes .wav seem to be:
a.b.bb.abba.B.b.g.
(where '.' indicates a longer note and the capital means an octave up.)
