OT/Meta/Think Tank... Interesting to me...

At work I decided to go have a look at the L3 wiki page when something interesting happened involving our favorite conspiracy site.

CFRG.US asked to put a cookie on the work computer. I've seen this with the stupid adwares at places like Hotmail, didn't expect to see it with something involving a game site asking to place a cookie from a player generated site.

The question then becomes, can we make this technology work for us? Would it be possible for a script kiddie to send a cookie for people on the NRU site (i.e. hoping to locate more in-game people/sites)?

Yes, I am that stupid when it comes to computer programming. The scary thought is that I am one of two computer use "experts" at work.

The cookie that CFRG.US puts on your computer consists of a webtrends ID number and a language selection.

Cookies arn't the nefarious things that people make them out to be. While they can be used (and in most cases are used) to track your web viewing habits and settings, it's usualy for a good reason. That's why places can store your login names and settings when you close your browser.

Strictly speaking there is no way to set a cookie so that you know where people are going when they visit nru.us. There are a few IE bugs that might allow you to do this, but there is no way to even get the cookies installed on another persons machine without them knowing it. The most comon method of doing this is cross site scripting, but there don't appear to be any pages vulunerable to this on the nru.us domain. Even if we could do that, then you would have to have access to all of the HTTP headers in order to view the cookies whenever a request was made. And if you have that, then you may as well just grab the HTTP GET.

Cookies are usefull for tracking things like session IDs and settings like default language. There are much more efficent ways of tracking someones movement on the internet, like web bugs and recording IP requests.

Sorry if I implied that there was a nefarious purpose, just found it interesting that it showed up on a "non-game" site. That and I feel like annoying the two meat puppets that wanted to scare Reggie/Marcus. Wondering if giving them some cookies of their own would lever their paranoia into a higher gear.
