[S2] #75 PXCPD

Just to save anyone embarassment, the solve page says:

"The Perplex City Police Department is not currently looking for volunteers. Please do not call this number. No, really, don't try it - it doesn't work"

Well that's interesting, because I tried the number yesterday (before I confirmed the solve) and it does work.
What you get is
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
An answering-machine message which says:
"The person you're trying to reach is not available. Please leave a message after the beep."

And no, I haven't left a message yet, or tried sending a text.

I'm guessing that the number is:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
ARG-related.

Can you send texts to (presumably) land-line numbers? If so, it might be worth a go, since we were told not to ring it, but no-one said not to text it!

Then again, we were also told 'it doesn't work' so I'm guessing this is more down to vagaries of the English language than some ARG-y clue from Mind Candy.

I take your point, but in that case why set it up as an answering machine in the first place (assuming the answering machine works)? Why not just a recorded statement, e.g. "Perplex City Police are not recruiting at the moment. Thank you for calling."

Another possibility is that they perhaps mean it doesn't work yet.

I appreciate that one of the dangers of an ARG is that you end up reading too much into the smallest things, however it's been well publicised that the new ARG will feature Violet as a Private Detective, so it isn't too much of a leap to suspect that the PXCPD will play a significant role...

it's evidently a MC controlled number, although they are in the 020 7xxx area of london, new numbers are being allocated to the 8xxx code (which used to be for outer london) or 3xxx as there are very few 7xxx numbers left.

If it had never been intended to be called, presumably they would have used the 555 convention american films/tv use

So, how did you all decide which order to place the 7 remaining digits? Did you just call the numbers until one worked?

Well, I did call the number to confirm it before submitting the answer. Probably just as well, because I made a silly error in my working first time round. However, you shouldn't need to do that if you've completed the puzzle correctly.
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
The remaining numbers should be in a fairly clear order.

PERPLEX CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT

Citizen: do you have what it takes to be a PXCPD Volunteer?

Tackle this puzzle and give us a call.

Remove all these numbers to reveal our phone number

- Anything larger than 3 on the smallest grey circle.
- Anything larger than the product of two consecutive primes whose sum is 5
- All square numbers greater than 1
- The number of trunks on an elephant, from all but the outer circle
- The number 3 on the outside circle and its opposite
- The number of points on a pentagon on all the red circles.

LETTERS

Letter of the Week!

Dear Rinaldo,
Some time ago, a boy I find quite distasteful gave me a puzzle that, when solved, professed undying and eternal affection for me. I wasn't sure what to do at first, so I pretended I was unable to reach the solve: however, given the direction our college coursework is taking, it will soon become obvious that I am perfectly capable of solving the puzzle - unless I intentionally underperform in class.
I want to maintain my high academic standards, but at the same time, I don't want to face this unpleasnant boy and tell him that his advances are unwelcome. I think any comment on the topic would only encourage him in his doomed efforts to win me over.
What can I do to both discourage him and keep my marks where they belong?

Signed,
Tired of Lying

Dear Tired,
It's likely that your would-be-beau wouldn't even notice if your marks outstripped your supposed lack of ability. Something tells me he isn't so very perceptive. I suggest you have a good long talk about the situation with your closest friends. At your age, love is often a fickle thing that heats and cools very rapidly, so you may find the problem has already resolved itself. Just to be safe, you should perhaps spread word of a 'catastrophic key failure' you have suffered, which, among other things, destroyed all evidence of this unwanted puzzle; and then reject all future advances from this boy on the grounds that they remind you of that difficult period of data loss.

Real Number Update

I'm fairly new to the ARG so I wasn't aware of this, but spugmeistress has posted on the PXC Forum that the PXCPD phone number has been used by MC in the past - at one of their live events last year.

Yup, they did, we had to make fake reports during a concert for some reason, can't remember why now, there were some VERY funny things said.

Since you asked Wink

We were investigating the death of Isaac Cymbalisty and had to get into the PXCPD's system to retrieve the information they had gathered. Fleming Heath is/was a volunteer there and when things get tough, they activate the volunteers and we could then use his access. So we sent in loads of prank calls (that poor bear), conveniently coinciding with a riotous RFD gig, and managed to cause a slight mess, reported in the Sentinel. But we did the get the information and it did lead to the murderer.

PXCPD
twinkleboi

okay, I tried the phone number before the solve, but the answer message was for someone called twinkleboi, who said it was a wrong number, but suggested a detour to his gay podcast site. I think this may genuinely be nothing to do with the game.

Yes, I've just retried it, and it's a completely new message.
"Twinkleboi" does say "this is not some police department thing", which is interesting.

Assuming it has nothing to do with PXC (and after having a look at the website, I doubt it!), my guess is that MC have let the phone number go as part of their clearout and it's been reassigned.
The poor bloke who's inherited it is probably now getting bombarded with PXCPD applications and wondering what on earth's going on... Confused

That's very very amusing - I just choked on my quiche. It's Lorraine flavoured.
