really don't want to keep on the topic... but I always thought something like '...of the MacGregor clan' would have been the norm. But '(Name) the (Clan)', like 'Shamus the MacGregor' (which now that I say it seems rather feasible) seemed like a unique convention... to me... at the time... =) moving on...

One last interjection, then: usually they didn't say the name beforehand, it would just be "I saw the MacGregor today." Robert appears to be a special case since he was also a king, who usually went by first name. So perhaps it would be more grammatical to say "Robert, the Bruce".

Nice topic!!

My name is pretty simple DJ (Im a DJ) and my last name is Sampson

My Avatar is the Laughing Man symbol from Ghost in the Shell 2nd GiG. I really liked the idea of the Laughing Man and what he stood for. I saw him as a sort of Puppetmaster in his own way.

I plan on covering my face in all of my Myspace pictures with this logo in a true laughing man style. Might even switch my DJ name over to the Laughing man. Well see Rolling Eyes

Settle back... This is a long (and dull) tale.

It all started when I joined a small Golden Sun community many years ago, in 5th grade. (Incidentally, I still belong to said community, and it is becoming increasingly small.) Before I joined the message boards, I made a few guest posts under the screen-name "Nobody," because I wanted to conceal my identity. Unfortunately, when I went to join several days later, I found that that username was already taken. I looked for variants, and thus, "I Don't Know" was born.

In 7th grade, I joined Runescape. (I was young and foolish.) I had just finished reading the .hack//dusk manga, and one of my favorite characters in it was a magician named "Reki." Thus, my Runescape account became "Reki_Mage."

Now, inbetween now and then, I had signed up for many things. I had discovered that "I Don't Know" and its variants (like "IDK") were taken pretty much everywhere on the internet. I also discovered that "Reki" was taken in several places, as well.

In 8th grade, I joined the Nintendo NSider forums. At a loss for a nickname, I decided to combine my two previous nicknames into one: Reki + IDK = RekIDK. However, the NSider forums made everything into capitol letters, so I was stuck with REKIDK.

In 9th grade, I joined Kingdom of Loathing. Keeping with my current trend, I used Rekidk--no capitalization this time. (I had since discovered that "Rekidk" was unique on the internet.) One time, when I was online listening to Radio KOL, the DJ said my name on the air, pronouncing it as follows:

Wreck--Ee--Dee--Kay

Then, in 10th grade, I joined Unforums. And thus ends the explanation of my name! (Finally!)

---

My avatar is much easier to explain. I really like the Dunkin' Donuts commercial where they make fun of Starbucks. It is, indeed, hilarious. The woman is just a person from the commercial who is clearly very confused about how to order coffee, and 'Perhaps Fritalian' is the punchline of the commercial. It's incredibly ugly and hard-to-see because I couldn't get it to look nice and fit within Unfiction's size limitations. But I am far too lazy to change it now. Smile

(Actually, the reason I am using that avatar was because the avatar I use elsewhere, a Phoenix Wright avatar, does not fit into the size limitations here. But alas, that's another story--and, honestly, nobody is still reading at this point anyways.) Razz

I read your entire post Rekidk and I found it interesting how you came up with your name!

So I guess I'll take my turn now -

My user name -

It all started when I finally got my own computer back last summer I think and my mom says to me "It's about time you got your own email! It'll be fun! We could email each other during the day when I'm at work!"
I agreed to get one and as I was registering over at hotmail, I took probably about a half hour or later to come up with a good username.

Now I should say that my favorite color is red (hell, you should see my bedroom! now it's not overwhelming but it's obvious.) so I tried to come up with a name that involved the word red in it or at least some other version of red. After a while the word crimson came into mind after trying other red words such as well red, burgandy, apple, blood, etc. So I tried crimsonheart as my username, but it was already taken much to my dismay. So then I changed some letters in it and thus: crimsynhart was born!

Now how did it come to Crimsyn here at Uf you may ask? (if you didn't indulge me.....)

Well, after discovering the world of ARGs through Ocular Effect (I saw the movie Fallen and found Ocular Effect on the ABC family website) I decided to look into the matter that is ARGs through Google and found ARGNet through that. After discovering there were more games besides OE and it mentioned Unfiction some and following that link discovered this website, but I didn't join for some time and I just followed/silently lurked in an ARG called E.V.A.

After awhile, I decided to join and finally show myself so I took out hart and capitalized the c (and after seeing "short names" like Redhatty, Lucy, Sylvia, thebruce, etc, I felt that Crimsynhart was too long and tried to stay within the "theme"). Crimsyn finally came to be!

My Avatar -

A much shorter story I promise!

After signing in to Unfiction, I tried to find a cool avatar, preferably a red heart pic that had a dagger through it, maybe bleeding- something to represent "crimsynhart" but I couldn't find the one special picture! (If anyone knows of such a picture feel free to pm me to tell me about it!)
So then I started to look for red dragons just for fun and I found this picture I have now and after sizing it down with the help of Phaedra, here is the final product!

So Rekidk you could use your other avatar, I would ask Phaedra or another moderator how to do it. But that's just me!

Thank you for the suggestion on the avatar--funnily enough, I just got a PM about the very same issue. (There are so many helpful people here at Unforums.) Smile

Also... I think that this avatar has kind of grown on me. I might look into making it less pixelly, but I think Fretalian girl is here to stay for a while. Very Happy

I am finding it very interesting to discover where all of these names came from, too. I'm learning all sorts of new things. Smile

As there's a long story and a short story, I'll try to combine them and patch together a medium-sized story for your entertainment.

Right.

It's 1991 and my best friend has that holiest of holies, a computer capable of running games. (Thus, Secret Agent and Crystal Caves were the first computer games I ever played, and I still have a soft spot in my heart for them.) For a while we were entranced with that, but then her father went one further and got a dial-up modem as well.

Thus two ten-year-olds are let loose on the internet.

We were big Star Trek fans, so naturally that's what we looked for. If you were around back then, you recall what the internet looked like then; after trolling through that wasteland, we found the Mecca of Star Trek fans on the internet, startrek.net and its groundbreaking chatroom. It refreshed itself. Amazing! Very Happy

Anyway, to make a long story shorter, I went by Lt. Piper for a long time. (Lt. Piper was the main character in two Diane Carey novels; I loved her a lot, even though she was a gigantic Mary Sue.) Later I decided I wasn't fond of the reputation I had built up and decided to switch nicks.

Soleta is another character from another series of Star Trek novels, Star Trek: New Frontier. She's half Vulcan, half Romulan, and she kicks all kinds of butt. (The only thing that saves her from Mary Sue-dom is that she's written by Peter David, who already has a Marty Stu in that series. Very Happy) Fast-forward twelve years and here I am.

That's longer than I intended it to be.

a duck by any other name...
still QUACKS.

My avatar is temporary for Year Zero (all songs are going to be released in remixable GB format! WooHoo!) but normally it's a picture of a worm strangling a bird.

My main usenet/bbs/forum nick has always been Wyrmwood - i.e. wormwood from revelations (end of days, chernobyl, etc etc). The Y is just a geeky D&D playing reference to dragons Wink EarlyWyrm came about from the debut release of Genesis P. Orridge (Throbbing Gristle, Skinny Puppy, Psychick TV) which was actually called earlywOrm, but hey - may as well stick with the "Y" motif.

I decided to use this nick when I found uF - thinking I didn't want my ARG playing to be associated with my real screen name (which can be traced to my real name, company, etc). Then I got to know the community and realized obfuscation is absolutely impossible here - oh well Very Happy

Rekidk, your post was very interesting, because I kept pronouncing your name in my head as "Rekkid K." like, "put da needle on da rekkid." Hee.

My name is so mysterious that I fear posting its explanation, even here amongst friends.

My avatar is the embodiment of sleep deprivation. Or so I've been told.

i was a lurker on uf for a really long time before i registered. while i was busy lurking, i began to search for a name for myself. i really wanted to use my real life nickname, but i also wanted to be anonymous because when i first started playing args i kept it a secret from everyone that i knew. ridiculous i know -- but it kinda added to my entire arg experience. Cool (i'm now out of the closet with my arg playing and creating) okay so i was lurking some game and while searching for info for a puzzle, i stumbled upon this orchestration and video called "labfly dreams" which was a piece based on speculations that fruitflies might dream during their short lifespan and what would they dream about.

my avatar is from an experimental film of mine that contains an animated character known as "the ordinary man".

Good stories! Want to hear a boring one?

My name's Christopher Love. Not a tough one right? But like everyone else, I get lots of mail with my name misspelled. So a guy I used to work with started calling me by the misspelled versions. The most common were Chrictopher (Crick- Toe - Fer) and Lovec (Low - veck). The funniest (an actual mispelling) was Christgopher (Christ - Gopher).

The day I joined Who Is Benjamin Stove? I needed a name. The guy at work had apparently selected Lovec as my nickname of the day, so I used that... only I switched out the 'c' with a 'k'. You know, cuz it looked cooler.

The End.

The avatar is all WIBS. An alien (for the crop circles) wearing a cowboy/farmery-type hat (for the farm/crops) holding a coconut (to represent the infamous coconut-dude... surprisingly, it is NOT a bowling ball). Somehow this avatar and I became entwined during WIBS, and so Lovek the Alien sticks around. He has various other incarnations.

Well, my name's story is in fact pretty boring.

Back in the day of Marathon 2 lan games I needed a nick and I thought of Neanderthal, I don't remember why or how. Later, when I started playing Myth 2 online I used it again and then there was no turning back. I've used that name ever since (10 - 9 years) although sometimes I've used the nicks Supertrow (Trow is a Myth character), Hrymur (A norse mythology entity) and Nebbi ( a shorter and easier-to-pronounce version of Neanderthal (for Icelanders at least )).

I've only used two avatars here on UF. The first one was the logo for Thoth in the Marathon games, where it was an "ancient personality construct". Now it is Gary Larson's God character taken from this image.

---
Edit: Oh, and you can read about Neanderthals on wikipedia
