After trying to get caught up over the last week, I think I'm officially hooked. I've been looking to get back into an ARG and this one looks fascinating. Hopefully my real life won't keep me from participating too much.

Websites from the future I can buy with a little suspension of disbelief. Websites intentionally sent from the future by physicists experimenting in quantum entanglement? Now that's a hook!

Thanks to everyone who's been documenting this game thus far!

What he said.

Also: Hello again, everyone. I'm back.

Mailstrom

themailstrom.com number: 24.1.1

(I wonder whether that means we ought to look at this site first? In some way? Probably not, but the thought occurred to me.)

The numbers are confusing. Right now the only thing that makes sense to me is that they are some kind of asset-numbering system. Since Year Zero is going to be Halo 24, that these are sub-items of that overall endeavor. Perhaps in the grand scheme of the "information sent back through time" story, they may be the senders' method of tracking the data.

YMMV.

That's an interesting point. It could simply be a numbering system assigned when our physicist friends sent this material through their system.

[META]This could also simply be a clever way of letting us know what's in-game and out-of-game, although it'd be fairly easy to emulate if someone were trying to game-jack[/META]

I don't think we should give up on it as a puzzle, though. Maybe keep it on the back burner?

I'm in.

Way back in the thread, somebody asked about the voices. The shooter sounds like Trent Reznor. No Hurry sounds like Arthur Hankett, who played the gentleman we all came to love named Thin Kinkle. I don't recognize little miss British.

themailstrom.com a fake?

I could be wrong, but I think, and I'm too busy at the moment to go back and verify this, all other sites with logins had the login in a flash app. This one is basic html form stuff. So um... fake?

It's not fake.
If you check to see how it was found you will find it was on a lithograph given with a preorder at a listening party. Also the latest page on the site was found by buttons handed out at another listening party.
Besides it's a nice touch that not everything is coded exactly the same. After all, all these sites were not supposed to have been created by the same person.

 NIN
Looking forward to the next step, in the right direction

NIN has all ways had a great sound. What is next? There is now a lot built
up behind this record. Trent in my opinion has all the pain/joy in his music
with this kind of pressure can't help but to expect this to be the best album yet.

Hi, all! I've heard a few comments recently about the length of this thread. 22 pages is a lot to work through, whether you're a newbie or a long-time player searching for specific information.

Now, it seems a little harsh to strictly lock down this thread and force everyone to use the other threads (listening parties, specific websites, etc), but I would like to politely request that people start using more specific threads than this general trailhead one. After all, that's why we have a whole forum area to ourselves now.

"There's nothing more to see here. Please move along."

PRESS

The latest issue of The New Yorker (Mar 19, 2007), of all places, has a sidebar article under "Critic's Notebook" (p. 28 ) by Sasha Frere-Jones about the Year Zero ARG.

The New Yorker doesn't like to put their articles up online, and so I'm not going to infringe on anything by copying it in here, but Frere-Jones seems to think it's a cool idea; he uses the phrase "alternate-reality game" and calls it a "decidedly commercial art form."

EDIT: Yes okay I didn't see the [META] Press thread. Someone can move this if they like.

Anyway, I'm editing because I discovered that The New Yorker is indeed online. Link to article here

This is especially ironic considering the post directly above yours, but there is already a press thread. Smile

We can't merge threads. So if you have any PRESS stuff, please use the PRESS thread.

If a new website is found, please start a new thread [WEBSITE].
If a new page on an existing website is found, please post in that page's thread.
If you attend a listening party, there is a thread for that.
If you go to a concert and find a new USB, start a thread with what you found.

Now that we have our own forum and can branch out, the TRAILHEAD has served it's purpose. As requested, I will Locky! this and we can expand into individual relevent discussions. Very Happy
