[S2] [Dice Set] #040 Snapped

Front:

Quote:
The top half of a "face card" in a deck is supposed ti be a rotated copy og its bottom half. This is not true in the cards pictured here. Can you spot the differences between the top and bottom halves of each card? Count how many mistakes you see on each.

Sekani was the youngest ever competitor in the Academy All-Schools Scholarship tournament. I'm pretty sure the record still holds. No-one particularly rated his chances for winning; he was obviously a talented kid, but he ouldn't have the stamina or experience to get to the top. Maybe another year, people said.

The Academy holds the city-wide competition every year, with thousands of students vying for the chance to win one of the scholarships. The pressure is immense; for months parents subject their children to endless private tutorials and practice games of Twin-Wheel and Counterpoint. I was naturally talented though, and so I didn't have any use for such hand-holding. I knew that I would win a place and tick the first box on my goal to becoming a Fellow of the Academy.

My first few games were trivially easy. At the time, I joked with my peers - the other expert players - that we might as well have played them simultaneously, to save time. Only the final stages of the tournament held any interest for me. It was in those games that I came up against Sekani.

I really enjoyed solving this one... took a good 20 minutes though as I kept on thinking I had found them all and then finding yet another detail that was different. You must must must try to find them all, quite a few of them are tricky to spot.

The answers I had accepted were

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Queen: 7
Jack:6

It is great fun trying to find them all though. Use the above as guidance so you know how many your looking for and enjoy!!

Complete spoiler for completely idle people (go on, give it a go on your own first, you know you want to!!)

Queen

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1) Flower held in hand

2) Number of strands of hair on right hand part of fringe

3) Curly bit on staff

4) Direction of shading on the brooch bit of the necklace

5) Number of dots above one of the blue tree like shapes on the white background

6) Shading on the circle blob of the staff on wrong side

7) One of the Q's upside down

Jack

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

1) Dot missing on pointy bit of staff

2) Direction of white wave/hill like things on blue background

3) Number of dots on clasp thing just below the neck

4) Position of white band on the red waistcoat

5) Groove on the chin

6) Direction of yellow feather things

Note:

I wanted to get a solve in nice and early for this great card. If this is too early then feel free to remove this until later on as I may have jumped the gun a bit...

Different differences

I got it right for the wrong reason. I saw one different difference on each card to you. I suspect your set is the correct set:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

Queen: My 7th was the large spade symbol to the left of the Queens head. On my card one is touching the rectangular outline, the other has a slight gap.

Jack: My 6th was his central buckle. It's not split exactly 50:50.

Hmm. I got it wrong for the right reason in that I had both Marky's and Tornan's differences spotted. A shame that this otherwise good card is spoiled by these ambiguities.

Wow, good eyes on you. I only got it through educated guessing.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I had found 6 on the queen and 5 on the jack. Eventually got it by figuring I couldn't be that far off. Came here to see what I missed (the thing around the neck on both...go figure).

 Jack card
Possible mistake

Hi,

I was just doing the snapped card and have possibly found an error (DUM DUM DUM!) Shocked noises!

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
In the Jack card I get 7 differences, but the accepted answer is 6-on the right hand shoulder there is a small white band, but it isn't on the other Jack below!

Just me or does anyone else see it?

I see what I think you're talking about, but I think that's just:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
the end of the blue/white differences on the sash

I've still got a couple to find.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, both cards are by the same guest puzzle architect, Eric Harshbarger.

It may be nothing more than an in-joke, but as one of the major S1 meta puzzles was related to playing cards, I'm remaining suspicious for the time-being...
