*Darkhuman's daily brain fart:*
what if were' looking for the wrong answers.

we are trying to get questions to fit the answers we allready have.

How are we going to find someone with us all standing still. (yeah, i know statisticly if we all stand still he will run into one of us first....)
we know we need to find Satoshi, and he was in K-berg France. and yes there's a asian school there or whatever, but what if he was there, but NOT for that.?
oR if he was, who THERE could tell us that? Damnitiwannagothere.
yeah, we keep hounding every place he could have been, chances are, hes not still gonna be there, billion to one! *Runs away from rocks again*

Spoiler (Rollover to View):

ok so mind cany people went on www.flicr.com and searched it for a random picture.

went on a photo shop of some sort and altered a picture of themselves very professionally.

or this guy is a seceret member of the mind cany staff---no

so if the real answer is the second suggestion, then try...

Smarty, I could be wrong but wouldn't that be cheating? Trout me as you will.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
I think that deliberately using meta game info isn't right. Granted, MC does have a story part in PXC. But for the solutions to puzzle cards themselves, the one card they were in (that red one) they said flat out to look at them. I think that the challenge and puzzle of this card is to find him based on the picture. We've gotten the city - MC confirmed that - so I think in all fairness we should continue on that path.

Besides, I think MC is smart enough to enlist someone from 'outside their camp' persay.

Have stickied the non-solved silvers (other than Riemann) from Season 1 to keep them out the way of Season 2 as they'll get more traffic than the Season 1 cards in other sections - MikeyJ

First of all, hi everyone! I found out about Perplex City yesterday, started looking it up, found Rand0m's story, and was totally fascinated. I've bought some Season 2 cards (four packs! Woo!) and I'm waiting for them. In the meantime, I started thinking about Satoshi. Today I looked on this thread and was interested to see what different appraoches people had. I'd also wondered if Satoshi was the billion and not the one, e.g. the billionth person to visit Disneyland or something like that. However, my first thought was to look at what we have:

A phrase in Japanese, translation = look for me.
A phrase in English = A Billion to One
A name/code name = Satoshi (wise)
A place = Kayserberg
A picture = details of person and location
An exact location for the photo = the exact spot "Satoshi" was standing on and the direction in which he was facing

Questions I've come up with so far:

Is Satoshi any kind of code? EG an acronym, a literary reference, an anagram
Is Satoshi the Billion (instead of the one)?
If you stand exactly where he stood and faced in the same direction, what would you see?
Why Kayserberg? Japanese connections aside, what is special about that town?

Why hasn't anyone found Satoshi? Possibilities: he lives in a very populated area where he doesn't stand out (therefore in Japan) or he lives in a very isolated area where people don't tend to have computers or a lot of media.

At the moment I'm working on a theory that places him in Gabon - it's a loooong shot!

Forgive me if I've duplicated anything that's been done anywhere else - like I say, I only found out about this yesterday.

Nice to meet you all and if anyone wants to help me figure out Perplex City so I can join in with S2, please shout! I need some guidance.

And just to show billion-to-one isn't a long shot, I phoned a friend yesterday and told him about reading Rand0m's story and how interesting it was and he said: "actually, I know him."

Weird, huh?

Adrian mentions this card in the video of his talk he gave to Google. He was surprised that we (catherwood that is) found the location.

It is toward the very end of this video in response to a question about the players.

Ha! He says the background was "nondescript" when in fact the architecture was quite distinctive to the region. They should have chosen an anonymous office building. THOSE are hard to find.

This sounds like where it is must be relatively irrelavant to who we are trying to find.

Shocked Blimey... and he admitted to it?

Here's a very meta, cheaty thing to consider once we finally get sick of working on this card properly:

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
From the Mind Candy web chat:

<Ollie> Bookmore asks: "What did it take to convince Satoshi of being the target for a worldwide manhunt ?"
<Adrian> The babes
<Adrian> He knew he'd get them
<Adrian> Actually, I don't know
<Adrian> I've never met him
<Jey> Satoshi was surprisingly easy to convince. In fact I'd say he jumped at the chance. Wouldn't you want to be famous (on the internet [sort of famous, not really])

So... an old mate of Jey's then, perhaps from university?

Hey we are all proud to know you.

I spoilered this because Rand0m did - but I'm not sure why it is a spoiler?

Anyway, I may have spent way too many hours in the unfiction chatroom with wishi before he went to work for Mind Candy, but I'm pretty sure that would not be a correct guess -at least as to where they might know each other from.

Ok, this is a small stab in the dark based on various things I've seen and heard recently.

First, I'm almost certain this is based on six degrees of separation (I think we all do now).

Second, I think it could be based on social networking (so 6 "degrees" from a point on a social networking site). I know this has been mentioned before as well but mine came from a job interview (well, chatting to the guy before the interview) when he mentioned six degrees with relation to social networking, just struck a chord with me.

Third, the start point... I wonder whether the start point is scarlett's myspace page (http://www.myspace.com/thescarlettcode), maybe it has more of a purpose than we realised...

What I propose is that we need to go six people away from scarlett on myspace to find satoshi... unfortunately there are almost 600 people on JUST scarletts friends and even if everyone down the chain just had a couple of friends there would still be an insane number of people to check.

What do people think about this? The only problem I have with my own theory (strange, I know) is that the scarlett code only started about a month and 1/2 before wave 4, making it a bit soon for creating a card.

Testing Six Degrees

If this is testing the six degrees of separation theory then would finding Satoshi through the internet be, somehow, cheating? To demonstrate the six degrees 1 theory we should find the actual chain from the person giving the answer, to Satoshi.

Of course, you might argue that the answer page couldn't tell how you found him. But a slight twist would help. Suppose Satoshi's instructions are to only reveal the answer to someone he knows? If you notice someone in the street, carrying a copy of The Daily Mirror, who looks just like Satoshi; go up to him and say, "You are Satoshi and I claim my five pounds 2 "; he might admit he is - but not give you the answer because he doesn't know you, so you haven't found a chain yet.

Then again - perhaps this scenario isn't worth worrying about until someone actually finds a recalcitrant Satoshi.

1 Did you know that '60s group, The Three Degrees, have had eleven different people in them?
2 Tarim's just showing his age - replace this with whatever the current parlance is.
