Guten Tag Mein Freund Joshua,

I apologize for not replying earlier. I have been, as you say there, lying the low, for the Miller's reach isn't confined to just the States. Fortunately for us all, however, I have learned from very reliable sources that he is no longer a threat. To anyone.

And so the winds of fate move us all a bit as they pass, no? One life touches another, and one death touches many. One lie leads to generations of deceit and one truth to months of pain.

I ask myself, how have I changed?

I mourn the loss of a true friend, good Jon Paine. Although our time together was short I saw into the man's soul and he was good, gentle, in search of only validation and approval. He had created a fantasy persona for himself he could no longer live up to and his attempt to make that fantasy real cost him his life.

I ask myself, why are so many of us willing to destroy ourselves as we are now, to become something different?

I regret any part I have played in any way that may have resulted in anyone being harmed or even placed in danger. Alas, like many of us it seems, I have played the role of a pawn in this grand chess game. I honestly thought I was helping with what I did.

I appreciate the new friends I have made, the lessons I have learned, and, most of all, the new appreciation for the life that courses through my veins beneath this painted skin. Though we mark our days by events, we mark our lives by the way we live it and appreciate it.

I go to do that now, my dear friend, and I hope you do that too. I will be away for quite a while, as there is much to do and think about. I know a small and quiet place, hard to get to and, what's the phrase, chopped off from the world, where I will do that. May your time be peaceful and filled with love and joy while I am gone.

I am the Painted Soul.

/me was unsatisfied with this Painted Soul character and his part in this whole thing.....

but, then again, I had a hard time seeing the body enhancement angle to the story except that Amie was a friend of Derek & Matt.

Aw well. Always good to have closure.

[UPDATE] MHC News
Derek grows up

Monter Hunter Club - News update

Quote:
A new set of monsters - Sun, March 18, 2007

I called my Mom last night, ostensibly to wish her a happy St. Patrick's Day, but really I just wanted to hear her voice. That same nagging voice that used to make the back of my neck clench tighter than a piano wire now sounded like a Mozart piano concerto, even as she sighed and said, "How much money do you need, Derek?"

I called my Dad as well, who asked me, "What are you on, exactly?" He then explained that he didn't know any NYC cops who could pull strings for him, and that if I needed bail money, I should call my mother.

I told them both I loved them and appreciated all they'd done for me, even if I haven't done a great job of showing it so far. So I expect any second now a drug intervention squad and/or holy water-flinging priest may come busting through my door, but that's okay. Both my parents are alive and well, and I'm not going to take that for granted any more, because they're not always going to be there.

Seeing my three best friends forced to grow up with the speed and impact of a car crash has made me realize how long overdue I am. I'm not a kid any more. I've spent years looking for monsters, all the while hiding my head under the covers, afraid to confront the scariest monster of them all: adulthood.

But no more.

As we've all seen recently, there are real monsters out there, and they can't be hunted down and defeated by children. Even though the world is finally rid of Dr. Genero, the monsters he created will be around for a long time. I'm not talking about the freaky armed fish, I mean those snarling, fanged beasts called loss, pain, fear, regret. Matt, Amie, Sun-Yi, I know I haven't always been there for you as much as I could have, but if you'll let me, I'd like to help you hunt these monsters however I can.

Sun-Yi, I hope you come back to chase monsters with me soon.

Where has Sun-Yi gone?

Didn't she go back to Korea after finding out about the death of her parents?
