IonARG
Initiative on Alternate Reality Gaming

Your help is needed.

Quote:
The Initiative on Alternate Reality Gaming was formed in December 2006 by a combined group of developers, players, and community leaders wanting to promote the genre and concerned with the growing division between the player and development communities. Believing that one of the great things about the genre was the spirit of collaboration, they realized that by bringing the groups together with a few objectives and some specific initiatives both of their concerns could be met. After some initial discussion and debate on a few early initiatives, IonARG went public at ARGfest 2007. The rest, they say, is history.
Goals

* Promoting the genre of Alternate Reality Gaming and its role and possibilities in the larger entertainment, media, and advertising pictures
* Archiving Alternate Reality Game articles and artifacts - it's only been 5 years and much of our history is already lost
* Supporting open discussion between game designers, academics, players, and even the medi

Head on over and voluteer for an initiative!

Nice, I'd really like to help with the argdb project. Added my info... been waiting for this all to start up. The media portion of the initiative will definitely be beneficial in the professional market. Balanced with the archiving aspect, I think this will be a great thing overall to have.

Added my info - digging up my archived info (and kicking myself for some of the stuff deleted last year). Not a website html person, but good at saving stuff!

Only having a tiny bit of skill in any particular area, but wanting to contribute; I have some images saved, and bookmarked pages from old ARGs that I'd like to sumbit for the archives. Will there be a "dumping" ground (so to speak) for pics and links, where others can then draw from and organize? Will that be the purpose of the ARGdb?

Actually, I'm a bit confused about IonARG, ARGhive, and ARGdb. Could someone explain the bigger picture here, and how each differs from, and relates to the other? Thanks.
(If this discussion belongs in a different thread, I apologize.)

The ARGhives site is where we will be storing the gathered material (as soon as the site is available, which should be within the next week). It's my understanding that the ARGhives will catalogue as much of the content of the games as possible by gathering images, puzzles, web domain mirrors, etc. and transfering these digital archives to a permanent home. It will also collect and mirror blogs, guides, trails, and other community-built resources. This will serve to make the preserved games available for numerous reasons following their completion.

Now, what is the difference between that and ARGdb? To my understanding, ARGdb is a collection of all the stats of the various games. Each game page lists not only who designed, developed, and played the game, but also plot information, user reviews, and a directory of game sites and press articles.

IonArg is the place to help make it all happen. From the site:
Quote:
IonARG has one mission – to promote the genre through discussion and action. To help do this, it's split up into a group of smaller initiatives. After all, with something as painfully big-picture as "promote" and "discuss" – you gotta break it up into smaller chunks if you want to get anything done and we do.

We're tired of inaction. We're tired of people sitting around and saying "if only" or "would be nice". Yes, it would be nice! So let's get going!

That just scratches the surface, but I think it clarifies a bit of what you're asking. Checking out the sites will help as well. The archive initiative Wiki is here.

Hope that helps! Smile

Just to jump in here right quick...

ARGdb is more along the lines of, say, IMDB. It provides details on games (when it ran, what it was about, who made it, who played it) and people (who they are, what they played/made) and events (when it was, what it was about, who went). It lets people add their thoughts and memories to games and events, as well. It's a social application as well as, in a way, an historical one because it will record a summary of games and player/puppetmaster memories of them.

ARGhive was started ages ago but lacked the man power (or the man power with time) to really get it up to it's potential. Jamesi started from, I believe, the archives that Steve had gathered on ARGN. I believe the goal of it is to archive and mirror game sites, guides, and trails. Now, when we first started talking about IonARG, we talked about various needs that could become initiatives and archiving our history was a big one. Knowing that ARGhive existed but needed help, it seemed like working with the site was a logical part of the game archive initiative. This way we weren't duplicating efforts but helping to find the support that the site needed.

IonARG isn't some sort of parent organization over those sites - ARGdb and ARGhive have both been around (as seeds) for a long time.

At ARGfest I was waving around a print-out of a spreadsheet i made with a list of every game ever to have a forum thread on these here Unforums. It has over 130 entries currently, with a start date and end date for most games, based on the date of the first trailhead post and endgame discussion. I wasn't gathering the other data (such as behind-the-scenes credits) as I was more interested in creating a continuum of categories -- many of these titles barely qualify as ARGs, but might be useful in comparison.

Maybe this weekend I could be prodded into doing something with it?

Yes, I would also like a copy of this list for ARGdb. It'll save quite a bit of work Smile
