Maybe we should set up a tickler to check this again, in the future.
Say, ten years or so?

Better still, how about you give me $35,000 and I'll give you a BIG MONEY prize of $17,500? It'll be great, I'm telling you. It'll be an ADVENTURE.

A contest within a pixel-map advertisement company. It's like that contest where the company buried a car. Only this seems significantly lamer. Basically you will find the treasure if they start making some money (the treasure map's appearance is dependent on how many blocks other advertisers buy).

The "Big Money" opening was a big turnoff to me as a game-seeker, and so far they haven't promised any game, only fragments of a map. Still, many of us could probably solve the map before the average pixel ad surfer (really, who actually goes to those?)

To the advertiser, probably the poster - a game is about interactivity. You as a game designer should make more structure to progressively guide players and entertain them. Story is a big plus, as is [very relevant here] some separation from reality, some sense that you are playing a game, entering the magic circle. This right here will appeal to very few people, because, as the Perplex City went to show, the money is not our drive.

So, how about some one edits the title of the first post (and thus this thread) to more accurately reflect what this "hunt4gold" really posted about (i.e. I can't see YT from work but from the preceeding comments, sure sounds like he came in here shilling)????

Kona...
I would if I could.
Basically the meat and potatoes are at:
www.virtualtreasuremap.com
The YT video is of the burial of the treasure, at night, in the woods.
It was posted on January 29, 2007, so our post might not be a shill.

ETA: YT Comments
Quote:
This video,I've found on the internet(bearshare), shows how a guy burries a treasure case. It's a promotion video for a website called VIRTUALTREASUREMAP.COM. This website appears to be a pixelsite. The map who indicates where the treasure is located appears every time someone buys a block! Great idea...why didn't I thought about that? ;-( Anyway, you do not need to buy anything to participate so if you're interested and want to collect some big dollar bills, visit this website on regular basics and send this video to all your friends...
Of course anyone who wants to place ads is welcome too Wink
I've created a forum were you can exchange your information,... around the subject

hi,
Thank you for your comments.

Basicaly I came here to promote this website. Not only because I believe in it but mostly because I own It. Rolling Eyes

You may have the impression the website is a bit lame. I can understand your point of view. But the real adventure will start ones the blocks begin to sell.
You have to know the website is online since a phew months and the pagerank at this moment is zero . ( working on that ) .

As I understood from your comments you're not interested in the money... ( who would like to win an enormous amount anyway? )
No, what you want is an adventure, something you can put your mind at.... show the world you're the smartest internet treasure hunter out there... and of course your own satisfaction that you are capable to solve mysteries that nobody elses could.Well, I've put my 149 Iq brain months on it to make the treasure map the way it is today. So, don't you dare think you will be able to solve the enigmas in a phew days. hehe, This is not gonna happen Twisted Evil Even if I would mail you the entire map ( which i'm not planning to do ), you would suffer to crack the code ... hehe... I didn't create a game where every sucker can find the answer...why would I ? The longer the mystery stays unsolved, the longer I earn money Razz

The reason i posted this message in your forum is real simple, I believe you guys are the persons I need to get things rolling. I'm not asking you to buy things but if you could spread the news in your community of online treasure hunters, friends, collegues you would do me and yourself a favor.

In order to sell blocks, the website need more visitors so that it's interesting for advertisers to advertise on it.
This website will need two kinds of vistors 1) advertisers 2) hunters.
That way, it is free to hunters to participate at the hunt and it becomes interesting to advertisers to advertise...

It is true, I give away money which actually doesn't belong to me. But be honest ...which compagny shares 50% of their benefit.? just go to the supermarket and buy a bread...then tell them you are 10 cents short...just to see what happens next. It is the same principe of the lottery. The only difference here is that in this game luck isn't relevant.

About the video (which is a real one...) , I must admit i'm not a genious when it comes to video editing software.
So, I give everyone the permission to edit it in order to improve it.
You're also free to give me ideas in order to improve the website ... I will follow this forum tread but you will never hear a private/personal message from me again.
I didn't create this website to buy me a ferrari. I'm just tired to live in a materialistic world, a world which is ruled by some "smart"guys who actually believe they are making progress. Those people, who really think they making the difference... but eventually will kill every organism on this planet... I just want to buy my freedom, the way i see it, we're all slaves working the guts out off ourselves to please those assh*les, just like 1000 years ago. The only difference with then and now is that now they make you believe you are free, but you aren't...
It's not that i don't want to work, I just don't want to be a part off those who are responsable for (y)our death.
Thats why I want to buy an isolated island and live like humans should live... in ignorence and harmoney...

regards

Woah - ouch - this reply was a major turn-off to me...

First, it's not very good taste to post your own trailhead and then respond... but yeah I can somewhat understand the need/desire to shill. Sometimes though you ought to find another way of getting the site out there to people and make it interesting to them so they tell people about it themselves rather than having it shoved down their throat.

Second, you're bragging a little too much... you have a 149 IQ and you're telling us you've spent so much time ensuring people can't solve it in a "phew" days... now I'm not sure how they spell "few" in various countries, but it caused me to doubt the 149 IQ.

Third, you're telling your potential customer base - the players - that they're not smart enough to figure out your puzzle. Now come on - you can think of more ways to convince them to motivate themselves than to bluntly say: "I didn't create the game where every sucker can find the answer"

Fourth, you do understand what this community seeks is interactivity. A game in which a story is told, characters interact with the community, and pieces of the "puzzle" come together in a meaningful manner so as to thoroughly entertain the audience while rewarding them.

Fifth, are you telling me that you buried a treasure which doesn't actually exist yet? umm... ok

Sixth, so this website is about you making money and not about you entertaining people. Yeah ok I'm not going to play a game with that mindset being bluntly thrown into my face. I mean yeah many games - such as Vanishing point or Perplex City have made the companies some good money, but they were entertaining... the players didn't have to surf through advertisements to find puzzle pieces. The players were pulled into them by either an intuitive story, or like Vanishing point - a few good videos... an established company being advertised for, and several exciting live events.

Lastly, what's the deal with blaming everyone for various hypothetical problems? I mean we're all slaves to ******** who are going to ... did I read it right? Kill every organism? --- and you intend to use the profits from this particular site to buy an island so you can be free to live in ignorance and "harmoney"... umm.. yeah ok that's really going to make a difference in life if you are sold on the idea that people are all slaves and that we're all going to eventually kill all the organisms on the world... why not try to make a difference? You might not succeed - probably won't fully succeed - but it's better than trying to isolate yourself and not affecting anything whatsoever.

Now I'm not saying that you're a bad guy or anything of that sort, what I am saying is that you ought to think through your posts before you make them and understand the audience of those posts to whom you are trying to sell yourself and website/game to.

Best of luck to you in the future though

I think you have us confused with communities who work on "armchair treasure hunts". I know of several forums, mostly in the UK, where that is their main focus. I'll give you some URLs in your inbox.

While there is some overlapping areas of interest, it isn't really our cup of tea.

I don't know about anyone else, but I find it a bit offensive to be asked to set myself up as part of someone's 'street team' for a project designed purely to make them money with no incentive other than that to do so would be to do "yourself a favour".

I've already made a few sarcastic comments about this within this thread but in light of hunt4gold's last post I'd like to explain these a bit, to clarify my objections. Personally, I registered on this site as a result of seeing the first of the videos for the Wyoming Incident. Whilst that may have turned out to be "all for boners" (ignoring recent events), what I loved about that was that it was intriguing, enigmatic, and drew people in through nothing more than creating a desire, nay a need, to know what the meaning of it all was.

Someone - I forget who - compared the Wyoming Incident videos to William Gibson's "Pattern Recognition". I think this is apt here. The difference between the ARGs that I'd want to be involved in and something like this is essentially the difference between 'the Footage' in that novel and buzz marketing, which also gets a mention: following something through pure fascination and intrigue versus pro-actively promoting something for commerical gain. I feel that the latter is a process of devaluation. Monetarizing something that's appeal lies in its removal from commercial processes. For that reason, I will take no part in this.

The video looks like "The Blair Hidden Treasure Project," and I'm about as excited to see this as I was the original Blair Witch project- which was not at all. I have a feeling that this, just like the movie, would be much better done if it only lasted 25 minutes, but dragging it out will make it lose whatever it had in the first place. I wish the owner/promoter luck, but just a hint. If you are going to push your 142 IQ, you might want to use 2-3 of those IQ points to run a spellcheck. ("phew","tread", etc.) On another note, I find your take on the business model a bit offensive. So not only do you want us to advertise your website for you to get you page hits, you want us to redo your marketing materials (a la the video) as well? The smarmy "challenge" thrown out as well, I find that just... bad. And now, I'm not going to waste any more time on this.

I wish you good luck OP- you are going to need it. (Especially considering your forum only has 2 posts, 1 from you! I can see why you are looking for more page hits if that is the case...)

Is it even worth checking comparing IP Addresses on the posts in this thread?
